lunchtime, showers in the forecast as we head in to 3:00. now a check of the time save traffic with loren cook. as i mentioned the train derailment shutdown main street in old ellicott city, closed between old columbia pike and da wellla avenue. won't re-open for several hours. stick with route 40 instead. leave yourself extra time. there are a lot of police presence now. charley crowson and linda so will bring you a live report from the scene. no problems on interstate 70, columbia pike, over to 695, jfx clear in to the city, 11 minutes,towson and downtown. live look at 95, 395, traffic is picking up in the area. no significant delays. here is what the west side looks like, wilkins avenue. everything moving along fine. delays towards 95. that's a look at time saver traffic, over to you meagan.

breaking news, ellicott city, an 80 car train derailment. happened this morning, sending 23 of the cars right off the tracks, two people are dead this morning. we know one is a young woman and hopefully charley crowson can give us more information. he has been at the scene since midnight. >> reporter: thank you. good morning. that 80 car train was heading from west virginia to baltimore. they were carrying coal. 23 cars derailed across the old historic ellicott city bridge. two people confirmed dead. one elizabeth gnash, she was going to be a junior at james madison and tweeting throughout the course of the night. that last tweet came at midnight before the train derailment was called in. a numb of emergency responders have been on the scene from howard county, baltimore, the ntsb on the scene, trying to determine what happened. also as you would imagine, coal is strown all over main street

in ellicott city. because of that, they are out there now with heavy equipment, trying to move the 23 cars. a number of bars were open at the time. the patrons came out to see what was going on. we spoke with ken, the county executive about putting the train derailment in to perspective. >> reporter: it's usually in the middle of telephone woods, isolated area, to be in the heart of ellicott city, piles of coal and cars, train cars on their side, it is just a tough thing to put in to words. >> a big rumble and big boom and on my way out the door, some kid comes in yelling, check this out. i look up the street, down the street. i looked up the bridge. it all became real.

>> this is a real mess across parts of historic downtown ellicott city. coming up, we will hear from linda so, she spoke with family members of one of the victims killed along the bridge. until then, in howard county, charley crowson, abc2 news. time for democracy 2012 coverage, we are getting our first look at the stage for the republican national convention. it starts monday in tampa. it has 13 l.e.d. panels and took 30,000 hours to design and build this. a tampa tv station reports that republicans plan to incorporate elements of facebook, twitter and social media web sites in ways never seen before at a convention. we will stay tuned for that. speaking of conventions, martin o'malley is going to speak at the democratic national convention. he has been a high profile in the party and appearing on

national television shows. this will be his second speaking role at the dnc. last one was in 2004. it kicks off september 4th incomes charlotte, north carolina. . a look at what you can expect to see on the november ballot. there will be 7 questions and include expanding gambling in ow state as well as marriage e quality. that's the state's version of the dream act. questions are being formlated because the wording could have a huge impact on how people answer them. todd akin, is being encouraged to end his senate bid. it's hard to find anyone supporting him after his controversial comments about rape and abortion and why he opposes all abortion even in the case of rape. >> if it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try

. a man who had thinks bike stolen took matters in to his own hands. he had an e has been rate sting operation and the whole thing was caught on camera.

what is going on? gill lam had app expensive bike stole then month k when it turned up on a craigslist ad. they created a fake persona and said they wanted to buy the bike and traveled 160 miles to confront the bike napper. the pen who took it and he admitted nothing and tried to run off. they tried to stop him as you see. the alleged bike thief was arrested by police. how much does adrenaline rub really impact you strength? yes. this is proof. one man said it was enough for him to lift an suv off of his friend, the victim was trying to change a flat tire. it came down on top of him. his neighbor, he had come of to help him out and change the tire and wasted no time.

what happened. 23 cars overturned across the c coal all over the downtown area. two people confirmed dead. i want to bring in linda so, you have been following the story regarding the victims on the train. you have information that comes from the family. >> reporter: right. the family member showed up, the step moe told us that her stepdaughter was elizabeth gnash on the bridge with a friend, elizabeth was a college student, at jmu university, about to enter her junior year, she was getting ready to head off to college next week. she tells us the stepmother tells us her stepdaughter was on the bridge with a friend, elizabeth, two brothers, an older brother and younger brother had been getting tweets, pictures take on on the cell phone, getting messages until the time of the crab. when enthe crash happened, the derailment happened, that

stopped. when the family member arrived we spoke with the brothers and stepmother, the stepmother said it was her stepdaughter on the bridge, with he friend. the tweets were around midnight. that's the time they were alerted to what is going on. the downtown area itself is still much of a mess, there is a parking lot with the overturned cars. they have to move in with heavy equipment. csx coming in, moving the overturned cars then to assess the damage to the cars in the public parking lot. people who live in the area and go to the bars and areas in ellicott city tell us they see people along the tracks walking along the tracks often. that could have been a case of what happened today. we do know from the stepmother who told us it was her stepdaughter, elizabeth, on the bridge with a friend, when this derailment happened. two victims, they bodies are

end of the month, the head of the union is trying to work with the state and trying to get the plant up and running. 1000 workers turned up to hai about the health benefits. the plan has been idle since may when the continue opener rg steel filed for bankruptcy. the company brought the plant at a bankruptcy auction. workers are worried about how the take care of their families. the head of the union working to ensure seemless transitions.

they take so much pride in what they do. are they hopeful? >> the head of the union says in the state can step in to help the horse racing industry by allowing the construction of casinos, it should step in to do something for them. we will wait and see what happens. >> sherrie johnson, thank you for that report. this thursday, we will talk about the one year anniversary of that 5.8 magnitude earthquake that shook us in baltimore and the northeast. it damaged buildings including this place, national cathedral. by midnight thursday, fundraisers hope to get another $100,000 to fix the damage because of that earthquake. it's illegal to pass a stopped school bus. if you try to do it in frederick county, you are going to get busted with technology. today the sheriff's office and public school system are showing off new school bus cameras and can photograph drives who try to pass those

stopped buses something to keep in mind. heading out the door, rapper chris brown will be in court this morning, brown scheduled to meet with a judge to determine whether he has finished the domestic violence classes and community service he was sentenced to following a fight with former girlfriend rihanna. immigration hearing in a phoenix courtroom. judge will hear arguments on the safe immigration law requiring police to check the status of people they stop. civil rights groups say the law is unconstitutional. wild fire in northern california, look at the video. this has grown to 25 square miles threatening 3500 homes in three towns, north of sacramento, 2000 firefighters are battling the blaze in rugged densely forest terrain. obviously tough situation there. former governor sarah palin getting involved in maryland
