we are live in ellicott city. this has been going on since 12:02. we had a train derailment, a train heading from grafton, west virginia, east to baltimo, trying to deliver coal. instead it delivered heartache to two families from ellicott city. i want to bring roosevelt leftwich. the two girls were on the tracks enjoyi a summer night. >> it's an 80-car train. according to the investigators,

the leading investigator, jim southwood with the ntsb said the train was coming through, 80 cars. as it was coming through about 12:02, something triggered the break. they think it was one of the cars starting to derail. as that happened. 21 cars almost in the center of the train flipped over. as they flipped over, they dumped their load, spilling tons and tons of coal. two girls, 19-year-old elizabeth nass and rose mayr were on the bridge facing the patapsco river side looking back that way. when the train derailed, tons of coal fell on to the two girls, on to a parking lot, at least seven or eight cars crushed. those girls were smothered in coal. it's a long, long process. those 21 cars are full of coal. what they have to do at this

point, they take the flipped over cars, empty the coal out. these two bulldozers are taking the coal, piling it up so they can get that out of the way. in bit by bit they're taking the train cars. they're rolling them out of that area and there's one coming down the tracks now. they're moving very slow. talking about tons and tons of waste that they have to move out of here. these big lifters have been doing this all day. i saw them lift about seven or eight cars. again, 21 cars flipped over. this will be a slow process. main street in ellicott city is closed in both directions from the baltimore county end right over the patapsco. so one of the things they ask is to stay out of the area. if you want to come down park up high and go to tinesses.

the businesses are still open. they are encouraging -- discouraging people from walking around. >> reporter: here they were on a summer night on the train tracks. one was going to the university of delaware and one jmu. now their families are dealing with such tragedy. we'll watch the cleanup. main street, the businesses are open. ken ulman, the howard county executive is encouraging you to come to main street. park up high and walk down low. we're live here tonight, jamie costello and roosevelt leftwich, abc2 news. the weather has remained clear for the cleanup efforts in ellicott city, weather remaining clear and quiet. that's a good thing. a few showers have shown up on the map to the west and south.

all eyes on the tropics as we have another named system, one that could become a hurricane and threaten the southeastern united states. here tonight into the day tomorrow temperatures cooling off to the 60s overnight, back into the 80s tomorrow. looks like skies will clear up. in other news tonight, baltimore county police arrested a man for murdering his roommate in dundalk it. happened on scars dale early monday. victor dejesus portillo was stabbed in the basement. his roommate edwin alexander inglesias-reyes was charged. edwin alexander inglesias-reyes left a trail of blood and is facing first degree murder charges. police tracked down the car that led police on a chase.

it was a silver acura. during the chase the officers lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a ditch. one of the officers was e -- ejecting. adrian morris was killed. the other officer is in the hospital. no charges have been filed. tonight family and friends are remembering the life of patrick dietz. the edgewater man died in afghanistan. we talked to his dad about his commitment to his family and country. >> it's not every young man that says i think i'd like to be a seal and is able to do all the things that are required to meet that and do it to the level of expertise that patrick was able to pull off. >> he will be buried in

we're live in ellicott city. i'm jamie costello. this is something you never see. we had a train derailment, the loss of two lives, two 19-year-old girls. they went to mt. hebron. one went south, the other north, one to the university of delaware and the other jmu. they were sitting on the bridge about midnight when the train came barreling down. they were smothered with coal and pronounced dead right here

on the scene. we had a number of the cars from the trains just spill over on to cars that were parked here for the night on main street in ellicott city. they were all demolished. now we're seeing one car at a time being removed. the coal will be swept up and moved where it came from, from grafton, west virginia, to baltimore. this train was going east. the track is right over here. right below us is the b&o museum. ellicott city is a railroad town. look what happened. >> they can never remember anything like this. this happened a few miles west of here, a few miles east. a lot of people said they were taken by surprise. 21 cars and an 80-car train flipping over. they're dumping the cars out. they will put it in a pile and

get it out. they want to get the track back open and get things back to normal. a lot of folks had a lot of problems trying to deal with this. we spoke with some folks that live in the neighborhood. they've never heard of anything like this. they thought it was an earthquake. here's what they said. >> i was getting a glass of water. the train goes by a couple times a day. this time it was so loud. it was screeching and the table that i was near was kind of shaking. it was unreal. i figured that it derailed. >> it sounded like gunshots going off and the house was shaking. i didn't know what it was. i can look down at a point of view where i could see everything falling over. that's when i knew this was mass mayhem. >> reporter: remember i was telling you right here they're

moving this stuff out of here. they're hauling it down and taking them down the tracks so they can get this track open and get it cleared. according to howard county police, the two girls who were killd were elizabeth nass and rose mayr, both 19 years old and both from ellicott city. there's still the investigation according to the ntsb investigators. it's still ongoing and still in the first day. these only take seconds to happen but it takes weeks to figure out exactly how this happened as they try to put this together. we'll continue to follow this story throughout the evening. it's one of those things. no one says they can remember. one guy said it was an earthquake. the cars fell over one after another after another. >> main street is open but park a couple miles away and walk down. they have made it through

ellicott city. you can see the weather is holding up fairly well. partly cloudy skies the story. then sunshine is breaking through. that's the story at st. john's regional. kids out on the field. why not. the weather was holding up. show you the condition in baltimore, 80 degrees. humidity is 51%. moderately muggy, the best way to term it. those are our warm spots. even in those spots we're barely out of the 70s. humid conditions, though, at least moderately so from the state line south. winds light from the east although that's not much of a refreshing breeze.

the region showing minimal weather, some showers in the ohio valley. expect those to fizzle out and looking at a dry wednesday. thursday looks even more clear as high pressure edges in out of the west. again, those few showers to the west expecting those to fizzle out through the overnight. high pressure west of us and a coastal system to our south. we're between the two systems. that should mean relatively dry quiet weather. the dryest air locked over the great lakes. this looks like a pretty good trend. how about the tropics. tropical storm isaac, a large and powerful storm, increasing in intensity. we do expect this to become a hurricane has isaac makes its push toward the caribbean islands, toward puerto rico and beyond into the dominican republic. taking a northern turn and once
