tracking westward, the storm is expected to pick up steam and when it hits the gulf coast it could be a category two hurricane. >> i urge mississippians to monitor their local media, and heed all warnings and evacuees orders issued by local and state officials. >> reporter: the city of new orleans is on edge. >> with katrina we were like it's not coming towards us. at the end, the worst. >> reporter: drivers have lined up for gas, residents are buying plywood. the city declared a state of emergency and officials are warning be ready for anything. >> we are encouraging all people to monitor local weather conditions in the area to file with officials. >> reporter: millions have been pummeled by wind and rain as isaac is ripping up waves. >> we are going to ride it out until afterwards and see how everything is going to go. >> reporter: schools are closed

for a million students today. tampa spared the worst of the storm, strong winds and over a half foot of rain are in the forecast. as a result, republican officials scaled back the convention from four days to three. >> i got my raincoat on and i'm ready for weather. >> reporter: republican convention will convene for five minutes today, really a formality before adjourning until tomorrow. tj winnick, abc news, tampa. >> in haiti the storm damaged parts of the tent city and left two people dead. the storm knocked out power for most of the country. high winds, rains, forced some people to take refuge in a nearby school. haiti is still trying to bounce back from a devastating earthquake in 2010. weekend rains mean serious clean up for business owners in cockeysville.

weather app. text wmar to 4698, download the app and stay on top of the alerts. four people including a firefighter are recovering after a four alarm fire in the irvington neighborhood. it started at a carryout restaurant. firefighters found heavy smoke on the first and second floor of the building. the flames quickly spread to a nearby church and adjacent building. they had to perform a rescue operation. >> we received multiple reports of people trapped inside the structure. some firefighters pursued and effected a rescue of three people from the building. >> three people had to be rushed to the hospital. a firefighter ha t treatment for burns to his face. the cause of the fire remains under investigation. welcome back to the morning routine. it is the first day of school for students in the area. linda so this morning is live

in northeast baltimore. i understand when students come back to school they will be walking in to what feels like a new building. >> reporter: brand new and state of the art. the first day of school, the custodial staff arrived to get ready. we are on the site of building that faces the cafeteria. this building has wi-fi, voice over internet phones and the basics it didn't have like air- conditioning and windows for light. it hasn't been renovated since 1951. this entire $28 million project is actually happening in two parts, the first part was the completion of the new building, second renovating the old building. the entire school will house 1200 students making it one of the largest elementary middle schools in the city. coming up at 6:00, the principle will be joining us and later this morning at 8:30,

the governor, mayor recallings blake and leaders will be at the school for a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the official new building here. live in northeast baltimore, linda so, abc2 news. it is also back to school for students in baltimore county, the district has a new superintendent vowing to make the system one of the best in the nation. sherrie johnson is live at carver center. you have the first day jitters, but time to get back to work. >> reporter: exactly, right. educators are excited to get back in to the building. we are live in from of carver center for arts and technology, brand new premier building here. baltimore county's 174 school centers and programs opened to 107,000 students. baltimore county public schools has a new superintendent, he will help open schools in the first year as superintendent by visiting 8 elementary middle and high schools across the

county. joined by members by the board of education and the executive, and other special guests. the school system opens with more than 600 new teachers in place and the debut of the new george washington carver center for arts and technology in towson. this school is considered one of the finest arts and technology magnet schools in the country. it's known for its unique curriculum and academic programs and advanced placement opportunities. the old carver will house stoneleigh elementary students. we have two new schools opening. we are told that school starts at 7:30 this morning, pretty soon in more than 2 hours, we will see students making their way in to the building here. sherrie johnson, abc2 news. latest on a police involved shooting happened in south baltimore. it happened over the weekend on maizeel near west point elementary school. police released the name of the

suspect. charges are pending against mitcher. the suspect shot in the leg by the police. a argument in southwest baltimore leads to a stabbing death. police were called to a cutting. officers found 33 year old carington inside a home, pronounced dead at shock trauma. police have a person of interest they are talking to. customers got caught up in a robbery at kfc, forced to the ground during the armed robbery. when police arrived at the store , the manager said they were robbed at gunpoint by two men who took off with cash. witnesses were able to get a vague description of the guy. lasting memory forever. 32 yards, to force overtime in the afc title game. the man who booted the field goal attempt no longer with the ravens. all pro kicker has been
