story of -- tell the story of not know being. maybe more so for the parents of the children in that fourth period lunch, the ones who ran for their lives from the cafeteria to call their parents. >> he called mow and said mom, mom, mom. he said will's a shooting. i said, what? that doesn't happen at perry hall. >> reporter: but on august 27things at 10:45 on this first day of school, it did happen and her son can't unsee that. >> he came in with a shotgun and shot one at a table and one at the ceiling and one of the counselors grabbed him. they all ran. perry hall went into code red, a

lockdown. a 17 was shot in the back. a 15-year-old did it. it's now a very real image hitting right here at home and changing perspectives. >> i'm really concerned now. usually it's not a big deal, did to school, come home, no big deal, you're safe there. now it's wow, did that really happen? >> it did happen and it happened at perry hall high school, a topic that will be the topic of dinner tables this evening. prien cube -- brian kuebler. >> talk to that mother. take your cell phone just in case something happens. >> reporter: we spoke to a different mother who said here, take this cell phone, be safe, have a good year and that cell

phone came in handy. >> listen, we're still trying to sort out all the events. we do know the victim is 17, a senior. he was shot in the cafeteria, taken to shock trauma. doctors do expect him to make it. >> only on the job a month and a new superintendent, dr. dallas dance appeared before reporters talking about a shooting. cheryl conner with more on how dr. dance thinks the school district handled today's violence. >> reporter: dr. dallas dance never expected conversations with the police chief every 30 minutes on the first day of school and as you said, his first as superintendent but this has been his monday. a news conference wrapped up about an hour and a half ago. help spent time thanking the perry hall principal george roberts and commended the one

staff member for bringing down the gunman. he said there were code red policies that were revamped before he took his position. he said school will be held tomorrow at perry hall with additional staff. there has been word about parents learning about the shooting from social media. >> once we realized what the situation was and had the opportunity to work with our police department and assess the information, we did release it to the community and when kids would be released. there will be a letter going home with kids tomorrow. in the age of social media we had students who were making contact with parents as well. >> reporter: one big piece of information missing is more on the shooter and the victim. all dr. dance would say is those are perry hall students. the victim was medivacked. he is in critical condition but

is spected -- expected to survive. again, school at perry hall will be open tomorrow with additional security and staff. and students will be walking in needing some counseling. >> we all know that a school staff member played a major role in making this as not as bad of a situation. did he say something about that person. >> reporter: he really praised the folks at perry hall. he said the principal did an amazing job following policy as well as this one guidance counselor who was credited with bringing down the shooter, just praised him saying this could have been a more horrific situation. >> the question we all want to know is who would do something like this? police say it's a 15-year-old

and they've been tight-lipped. we've spent joce sterman to find out more about the teenager who is in custody. >> reporter: this is a tough one. although police aren't releasing the name of the suspect, plenty of witness, students and neighbors have been giving us his name. they told us about the background of the boy. we want to show you some coverage. it shows baltimore county police block the street and lined up outside a house in kingville where the 15-year-old lives. he was a dpd kid, had a good family although his parents were divorced. we're told he's one of three children. they said bullying was to blame for what happened, although they never expected he would do something like this. >> throughout middle school, he was a good kid.
