34 inches in length. gladdened pulled the shotgun from his clothing. it was at this moment our brave school our counselor, saw this activity as he was pulling it out of his clothing and immediately began to rush him. >> reporter: police say gladden was able to fire a single shot before being taken down, striking 17-year-old daniel borowy at low point range. >> our thoughts and prayers are with danny borowy. danny is under the fine care of doctors and nurses at one of the superior shock trauma centers in the world. >> reporter: police say gladden took the shotgun from his father's home here in hawthorne. at this point no charges have been filed regarding his access to that weapon. in baltimore county,ever hager, abc2 news. >> gladden is undergoing mental evaluation at a local hospital and is being charged as an adult

with first-degree murder and assault. his stepfather is andrew piper. piper's home in the 4800 lock of bradshaw was searched and police said both illegal weapons and drugs were found. piper was arrested. the gun used did not come from piper's home. the family of the teen who was shot, daniel. they chose not to speak but they did release a statement. for that we go to kelly swoope. >> we received it through the media relations team. it reads, on monday, august 27, 2012, our son, daniel was critically injured on his first day at school. we would like to personally thank school personnel who quickly responded, getting daniel to safety. we would also like to thank

baltimore county ems, baltimore county police and the maryland state police who quickly transported daniel to the r adams cowl shock trauma center in baltimore where he remains in critical condition. we would like to ask the public, our family and friends to respect our privacy at this time and keep daniel in your thoughts and prayers we here at abc2 will continue do that, update daniel as condition as we get more information from the family or the hospital. in addition to hearing from the victim's family, the county executive and the police we heard from perry hall's principal. he said they're trying to get back to a normal start but they are aware that some students and parents may have a hard time dealing with what happened on the first day of school. >> we'll have -- we have 10 to

12 professional crisis interventionists. we also caught up with some students after dismissal. many were wearing homemade shirts supporting daniel and some bearing the name of the counselor to stepped. she says there was an opportunity to talk, for students who were having a tough time today. >> we had a lot of different counselors today. if you were feeling drove, you -- grief, you were allowed to talk to them. >> some former perry hall high school students are showing their support for the current students by planning a rally, friday at 8:30. we'll continue to follow the perry high community as they

off the gulf of mexico. -- gulf coast. this is the big easy, bring the rain. we can see spots death rain totals in excess of 20 inches. that will create flooding. back here the opposite, blue skies. current conditions now at bwi. 86 degrees with a northwest wind prinking in re-- bringing in refreshing and drier air. temperatures warm under the sun. the humidity has been noticeably less and will continue to drop tonight and into the day tomorrow, very pleasant but not that much cooler, still low 80s but much drier, much less humid. certainly, the steam actor will be reduced as the dry line and humidity line continues to go further south. the main storm on the map that we all continue to watch very

closely here, of course, hurricane isaac. the exact track fairly well known. it will be in the new orleans area. the city has done tremendous repairs and tremendous strengthening of the levee s even with the rainfall totals over a foot, we think conditions will remain, i guess, survivorrable is the best word from a category one hurricane. tonight 63. nice dry conditions tomorrow. we'll say 84, mostly sunny. comfortable weather will be the story, pleats conditions. this will hold into the travel day friday for your big labor day weekend plans. weather really looking good. that weather will hold up as we go into saturday at least. by sunday into monday we could see some remnants, some spinoff showers from isaac. we think the bulk will head into the upper midwest.

spooked right now? how would you describe the atmosphere among the people? >> reporter: it's interesting. it's a contrast. people responding. they're heeding the mandatory evacuations. they've gotten their supplies. we've heard from a lot of people who said it's in way -- no way it will be near katrina. when katrina hit, the french quarter where we're standing fared the best. a lot of people have come into the french quarter to evacuate their homes and these hotels are completely booked up. >> in the historic french quarter, thank you for that live report. stay safe. a big change. they used to have hurricane parties every time.
