about a special memorial happening where you are standing today. what's this all about. >> reporter: we are here at the 9/11 memorial at baltimore's world trade center. when the sun comes up the building will cast a shadow to move across the memorial and hit inscriptions that indicate what happened on september 11th, 11 years ago today. the memorial honors the 69 marylanders who died on september 11th. this is one of the steel columns from the world trade center when it collapsed. there's an exhibit inside that list the names and pictures of all the marylanders who died. starting at 6:44 this morning, when the sun comes up, a shadow will move across the memorial and highlight the specific times when the planes crashed into the world trade center at the pentagon and in shanksville. happens -- this happens once a year on 9/11 to honor those who died from maryland 11 years ago today. live in downtown baltimore,

linda so, abc2 news. and it took 11 years after the the world trade center fell to recognize workers were he can posed to toxins. first responders and police and fire and emts and volunteers rushed to ground zero after the attacks to try to help find victims. some stayed for months and over the next several years, many of them argue the toxins they inhaled at the world trade center the rubble gave them cancer. based on new evidence, the federal government announced that about 50 new cancers were covered by nearly 3 billion dollars in settlement fund set up for victim compensation. >> the first responders who were there for us, we are now going to be there for them. we are going to compensate them and help provide treatment. >> first responders compensation -- compensation fund went into effect last year but no additional funds will go into it with the cancer announcement unless congress puts in more money.

news around the nation right now. classrooms will be empty again today in chicago as teachers fight for better pay and benefits. the union have 26,000 striking teachers say no progress was made on most of the contentious contracts. they said the school board didn't budge on proposals involving performance evaluations and recall ghts for laid off teachers. apparent say that the -- parents say the number one concern is education for the children. >> our kids need the education. it's bad enough they don't get the education they need under the conditions. we suffer through poverty and through gang violence and everythingand our kids have to be out of school? that's the only safe haven they have right now. >> the walkout is chicago's first teacher strike in 25 years. chicago is the country's third largest school district. 5:35 right now. it was the bear hug that was seen around the country. you probably saw it yourself. president obama got a lift

11:00 this morning. they will pay their final respects. last night, before the ravens first kick off and before the national anthem, everyone took a moment to pay tribute to modell. the stadium fell silent in observance and we saw the loss on ray lewis' face and his eyes tell the story. he saw modell as a father figure. now in honor of modell, the players are wearing a decal on their helmets and untheir jerseys. modell is best remembered for contribution to the national football league. he was the owner of the cleveland browns from 1961 to 1995 and the baltimore ravens from 1996 to 2003. now he helped launch monday night football and was also known for his charitable work. now ray lewis and roger goodell the commissioner of the n-fl will speak. modell is sur voobd by his sons and six grandchildren. that begins at 11 this morning followed by a private luncheon afterwards. the modell family is asking people send a contribution to

the seed school in lieu of flowers. sherley johnson, abc -- sherrie johnson, abc2 news. five things to know as you head out the doorch president obama and first lady michelle obama will observe a moment of silence on the south lawn of the white house to mark the first plane collision. also today a ceremony will be held in shanksville pennsylvania to ruer the -- remember the victims that died on flight 9 3. vice president joe biden will speak to honor those the bravery of those -- bravery of the passengers on the plane. a moment of silence will be observed three minutes after 10. and at 9:30 this morning, a ceremony brings a wreath laying ceremony to remember victims killed on a plane that hit the pentagon. 125 people died at the pentagon when that attack happened. today half a dozen wounded war veterans will join members of the canton kayak club in remembering september 11th and all those who served the country since. it's called united we paddal

and participants will paddle from fells point to the inner harbor. bob woodward appearing on good morning america talking about his new book "called the price of politics." it's released today. the book deals with president obama and his handling of the economy. well, if you over the inner harbor you might want to head oaf to the -- head over to the hard rock cafe. the event runs from 6 until 11 tonight and features live muse particular and standup comedians and there's an event for fun activities for kids. all proceeds benefit the fisher house which is an organization supporting mi tally families in need -- military families in need. the orioles had yesterday off and following a loss with the yankees now hopefully they are back in shape and ready to go. they will be back on the field tonight. that game a two-game series and that's happening with tampa bay. and to celebrate, the 20 year

thanks for joining us this morning. a sleep-- asleep on the job. video captured a burglary suspect taking a that. tried to break into the tar heel barbeque restaurant e picked up a shovel and tried and tried and the door wouldn't budge. so next he tried a butcher knife that didn't work. he tries two shovels this one went on for 30 minutes but all that effort comes with a price. >> you can look at him and tell he was pretty tired. >> it's unbelievable and to lay down and sleep.
