cafeteria and today's incident was inside stemmers run middle school. no one was hurt but a suspect is in custody. roosevelt leftwich joins us. just too close, different circumstances but yet another scary situation. >> reporter: it's going to cause a lot of changes as they beef up police presence in and around the schools. they say this latest incident highlights the fact that they need adults to be more careful with the guns in their house. it was an awful hour of not knowing. >> you just heard about this like, what was it, a couple weeks ago at perry hall. >> reporter: okay, at this point what authorities are asking parents to do is to make sure their guns are locked up. they said they're not giving too much information out about this particular case. what they're asking people to do is to make sure they buy very

simple inexspean shiv things like trig -- inexpensive things like trigger locks. the student is identified as a 13-year-old 8th grader. they said what he did, achording to police, they said he -- according to police, they said he brought a gun. when class was over at 9:50, he pulled that gun out of list pocketed, pointed it at his class, the teacher and himself. as students started to flee, they said the teacher courageously put herself in front of the student, grappled with the student, knocked him to the floor and was able to pin him, hold him until a school resource officer arrived. the school will beef up resource officers. they said they're going to add more officers to different schools, beefing up their presence both in and outside of

the school in order to make people feel safe and to discourage anymore ins accidents here. they will also put some of the officers with those metal detecttor wands, so if an officer suspects something, they can stop a student, search the student with the wand to make sure no other gun or contraband or dangerous substance has been brought in. we'll have an awful lot more on the story coming up at 11, reporting live from headquarters, roosevelt leftwich. >> again, there's a school security meeting and we'll have the latest at 11:00. the incident at stemmers run comes 16 days have the a student was shot mat perry hall. daniel has been in the hospital ever since. tonight he is back homeworking very hard to get his strength back. >> i mean, the road is definitely not done. he's got a ways to g the home

nursing, the home rehab is important to him. >> daniel's parents said he will not be back in school just yet. the priority is for him to get better. >> two ins accidents with guns -- incidents with guns. experts say it is important for parents to have a dialogue with the kids. encourage them and reassure them that they are safe. timely, monitor the amount of television coverage they see and hear about what happened. of course in a perfect world themes kinds of things wouldn't be happening, but as parents it's our job to protect our children as best you can. your students should know to report it if something happens.

missing. a baltimore county police spokesperson said they are interested in talking to the grandson if they scan find him, but they won't say why. >> obviously, because he lives there, we are interested in talking to him, but it's preliminary at this point to say whether he was a person of interest. >> police did confirm that the couple was not shot to death and crime scene investigators were able to recover a weapon. the double homicide is still under investigation tonight. if you live in anne arundel, the department of agriculture wants you to know they will be spraying for mosquitoes. it will be concentrated near ritchie highway, route 100 and start at 7:30 tonight. people should avoid doing

student at stemmers run middle school pulled a gun before a teacher was able to get the gun away from him. officials said that teacher held the student down until a school resource officer got there. at a news conference this afternoon county officials said we're going to notice a lot of police around our schools and also, they will be using hand held metal detectors as well. it's been 11 years since the september 11th attacks that took the lives of almost 3,000 people. the day began at ground zero. this year was the first that only families of those who were killd were allowed to spoke. in washington, president obama and michelle obama laid a wreath at the memorial of the pentagon victims. vice-president joe biden

gathered with a crowd in shanksville, pennsylvania. >> here we are in anne arundel where there as a tribute to the fallen in millersville. that memorial features steel beams salvaged from the rubble have you the twin towers. >> we're here today in front of this memorial which we put here two years ago to honor, not only those who lost their lives, 68 maryland residents, but to thank the first responders, the police, the fire, emergency medical personnel hop went into those burning buildings. >> the beams were donated by the port authority of new york and new jersey. if you'd lick to visit, it's located in front of the fire and police headquarters in

millersville. in baltimore the world trade center shadow moved crass. it's inscribed with a timeline. the white marble base and twisted steel taken from the north tower of the world trade center looked like a sun dial following the destruction of the attacks that day. the anniversary of 9/11, not just a day for remembrance but has become a day of service and giving back. that's what happened on the east side of baltimore as scores vowed to get down to work. tim rutherford has the story. >> reporter: the oliver community has not been spared the troubles of urban blight but today on september 11th there is renewed vigor and optimism because when good people attack a problem, good things happen. >> it's taken a lot of hard work and hundreds of volunteers and this is the cap stone. >> reporter: only 150 volunteers

from local companies, all here to tackle the tough job of july starting a community in renewal. >> they're all doing exactly, living the spirit that followed that tragic day, which is building communities, supporting communities and working together. >> reporter: the group, operation oliver, has been working daily in this neighborhood for over a year. it's a coalition of military veterans who want to continue to serve. >> service doesn't end when you take the uniform off. in fact, this becomes more important. >> reporter: the volunteers are hopeful they're making a difference. >> it's a great way to give back to the community and remember and we ought to keep moving. >> people in the community, that this can be a spring board for them that they will see what's
