"good morning maryland," i'm megan pringle. >> and i'm charlie crowson. we begin this thursday with breaking news out of east baltimore. an overnight house fire leaves five people dead including three children. >> it happened at a home near you this goode marshall high school. as well as abc2news.com but right now to the team coverage for you. abc2 news' sherrie johnson on the scene, what can you tell us? >> reporter: well, we are here yes in northeast baltimore and as you can see behind me here, firefighters are still on the scene of this early morning fire. we have learned that five

people have died in the fire. two firefighters were also injured. we have four children that died and one adult. the call came out about 2:00 this morning. crews responded here to 5601 denwood avenue and found the row home engulfed in intense flames. right now, i have chief kevin cartwright with the baltimore city fire department joining me live here. you know, chief, just -- a very sad scene this morning. four children, tell me a little bit about what happened this morning. >> yeah, this is something we never look forward to. but just after 2:00 this morning, our firefighters arrived on location to a very dramatic scene involving an intense fire with heavy fire load and smoke conditions coming from a two story brick home. we also noted that there was one adult man actually jumping from the second floor window in an effort to escape these intense flames and heat. our firefighters went inside with attack lines, those expert witness to suppress the fire

where it was reported that people were on the second floor. it was during that time that one of the firefighters actually fell through the first second floor, into the basement level into another firefighter. mayday was sounded. they both were rescued. in addition to ets to try and rescue victims inside but unfortunately they did potentialish. believed to be an adult woman and four children relatives. >> reporter: all right, now we were also told too that you know, basically one gentleman jumped -- it was a chaotic scene when firefighters arrived on the scene. we had people jumping out of the windows so there were ten people in the moment. five were able to make it out? >> that's my understanding that five or more people were able to safely make it out of the intense blaze as we found when we arrived here on location. >> reporter: smoke alarms in the home? >> preliminarily we did locate three smoke alarms in the home. whether or not they were actually working is still to be

determined. >> reporter: the two firefighters that were injured. >> they are fortunately -- they're in stable condition. they were treated here at the scene. fire paramedic and transported to bay view medical center where they were treated there and they remain at this time in stable condition. >> reporter: now also there was another fire just a busy morning. you had a second fire earlier this morning. >> yes, unfortunately just after 1:00 a.m. this morning, in southeast baltimore, we had a basement fire on the 1400 block of bonzo street where two of our members suffered serious injuries. one officer suffered second and third degree burns to his face in a home. they were treated at the scene and transported to bay view burn center where that officer who suffered serious burns remains in serious condition. and the firefighter is being treated as well. >> reporter: i tell you kevin, just a very busy morning here.

also back here at this fire, one of the family members had to be detained by police officers because he was just so distraught about losing his mother. we've seen a row of family members just crying, just a very emotional scene this morning. >> yes, the type of scene you never ever look forward to confronting at any time in your fire service career. unfortunately we do encounter these situations but we're here and we're going to continue urging the public to please make sure you have a working smoke alarm. there's no need for anyone to perish in a fire. one death is one too many. so we want everyone all of our family members in this city to be safe. >> reporter: all right, thank you so much for joining us this morning kevin we appreciate you talking to us. once again here in northeast baltimore where five people have been confirmed dead. four children and one adult and of course we'll continue to bring you more information throughout the morning. reporting live in northeast baltimore, sherrie johnson,

closures in northeast baltimore. denwood avenue is shut down. you will want to use the road instead. now if you are traveling through the tunnels fortunately there's nothing to get in the way. the fort mchenry tunnel as well as the harbor tunnel will both be nice and clear. if you are headed out to the beltway here's a live look at the west side. at liberty road. no delays whatsoever. you're looking at a typical 11 minute ride right now on the outer loop from 795 down towards 95. and this is what the beltway looks like in parkville at harford road. no problems getting up to towson this morning. that's a look at your abc2 timesaver traffic. megan and charlie, over to you. overnight a fire out of the beltway. on hand putting out a huge car fire. the vehicle was in? flames near the liberty road exit shortly after 1:00 this morning. no word yet on the cause of the car fire. again out on the beltway and we don't know right now whether or not anyone was hurt. imagine finding five armed

men breaking into your home. that's what happened to a family earlier this week. the victims know at least one of the intruders leading police to believe the family was targeted. a 17-year-old has been arrested. however the other four are still on the loose this morning. well, there are a number of words you can use to describe last night's game between the o's and yankees. but one thing is true -- manager buck showalter and the team have their work cut out for them tonight. >> jamie and christian are in new york with a look back and a look ahead. >> reporter: a not so good morning maryland. rolling out on the wrong side of bed after watching this game last night. let's show you the highlights. the orioles had a great art. miguel gonzalez was on the hill and he was just dominating the yankee bats. then we have a home run from another rookie ryan o'flaherty and another home run by another rookie. you thought three rooks were about to beat the kings. then in the bottom of the 9th joe girardi from the yankees makes the move.

including firefighter. this fire broke out overnight. the house is on denwood avenue and if you're not familiar where that is, it's not far from the road, thurgood marshall high school. another point of perspective of where the place is. now we are going to continue our team coverage right now with more on this story, because clearly this was quite a scene this morning. >> well, tonight we're going to get another look at the candidates on the debate stage. not president obama for governor mitt romney. tonight's debate pits vice president joe biden and congressman paul ryan for a one- on-one and only vice presidential debate. tory dunnan is in danville, kentucky with details of the big event tonight. >> reporter: we're here inside the spin room where after tonight's big debate both campaigns will try to claim a victory. but before that happens the showdown takes place between vice president joe biden and paul ryan. it's the only debate happening this election for the vice presidents. biden's been holding the mock debates every day since sunday. they're lasting 90 minutes each.

12 people and 58 others injured. five story parking garage in florida it collapsed and killed two people. this happened on wednesday. now several others there they were hurt when the roof of the garage fell. creating a pancake style collapse. one person is still missing but the college says no students were hurt in the incident. joy turned to sorrow when a 6 day old panda cub died at the national zoo last month. officials will disclose the information during a news conference and also update us on how the mother is coping with the cub's loss. the preliminary autopsy report showed the panda had a liver abnormality. and a big moment for space exploration. the first ever commercial cargo spacecraft called the dragon is now at the international space station. it docked yesterday morning. bringing with it 1,000 pounds of cargo. this is the first official shipment under $1 billion contract between nasa and a privately owned company space x. news time now is 4:350.

it's been a week since 10-year- old jessica ridgeway vanished when she was walking to police. >> police found a body a few miles away from where she disappeared. could it be the little girl? >> out out of northeast baltimore a house fire also, more on the garage collapse that happened down in miami- dade county in florida. we continue this thursday morning with breaking news out of northeast baltimore. an overnight house fire has killed five people. four of them children and three others were injured. >> abc2 news linda so is live this morning at the scene continuing with the team coverage. linda you've spent some time talking to the victims' families, a really tough

assignment? >> reporter: a very emotional time for these family members who have lost four children and their grandmother. this fire started right up the road in a row home. there on denwood avenue. we have about two dozen family members who came out here after hearing about this fire. what we've been able to learn so far is that it was a grandmother and grandfather who lived in this house with their adult children and their grandchildren. what we know about the victims it was the grandmother who died. we've been told her name is nancy burrell, she was 55 years old. the youngest victim a 1-year- old boy. several children who passed away, the oldest child a 7-year- old who went to ma raffia park elementary school. his name was tykea man lee. they were sleeping on the second floor. the children were apparently all sleeping in the same bedroom. there were about ten people in the house al together and five of them were able to escape. the grandfather had to jump from a second story wi
