and a good thursday morning to you. i'm charlie crowson. >> and i'm megan pringle. thank you for joining us. a lot to talk about this morning. we are following breaking news, a heart-breaking situation happening not far from thurgood marshall high school. >> very hard to hear will morning. five people including four children they have died in overnight house fire. crews have been on the scene all night and we have team coverage right now. we begin with sherrie johnson, she is on the scene and you've

been gathering information for as long as you've been out there. what do you know? >> reporter: well, yes, we are here in northeast baltimore and yes, as you can see, crews are still on the scene at this hour. a few fire trucks have started to leave but we still have a few still looking into their investigation. but again, five people were killed in the early morning fire including a grandmother and four children. the fire started just around 2:00 this morning at 5601 denwood avenue in northeast baltimore. when crews arrived they found intense flames they say coming from the home. and people jumping out of the windows. you know, we are being told about nine people were in the home when that fire started. maybe four were able to make it out safely. and five others did not make it out and perished in that fire. the bodies were found on the second floor of the home. police had to detain one man because he was so distraught over the death. he was actually trying to go back into the home but the police had to detain him for

his safety. two firefighters were injured. one firefighter fell from the second floor of the home down to the basement and landed on another firefighter. now we are told that they both have nonlife-threatening injuries and they're going to be okay. and investigators are still trying to figure out the exact cause of this fire. but they believe it could have started in the basement. and right now, we have abc2 news linda so joining me live here. she's also been out on the scene this morning. and you know, anytime you have deaths involving children it is just so upsetting and the family here, they've just been so distraught. walk around and blankets just not knowing what to do with themselves. >> reporter: they are very tight-knit family. we have about two dozen family members who are just standing outside of the home right now. and being able to learn more information about the victims who died in this fire. we're told it was a grandmother and grandfather who lived in the home with their adult children and grandchildren. the grandmother who was sleeping upstairs died in this

fire. her four grandchildren, a 1- year-old boy, a 2-year-old girl, a 4-year-old boy and a 7- year-old girl. a student who went to moravia park elementary school, all died in this fire. we are told they were sleeping in an upstairs bedroom and all sleeping in the same room when they died. they could not escape. we spoke to the mother of one of those children, she tells us she was sleeping in the living room with her newborn baby. a 2-month-old boy, he escaped the home. she jumped out of the living room window with her newborn. they jumped out to safety. also escaping from this fire is a grandfather who was upstairs. he actually had to jump from a second floor window. he's been taken to johns hopkins bay view center -- burn center to be checked out. we're also told a 19-year-old man escaped from this fire. so you have about four people who escaped including a mother with her newborn child. but five others who died. again those victims, been

identified as 55-year-old nancy worell. she was the grandmother. we have a 7-year-old girl who went to moravia park elementary school. a 1-year-old boy, a 2-year-old girl and a 4-year-old boy. the 2-year-old and 4-year-old were brothers and sisters we want to note. the family member who tells us when they escaped this fire it was so fast, so intense, they literally just had to run out of the house. so they have nothing. the mother we're told did not have home insurance here. so they literally lost everything in the fire. if you're watching this morning, and you feel like you want to donate or help out this family, family members will be out here all day we're told. again, this is the 5600 block of denwood avenue. right now, at this point, we don't know if the smoke alarms in this home were working. family members say they did not hear them go off. when the fire chief came out here one thing he wanted to emphasize was if you don't have working smoke detectors in the

degrees. so these temperatures are on the cool side. definitely need to take that coat with you this morning. as you head out and about. maryland's most powerful radar is dry. and this is going to be the scenario as we head throughout the day. inspect expecting any type of rain whatsoever. the planner shows you that. chilly temperatures this morning and crisp weather. nice and brisk and then by lunchtime. mostly sunny skies and 58 degrees. the high today only around 61. let's get a check now of the abc2 timesaver traffic with lauren cook. good morning. good morning lynned. well the deadly fire northeast baltimore continues to shut down denwood avenue right between bowland avenue and clay berry avenue. if you are traveling in the area, definitely use moravia road as your alternate route. a look at some of the main lines here's what the west side of the beltway looks like at liberty road. everything moving right along. no delays whatsoever. just 11 minutes right now on the outer loop from 795 down towards 95. and as we take a look at some

other drive times you'll notice the rest of the beltway in great shape. traveling the outer loop if 95 all the way up to 83. 11 minutes as well. no delays right now on the jfx heading downtown. looking at an 11 minute ride traveling southbound from the beltway all the way down to east fayette street. that's a look at your abc2 timesaver traffic. megan and charlie, over to you. 5:58 right now. the family of a missing girl they have been praying for her to -- that she is home safe. however, a body recently found and her hoping it is not -- they are hoping it is not her. charlie as more on the overnight developments that happened out of colorado. >> reporter: absolutely break the hearts. 10-year-old jessica ridgeway vanished last friday. her mom says jessica was simply walking to school. but never showed up. since then the search for her has turned up nothing that was until last night. police found a body in open space near the town of arvada. this is in colorado just a few miles from where the girl went

missing. as of this morning the investigators have yet to identify that body. >> the -- arvada police department and the westminster police department are working jointly with additional resources to process that crime scene. at this time, we're unable to make any connection to the disappearance of jessica ridgeway. >> and despite what you just heard there, three sources have told abc news that they have reason to believe that this is the body of jessica ridgeway. it's going to take more time to make a positive identification and crime scene techs will remain on the scene all night. updates for you as they continue developing. this story out of colorado and it's gained national attention. news around the nation, a construction worker trapped in the rubble for 12 hours was pulled out alive. the roof of a parking garage under construction look at this it collapsed. the happened in miami at miami- dade college. now yesterday afternoon was when this happened. that man was taken to the hospital at one point in the morning. two people they died. eight others injured. they're still looking for more

survivors in that collapse. well, what would you do if you saw a car fire? you knew somebody was trapped inside? the answer to that question for two men in minnesota was try and pull the victim out to safety. bryan that polada ended up crashing head-on into another one. she couldn't get out. a sheriff's deputy arrived on the scene and they finally got her out of the car. and take her to the hospital. a couple in the other car, they were hurt and they're recovering at the hospital this morning. pranksters had some fun with a petting zoo. >> coming up we're going to tell you how surveillance video of the animal being stolen led police to sort of a bizarre return. we'll tell you what the story is all about when we come back. he's helping us serve 21 million passengers a year, which helps keep 100,000 jobs that depend on the airport, and that means more cargo for more businesses

reporting live in northeast baltimore, sherrie johnson, abc2 news. 5:59 right now. before you head out the door, lynette charles is here to let you know how to prepare. >> all right we need to prepare with coats megan. very cold out there morning and we can see the temperatures coming in the upper 40s -- or around annapolis the low 40s at manchester. good morning to you. catonsville at 44 degrees right now. 51 centreville and 50 easton. bel air good morning at 46 degrees. so some spots coming in below average. we should be at 47. some above this morning. but all in all, it is chilly. now we have the winds making it feel a little bit chillier out of the north and west now at about 7 miles per hour in baltimore. check out the eastern shore. coming in at 16 and 10 in d.c.. 12 winchester and 13 hagerstown. we have high pressure at the surface today. that's what's working for us bringing all the sunshine that we'll see in here. this cold front moved through yesterday. then we have another cold front that's going to work its way in here as we go through tomorrow.
