that's what's making news in america this morning. >> stay with u metal detectors are coming to baltimore county schools today. it's all an effort to keep your child safe. they spent now days in the cold with a -- four days in the cold with a little bit of food. now the two missing hikers are sharing their story. and one week ago a massive fire ripped through a home killing nancy worrell and her four grandchildren. morning. mount airy coming in at 51- degrees and woodbine 43 and reisterstown at 49 degrees. you still need the jacket the coat as you head out the door this morning. and we do have a south southeast wind in mount airy right now at about 5 miles an hour. and also we're dealing with patchy fog for mount airy to reisterstown and even woodbine this morning, take it easy out and about. we look at maryland's most powerful radar as of now and we are dry. but, this will begin to change more into the afternoon especially this evening. the radar will become more active as we will see some scattered showers and thunderstorms across the area. planner looks like the for today. waking up to -- this for today. waking up to some cool egg temperatures by about -- cooler temperatures by about 9:00, 10:00, temperature coming in about 54 degrees. some sunshine in here to start but throughout the day the clouds will be on the increase. i will call it a sun/cloud mix by lunchtime with the temperature coming in at 66- degrees and our high temperature today flirting with the 70-degree mark. temperatures will be above average. let's get a check now of the abc2 timesaver traffic with lauren cook. good morning. we actually have some patchy

fog to talk about. we are dealing with a very serious crash in northern baltimore county. it involves several tractor- trailers and it has shut down the southbound lanes of 83 that's going to be right between freeland road and old york road. you will want to use york road instead this morning and we will bring you the latest as it becomes available. a look at the west side of the beltway at liberty road. everything moving right along. no delays through pikesville on the outer loop down to 95. this is what the beltway looks like in parkville at harford road, everything up to speed. no problems up to towson this morning. that's a look at your abc2 timesaver traffic. charlie every to you. news time 4:32. beginning the day big changing are coming to -- changes are coming to baltimore county schools. metal detectors will be used to keep your kids safe. linda so is live at the school and what happened a month ago prompted this didn't it? >> reporter: yeah, you'll remember shooting that happened

here on the first day of school when a student brought a gun to school. it's because of recent school violence incidents that starting today they will have access to the metal detecting wands. not random sevens, only when -- searches, only when they have a reasonable suspicion that somebody in the school has a weapon. it's part of the solution to keeping kids safe in schools. recent incidents prompts the change. the shooting here at perry hall high and then just this week a bb gun found at owings mills high. parents seem to be on board with the new policy. >> it would be less likely to bring something like that you know, that could cause harm to another child in the school i would think you know what i mean? whether it be a knife or a gun or whatever it is. >> reporter: so when your kids go to school this morning, this new policy will be in effect

every school resource officer will have access to a metal detecting wand and use them if they feel that a student is carrying a weapon. we're lye in perriable -- live in perry hall, linda so, abc2 news. some disturbing news when it comes to crime in the u.s.. for the first time in 20 years violent crime in the u.s. has jumped. that's because an increase in the number of simple assaults from 2010 to 2011. but for the most part, incidents of rape, sexual assault, robbery and serious crimes involving weapons or injury remained about the same. experts say the amount of crime in 2010 was historically low and the new numbers don't necessarily signal a reversal. all new for you today the amazing survival story of two friends who grew up in maryland after spending days stranded in the glacier national park in montana, the men are now speaking out about the ordeal for the first time. neal peckens and jasonizeen

both experienced hikers but their map blew away the hikers well they got turned around. hiser and peckens spent four days in the snow hoping someone would find them. >> when the man who was out hiking looking for us you know called out to us it huge relief >> the worst part of the whole thing was the fact that we couldn't communicate with anyone back home that cared about us. >> peckens and hiser were down to the last bits of food when they were finally rescued. they don't think their wives are going to let them go anywhere anytime soon. final good-byes today to the victims of last week's house fire. the funeral will take place this morning at mount pleasant church. the five victims were killed when a fire ripped through their home in northeast baltimore. she was 55 years olds and her grandchildren all under the age of 7. taking some of the top

stories this morning. two prince george's county police officers are off the hook. at least when it comes to the most serious of the charges. a judge dropped the first degree assault charge against both men but they're still on trial for second degree assault and misconduct in office. the incident in question happened two years ago after a maryland duke basketball game veiled owe you've seen online for sure -- video you've seen online for sure. anthony bats wants to do it. all he needs now is the city council's approval. last night's confirmation hearing he answered questions and listened to concerned citizens, he's prepared to deal with the strained relations with police and neighbors in some communities. >> will work diligently to earn your trust. we will be professional, we will be courteous, and we will treat people with respect and expect the same in return. >> he is a former police chief and long beach, california as well as in oakland. he was nominated by the mayor and spent some time in

baltimore in summer. the -- in summer. the council is expected to approve the appointment on monday. and listen up because you may have overpaid the water bill and you could be getting some money back. baltimore city officials admit there's nearly 40,000 city water customers who paid too much for their service. they have since been refunded but that's not stopped one official from filing a class action lawsuit. fred con away is speaking monetary -- seeking monetary damages for those affected. it alleges unfair treatment from the city because they allowed businesses to rack up the debt but forced families out of their homes for similar reasons. he's the maryland madoff. that's what if man who brought half of the insurance providers is now calling him. his companies are the center of the maryland insurance administration investigation after hundreds of thousands of dollars wasn't paid from one of his companies to another. goshdy bunch who says she's paled $1 million -- he's paid

$1 million for half of interstate insurance had no idea the business was unstable when he bought it back in june. he says katz owes almost $2 million to that company. katz insurance license is suspended. some of his locations are still operating as part of the state agreement. time now for a check of the forecast. lynette standing by and i know there were a lot of storms across the midsection of the country yesterday causing real problems in tennessee and missouri and arkansas. >> it is headed our way. it will be pushing some showers and some storms our way as we go through later this evening. so we will watch for that. we will still be getting some wet weather which we desperately need. we have the upper level low. you can see the spin across the upper midwest. so the clouds will be on the increase but right now, we're under mainly clear skies. and also we're seeing a little bit of patchy fog this morning as well. so we do have reduced visibility take it easy in some

to steroid shots given from back pain. the government is investigating the massachusetts pharmacy that made that steroid injection. and a new study says patients who took a popular form of antidepressants may be at risk for abnormal bleeding. they are known as ssris like pro sac and paxil. they're known to have links to bleeding in the stomach and the brain. the better the drugs work the greater the risk of bleeding. the author says the medications are still considered safe but people who are prone to brain bleeds should be careful. what happens when kids with adhd bro up? according to -- grow you? a according to a new study the men struggle economically and socially. the researchers found that 31% of adults who had adhd as a child did not finish high school. on average, adults who are diagnosed with the disorder as children had 2.5 fewer years of education than their counterparts. the study was done using adult

but again, as that cold front gets closer to us the clouds will begin to increase as we go throughout the day. so we're going to start you out on the sunny note but we are going to end up on a cloudy note with some showers and possibly some thunderstorms this evening. right now, though you're stepping out the door to temperatures that aren't as cold as they were yesterday. we're still on the coolish side so you still need the jacket as you step out and about. right now in millersville we're coming in at 54 degrees and 50 in sykesville and west friendship at 48 degrees. and the winds will be picking up out of the south today at about 5 to 15 miles an hour. gusts up to about 20, 25 miles an hour. and this is what future trend looks like throughout the day. does a pretty good job here, we can see the showers coming in around 7:00, 9:00. more of the same even through the overnight. so your commute to work tomorrow morning is going to be a wet one. a dicey one but i'll be here to walk you through it and we'll get through it together. we can see the thunderstorms early in the morning as well. then that front clears. we will be seeing plenty of sunshine as we head into friday afternoon. and that will continue as we

class of 2011 owe on average around $26,000. while many graduates still face unemployment, the studies showed even those with debt are better off than those without a degree. a canadian based company will now run two m. a. r. c. train lines. they will be in charge of the camden and brunswick lines. the postal service continues struggling to survive. it can now no longer borrow money from the u.s. congress. they reached their $15 billion debt limit last month. they have enough money to keep funding for the next few months thanks to election mail and holiday seasonal mail. however if congress doesn't pass a resolution soon the u.s. postal service could face bankruptcy as soon as next spring. news time is now 4:49 and being diagnosed with cancer can be overwhelming and tough if you don't have the support you

trails and abc2 news emily shut has the details. >> reporter: mitt romney made a comment about binders full of women when he was asked a question about gender pay and equality and when he did president obama and democrats didn't waste a minute to draw more attention to it. mitt romney sparked a bit of controversy while answering a question during tuesday's debate about equal pay laws, he responded by talking about putting together his cabinet after being elected governor of massachusetts. he pointed to the fact that his staff brought him only male applicants. >> i went to a nups and said ca help us find folks they brought us whole binders full of women. >> reporter: that comment has taken on a life of its own. it has plenty of tweets and its own facebook page. democrats used it to fund raise saying mitt romney just didn't get it. >> we don't have to order up some binders to find qualified talented, driven young women. >> reporter: mitt romney
