metal detecting wands the try to keep -- to try to keep kids safe in school. they won't use them for rand obviously searches. school resource officers will only use them when they have reasonable suspicion that someone in the school has weapon. the council police chief says it's part of the solution to keeping kids safe in schools. recent incidents prompted the change. of course the shooting here at herry hall high school on the first day of school. another scare at stemmers run middle school and this week when a bb gun was found at owings mill high. parents are on board with the new policy. >> they would be less likely to bring something like that or you know that could cause harm to another child in the school i would think you know what i mean? whether it be a knife or a gun or whatever it is. >> reporter: so when your school -- when your kids arrive at school this morning, this new policy will be in effect. every school resource officer in baltimore county will have access to a hand held wand and they'll use it if they think a child has a weapon. we're live in perry hall, the

linda so, abc2 news. in health news this morning, 19 people are now dead as a result of the meningitis outbreak. maryland has one confirmed death and 16 total cases reported. nationwide, 247 people have been sickened and the rare fungal form has been traced now to tremendous id shots -- steroid shots given for back pain. the government is now investigating a massachusetts pharmacy that made the injections. the mosquito season is behind us but this summer was particularly bad. this was the second worst year ever for west nile virus. there were more than 4500 cases nationally including 183 deaths. 25 people in maryland contracted the virus. two died. the state that was most affected was texas. news around the nation for you on this thursday morning, a routine case turned out to be anything but that when a man refused the sign documents at a courthouse. check autothe video from tampa, florida. that's the man in purple.

you can see he simply took off running through the courthouse. police officers eventually chased him down and tackled him. the man was arrested and jailed without bond. he was in the courthouse to be sentenced for getting false information to a police officer. now he faces battery on an officer and resisting arrest. well, a cell phone led police to a man accused of leading them on a chase in an 18 wheeler. this was just released dashcam video showing the pursuit. officers attempted to pull the man over after catching him driving erratically but the driver took off. police say he stole $700 worth of gas and eventualfully flipped the big rig and ran into the woods. authorities had to give up the search until the man used his cell phone and they found him and arrested him. well, sometimes the mood just strikes but you probably have enough sense to wait until you get home. not the case though for one couple in florida. wow. they're accused of having sex on the restaurant table in full view of parents and their kids. we're not making this up. families were eating on the patio as the couple began making out and it went from hot

the fbi is new york police are now working together and doing so they foiled an alleged terror attack. a bangladesh man was arrested for planning to bomb a new york city accomplishment. ed payne has that story. >> reporter: 21-year-old quazi mohammad rezwanul ahsan nafis was taken into custody

wednesday when authorities say he tried to use a cell phone to detonate what he thought was a 1,000-pound bomb hidden inside a van. his target was the federal reserve bank in manhattan. nafis allegedly told authorities he wanted to destroy america by going after the nation's financial institutions. he ultimately settled on the landmark bank. he didn't realize the contacts were actually members of the fbi's joint terrorism task force. new york city police commissioner ray kelly said terrorists have plotted 15 attacks against new york since 9/11. >> we're still very much a coveted target by terrorists who said new york is the top of the terrorist target list in this country and i think this just reaffirms that. >> reporter: kelly praised officers for keeping the city safe. >> i think it shows again that law enforcement is vigilant, certainly we understand that the public can become complacent. we've had no successful attack here in 11 years but law
