metal detecting wands the try to keep -- to try to keep kids safe in school. they won't use them for rand obviously searches. school resource officers will only use them when they have reasonable suspicion that someone in the school has weapon. the council police chief says it's part of the solution to keeping kids safe in schools. recent incidents prompted the change. of course the shooting here at herry hall high school on the first day of school. another scare at stemmers run middle school and this week when a bb gun was found at owings mill high. parents are on board with the new policy. >> they would be less likely to bring something like that or you know that could cause harm to another child in the school i would think you know what i mean? whether it be a knife or a gun or whatever it is. >> reporter: so when your school -- when your kids arrive at school this morning, this new policy will be in effect. every school resource officer in baltimore county will have access to a hand held wand and they'll use it if they think a child has a weapon. we're live in perry hall, the

linda so, abc2 news. in health news this morning, 19 people are now dead as a result of the meningitis outbreak. maryland has one confirmed death and 16 total cases reported. nationwide, 247 people have been sickened and the rare fungal form has been traced now to tremendous id shots -- steroid shots given for back pain. the government is now investigating a massachusetts pharmacy that made the injections. the mosquito season is behind us but this summer was particularly bad. this was the second worst year ever for west nile virus. there were more than 4500 cases nationally including 183 deaths. 25 people in maryland contracted the virus. two died. the state that was most affected was texas. news around the nation for you on this thursday morning, a routine case turned out to be anything but that when a man refused the sign documents at a courthouse. check autothe video from tampa, florida. that's the man in purple.

you can see he simply took off running through the courthouse. police officers eventually chased him down and tackled him. the man was arrested and jailed without bond. he was in the courthouse to be sentenced for getting false information to a police officer. now he faces battery on an officer and resisting arrest. well, a cell phone led police to a man accused of leading them on a chase in an 18 wheeler. this was just released dashcam video showing the pursuit. officers attempted to pull the man over after catching him driving erratically but the driver took off. police say he stole $700 worth of gas and eventualfully flipped the big rig and ran into the woods. authorities had to give up the search until the man used his cell phone and they found him and arrested him. well, sometimes the mood just strikes but you probably have enough sense to wait until you get home. not the case though for one couple in florida. wow. they're accused of having sex on the restaurant table in full view of parents and their kids. we're not making this up. families were eating on the patio as the couple began making out and it went from hot

the fbi is new york police are now working together and doing so they foiled an alleged terror attack. a bangladesh man was arrested for planning to bomb a new york city accomplishment. ed payne has that story. >> reporter: 21-year-old quazi mohammad rezwanul ahsan nafis was taken into custody

wednesday when authorities say he tried to use a cell phone to detonate what he thought was a 1,000-pound bomb hidden inside a van. his target was the federal reserve bank in manhattan. nafis allegedly told authorities he wanted to destroy america by going after the nation's financial institutions. he ultimately settled on the landmark bank. he didn't realize the contacts were actually members of the fbi's joint terrorism task force. new york city police commissioner ray kelly said terrorists have plotted 15 attacks against new york since 9/11. >> we're still very much a coveted target by terrorists who said new york is the top of the terrorist target list in this country and i think this just reaffirms that. >> reporter: kelly praised officers for keeping the city safe. >> i think it shows again that law enforcement is vigilant, certainly we understand that the public can become complacent. we've had no successful attack here in 11 years but law

enforcement can't be. >> reporter: nafis came to the united states on a student visa. he was a cyber security major at southeast missouri state university from january to may of this year according to a spokeswoman for the university. i'm ed payne reporting. >> a pair of hikers who spent days lost inside montana's national park are sharing their story of survival. the two experienced hikers from virginia got turned around after the map blew away and one of them slid down in the snow. they were stuck for four days. the hikers say they were down to their last bits of food when they heard the cries of rescuers. >> when the man who was out hiking looking for us you know called out to us, it was certainly a huge relief. >> it's over you know. we're headed back. >> the worst part of this whole thing was the fact that we were not able to communicate with anyone back home that cared about us. >> both men are well despite losing 15 pounds each during that trip into the wild. time now for five things you may want to know on this

thursday, thousands of previously secret files from the boy scouts of america are expected to be made public. the files were kept on cases of alleged sexual abuse. and president barack obama will be making an apierce on "the daily show" with jon stewart tonight. his second visit as president. well, we got lucky with a mild winter last year but what to expect this year? the climate prediction center will announce the outlook for the coming winter of 2012 and 2013 later today. the california symphony is paying tribute to the late u.s. ambassador to libya tonight. the concert is called salute to a hero. christopher stevens died when the u.s. consulate was attacked last month. get news for the holiday shopping season. toys "r" us will extend the free layaway plan until november 16th. it was set to charge a $5 service fee. however they exended the program after seeing the popularity among the customers.

well, a new effort to stop texting and driving could be coming to our state. massachusetts and connecticut are developing high visibility antitexting enforcement pilot programs. that is more than a mouthful. this includes stationing police spotters on highways' overpasses looking for drivers who can't keep their fingers off the key pad. they're going to train police officers on better spotting methods for texting drivers and also they're developing new media campaign. well, you remember going to gino's as a kid and getting a special sauce. today you can relive the moments at one of the original locations. the new one in glen burnie officially opens today with a rib upon cutting ceremony at 1 11:00. he himself is supposed to be there. well, if the ravens and texas on sunday tailgating at the bank won't make a lot of sense. but why not head over there tonight? the fifth annual biggest tailgate party takes place at the m and t stank bade yum. it's -- m&t bank stadium.

lot of spots. such as annapolis also tillman right now. gwen oak at 51 degrees. 52 in chestertown and 48 degrees in federalsburg. now high pressure is off into the atlantic right now. it will stay that way as we have increasing clouds throughout the day. that cold front will get closer to us. pushing those storms in here. so we do have some wet weather on the horizon. so again make sure if you can't get back home today, take the wet -- rain gear with you because we are going to get wet. and we do need the rain. now we look what's going to happen when it comes in here and we're looking around 7:00 this evening, and that will linger even into tomorrow morning. some thunderstorms as well. and behind that, we clear out nicely. plenty of high pressure building in with plenty of sunshine in the forecast as we head into the weekend. but for today, going with 70 degrees and it is going to be breezy. 55 with some scattered showers this evening and 73 and warmer by tomorrow with early showers and here's a peek of that

it was a huge surprise for three kids whose father works for the military as sergeant crank fulton of iowa hasn't seen his children for seven months. so he made the trip to their school. his son was totally shocked. >> wow. i thought he was going to be home tomorrow. >> well, this is a seventh deployment for fulton who serves with the iowa air national guard. he says he was nervous about the idea of surprise because he wasn't sure how his kids would react. >> we skyped at least twice a week and she's like your name is daddy right? >> fulton's top priority now spending time with his family and he also wants to chow down on the favorite american foods the main one being pizza. sir you can have as much as you want. you may be thinking about
