big event coming up this sunday in hunt valley. it's the 20th annual komen maryland race for the cure and the fight against breast cancer. abc2 news is a proud partner with the organization. and we'll be out there live for you throughout the day on sunday morning. brittany fowler joins us once again and we were talking about it earlier, the money is used from race for the komen maryland and you were saying system of the specific hot -- some of the specific hospitals in maryland? >> we're very fortunate in maryland, we have very strong institutions and the 25% that we send off to national headquarters earmarked specifically for research typically maryland more than that 25% comes back. so really 100% of what we raised in maryland typically stays within the state. we fund programs to johns hop kins and we fund programs at mercy. university of maryland baltimore. it's a lot of research that's taking mace right here in maryland. >> this is a big big event on

road. abc2 news paul jaffey sent us those photos from the scene. it involved three tractor- trailers this morning two of which hit each other head-on. three people have been critically injured and again the southbound lanes will be shut down through the morning rush. so you will want to use york road instead. more problems out on 695 where we have an accident in parkville. it's right along the inner loop here at harford road. do expect a seven minute delay right now traveling from 83 down to 95. as far as the west side of 695 is concerned, here's what it looks like at baltimore national pike. everything moving right along just a three minute delay right now on the outer loop from 795 down to intertate 70. we have some problems in anne arundel county a crash along the southbound lanes of route 295 at 19 r5 and another crash on route 50 along if eastbound lanes at cape street. that's a look at your abc2 timesaver traffic. charlie over to you. when your children head off to school you shouldn't have to worry about the safety and that's why beginning today some changes are coming to the baltimore county school district.

they're going to start using meal detecting wands in an effort to keep your kids safe and abc2 news linda so is live this morning in perry hall high school where linda this all started i guess in essence at that school back in august. >> reporter: yeah, you'll remember the shooting that happened here on the first day of school. when a student brought a gun to school and shot another student in the cafeteria. it's in response to school violence incidents like this that starting today, every school resource officer in baltimore county will have access to hand held medal detecting wands. now those wand will not be used for random searches. but resource officers will use them when they feel there's reasonable suspicion that someone in the school has a weapon. the council police chief says it's part of the solution to keeping kids safe in schools. recent incidents prompted this change of course the shooting here at perry hall high, there was another scare at stemmers run middle school, and then just this week, a bb gun that was found at owings mills high. parents seem to be on board

with the new policy. >> it would be less likely to bring something like that or you know that could cause harm the another child in the school. i would think. you know what i mean? whether it be a knife or a gun or whatever it is. >> reporter: so when your kids go to school this morning, this new policy will be in effect. school resource officers in baltimore county will have metal detecting wands and they will use them if they feel a student has a weapon. we're live in perry hall, linda so, abc2 news. 6:48 and right now crews are on the scene of a three alarm fire in cecil county. the image now. look at the size of the fire. here's all we know right now. a home on willow drive in elkton went up in flames just before 4:00 this morning. no word right now on any injuries, we'll have more as information becomes available. both on the air and online at abc2news.com. take a look at that picture. well, today a family has the unimaginable task of burying five loved wins at once. -- ones at once.

a grandmother and her four young grandchildren are being laid to rest after their house caught fire last week in baltimore. the memorial service is being held this morning at 10:00 at mount pleasant church. the funeral will follow immediately at 11:00. the four grandkids none of them were older than 7 years old. if it doesn't, anne arundel county executive leopold is going to pay his own attorney fees if the ruling is not in his favor. after she complained he made inappropriate comments. leopold says he is spite told a government funded -- entitled to a government funded defense. he won't pass the legal bills on to taxpayers if he doesn't get favorable ruling. but this morning, 21-year- old sits in jail. the fbi says that quazi mohammad rezwanul ahsan nafis went as far as to load a gun with what he believed to be

explosives connected to what he believed to be a detonator then parked the van outside the building. he walked to nearby hotel and that's where police were waiting for him. turns out one of the people he got the explosives from was an undercover fbi agent. >> when you obtain a truck and you bring it to the site of a major federal facility and you try to detonate it that goes way past aspirational to me. >> he is from bangladesh and has only been in the country since january. he has ties to al-qaeda he said in court and is charged with trying to conduct an act of terror in the united states. authorities say he came to the u.s. explicitly to carry out the attack. for the first time in nearly 20 years u.s. government says crime rates in the numbers are up. the u.s. department of justice says telephone surveys of 75,000 people showed an increase of around 22% in assault. that pushed up the overall rate for violent crime for the first time of a number this high
