sandy could impact our weather, but florida is getting a taste of it. >> tropical storm warnings are up. let's take you to our sister station. this is midway between west palm and fort lauderdale. we can see it and hear it.

>> reporter: things are deteriorating getting worse and worse. they're topping up the waves. it's causing a lot of beach erosion much the sand gets kicked out into the see. this is six to eight foot waves. the only people swimming are kite surfers and they are loving this. these are the kind of days they have been waiting for. it gives them the kind of conditions they want to be in. of course, these waves cause a lot of problems. we have piers that have been closed down because the waves are crashing into the pier and creating dangerous conditions for anybody to be standing out

there. a couple of piers closed down. we have schools closed for today and tomorrow, so some closures. luckily, it doesn't look like we'll have any severe weather, really, just tropical storm force winds. down in florida, we're used to that. these guys are loving it. back to you. that familiar look of an approaching hurricane. if we take a look, you can see large powerful hurricanes category two strength. the distance is huge from the leading edge of this. from the center of the storm just a few hundred miles. the big concern with sandy is not so much what she will do to florida. it would be a windy weekend. what we would look for over the next 72 hours is the movement of sandy along the east coast and eventually rounding, we think,

around north carolina moving toward the mid-atlantic state. north movement is 17 miles an hour and 1,000 miles away. here's the tropical track, the latest out of the national hurricane center, giving it that turn around the carolinas, a big blocking high pushing the storm, we think, somewhere between the maryland coast and new york. it's going to be somewhereno ca0

winter, though misty. our cold front beginning to march as we go into friday and saturday. railroad, two weather systems at play. hurricane sandy to the south but number two is this cold front which will bring in the cooler air as sandy begins to make here way up the carolina coast and between somewhere and maryland and new york city. here's the setup that the colder air beginning to make its push as it goes into the first half. sandy will begin to edge up into the carolinas. the cold air marching in. that will help connect with sandy. here are the two potential tracks, mike masco putting this graphic together. you can see the winds gusting. if we get that track into maryland, into delaware, that's the more concerning track for us here locally. perhaps, though, we'll get that more northern track which will

bring it toward long island new york. there could still be coastal flooding. we'll have a winds wrapping around out of the west. that's going to pile up chesapeake bay. overall we'll have an impact no matter what. major storm potential, long duration event. we will see the crawl. we'll have wind and rain each of those days much the flood potential will be there. how much depends on the exact final track of the storm. we'll have a better handle friday into saturday. here we go 58 degrees, mostly cloudy. tomorrow, no big deal, cool and misty, mostly cloudy at 68. the next few days prepare for the storm. prepare for the worst case scenario. it's not going to hurt. as we go from sunday into monday and tuesday, this is the key time frame for us.

that second half of sunday into monday and tuesday. high winds. and, again, that is the overall setup. the biggest thing that has changed from this time yesterday is the consistency of the sort of model projections to bring this into the east coast somewhere between virginia beach all the way into we'll call it cape cod or upstate new york, so there's a window here. most of that window is north of us, which would be beneficial to our area to have the storm track north of us, but it might not. we're tracking this. >> what is the two scenarios that we have? when will we know which one's coming. what will be the window of opportunity to do something? >> the scenarios are less further apart than they were yesterday. we know somewhere between, new york and down through virginia. the cone will tighten up tomorrow, tighten up more

it moves north on sunday. we're looking for the potential of power outages. it's one of the biggest things to prepare for in case we get a direct hit. looks like we'll get a glancing blow. that is a strong category 2 and a large hurricane. the outer edges reaching from puerto rico up into south florida where the winds are pick up near miami. here's what's concerning. the track has consistently taken sandy up and along the carolina coast. that big blocking high, big dome of air, helping to push the storm, turn that track and a cold front dipping out of the north and helping to hook into the storm means it's likely to turn inward and into tuesday. we could see powerful nor'easter conditions. this will be a power house nor'easter storm as it comes in and
