how strong things really were. check out this new video. you usually don't see those trees on top of homes and cars, but rarely do you see an uprooted tree in action. >> this is on the north shore of long island, an area that was hit so hard. luckily no injuries were reported from this incident. this video, though, so stunning. i actually looked over at lynette while i was reading it. she had her hand over her mouth and that's pretty hard to get you to be surprised by something, especially when a storm comes along. >> i know, wow, but just to see that in action. you know it can happen, but when you see it, it just makes you drop open your mouth, exactly like i did. as you said, megan, we are out of the woods, we are seeing the recommend napts of sandy moving -- remnants of sandy moving towards western new york. that's where she is right now. we are dealing with drying out as we head through the rest of today. let me show you where the wet weather is. mainly snow back off toward the west. that's what sandy did, that's some of the components of it, dropped plenty of rain across

the area, but western maryland and also back in west virginia dropped lots of snowfall across that area. here closer to home we are drying out for today. it is going to be a chilly day, though. when you wake up this morning, these temperatures are cold. look at emmettsburg and glenn el coming in at 37 degrees. davidsonville at 40 degrees. as we go through the remainder of today, this is what you can expect with your planner. it's going to be a raw, chilly day coming in at 43 degrees by 9:00 and by lunchtime today we'll be at 49 degrees under mostly cloudy skies. let's get a check now of the abc 2 time saver traffic with lauren cook. good morning. >>reporter: good morning, lynette. we are dealing with a lot of debris on the roads this morning following hurricane sandy and if you are traveling in baltimore county, definitely watch out for the whiskey plant that has collapsed on york road at rail avenue. you will want to use 83 instead. for those of you in white marsh, we are dealing with a little bit of water, a little bit of flooding right now on route 40. it's going to be at days cove road. if you are using 95 in white

marsh, no problems to report whatsoever. it will be clear from route 43 all the way into the city. and if you are traveling on 695, as we check in and take a look right now in parkville at hartford road, everything up to speed. no problems to report as you do travel up to 83, but just a reminder, the roads are going to be really wet. we're still dealing with power outages, and if you do come across an intersection without a working traffic signal, be sure to treat it as a four-way stop. megan and charley, over to you. when hurricane sandy blew through and blew out the power for a lot of people in our area, they were left in the dark. >> there are still thousands in the dark this morning and abc 2 new' linda stow is live in towson with the latest on restoration efforts. how are things going today? >>reporter: i just got off the phone with the spokesperson and she tells us overnight significant progress was made, more than 30,000 homes were restored. we're at the corner of stevenson and hillan in towson and as you can see, you are still going to have power outages. interest are more than 85,000

customers still in the dark with bge. right at the corner this light is out. i'll tell you already this morning we've seen several cars just fly through this intersection. so as you get ready for school this morning, as you're about to head out for work, this is one thing to keep in mind, you're still going to see areas in the dark from this storm. and remember what the governor said. he says you need to treat these intersections like a four-way stop. so if you're heading out to work, if you have a kid, a high school kid who is going to be driving to school this morning, just a reminder, you need to stop, treat it like a four-way stop. if you come upon an intersection where the traffic lights are out. now, as far as bge restoration goes, yesterday crews spent a lot of time doing damage assessment to critical facilities such as 911 centers, hospitals, making sure those are back up online. we've learned that about 1,000 crews are dedicated to what's called a safety standby. so if you see a downed power line somewhere, bge will send out a safety standby crew.

they will literally be by that downed power line to make sure no one touches it, no one runs into it, and they'll do that until crews can come out to actually repair it. but, again, this morning, as i check bge's website, there are 85,000 customers still in the dark. they have restored more than 260,000 homes, but, again today they hope to make a lot more progress, we're told about 5,000 crew members, support staff are all working on this. as you just saw right there, that bread truck just flew through this intersection, that's one thing you want to keep in mind, it's still dangerous, it's still dark. if you're heading out this morning, just be aware to take it easy, take it slow because you might come upon some dark agencies like this one here at stevenson and hillan in towson. live in towson, linda stow, abc 2 news. some schools are back in session, but not all kids are waking up grumpy, it is halloween. 17 baltimore county public schools will remain closed this

morning as a result of sandy. they don't have power. crews are working right now to restore the power at all of those schools. a handful of schools in hct and dutchess county are also -- rockland county are also close if your school is one of those head to the website, we have a complete list for you. the 2012 election is less than a week away, but you can resume early voting today. governor martin o'malley says early voting will pick back up because of sandy. this morning the governor was forced to cancel it for monday and tuesday. now, to make up for the lost time, early voting will be extended through friday with additional hours. the facilities will now be open daily from 8:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. and after two days, the new york stock exchange finally reopens this morning. new york city mayor michael bloomberg is expected to be the one who rings that opening bell. this is the first time in more than 25 years that the markets closed due to a weather-related incident. time now for a check of

that forecast, where we stand today, the past several days have been very tough on the abc 2 news weather team. lynette is in now with maybe some good news. >> i do have some good news because things are going to start to get much better out there. let's start off with some temperatures. i'll step out so you can soak them all in. we're at 37 degrees in em etsburg, sparrows point coming in at 40, annapolis more of the same. gaithersburg 49, 42 in goldsboro and 40 in federalsburg. you get the picture this morning that we are chilly outside. this will continue for the next several days. so chilly this morning, even as we go into the afternoon we're still going to be dealing with chilly temperatures, so you really need that coat this morning and keep it as we go throughout the day. we do have the remnants of sandy still churning some snow, still a very large system, dropping rain north all the way back toward the south and west, that's where you're seeing the snow, west virginia getting in on about two to three feet of snow across that area, even western maryland also seeing

that. i pull it in, you can see what's going on around our neighborhood, our neck of the woods this morning, mainly dry, but we are dealing with plenty of cloud cover this morning and that's going to be the name of the game as we head throughout the day. maybe a few peeks of sunshine, but all in all we are going to be on the wet side of things. let's send it over to you. >> thanks so much, lynette. we want to remind you, sandy, we dodged a bullet here, still a deadly storm, killing at least 50 people and that's in the united states. >> a handful of those deaths were right here in maryland. hear from one of the victims' sons as he remembers the last conversation he had with his father. also ahead this morning, the storm may be over, the cleanup just beginning, from the flooding to the downed power lines and trees, torn up yards, the state now dealing with some significant damage. today the governor will see the devastation firsthand. and did sandy affect your travel plans? we'll tell you about airlines and trains as they're trying to get back to business as usual.

, sandy is to blame for three deaths right now, this is in the state of mayoral. firefighter officials say a 74- year-old man named donald kinata, he was killed when a large tree fell onto his house. kinata was the only person home when that tree came crashing down. his family spent part of yesterday gathering personal belongings and boarding up that home, what's left of it at least. kinata's son says he is haunted

by the last conversation he had with his father. >> i was standing in this doorway talking to him about it. he said what's the matter, son? he said i tell you i'm a little nervous, i gotta take and leave here and the trees are swaying. i said what's your big concern. a tree might fall on you, pop. that's the last time i seen him. >> the other two victims died in traffic-related snenlts one in montgomery county, one in pg county. the storm has passed now, but sandy has left destruction and devastation in her wake. today governor martin o'malley will tour some of the hardest hit areas. he will see the firsthand left behind. those who live on the tangier sound say this my be the worst flooding they've seen since 1985. the governor referenced this. this was when hurricane gloria went. he will be joined by the mayor to get an update at the beach. some of your favorite places in ocean city are going to look a little different when

you head there over the summer. sandy's winds, they blew away the gazebo attar's island, -- fagar's island. the owners say they hope to reopen by the weekend. meanwhile, a large part of that famous fishing pier also destroyed. that happened by the waves and the wind. so today the army corps of engineers will be in ocean city. they're going to be inspecting the dunes system, plus power companies are working very hard there to restore the power up and down the coastal highway. >> that is an ambitious idea to have them back open by the weekend. >> they do say because most of their damage was outside, they should be able to open up their doors because even in november people will want to go there. >> they want to get back to normal as much as they possibly can. with sandy out of the way, lynette has a check now that this system has moved on. >> things are going to start to get back to normal today. that's good timing because we have halloween tonight. the kids are excited for that.

we look at maryland's most powerful radar for now we are dry, just some cloud cover out there. back towards the west you are seeing a few rain showers, also mixing in with maybe a little bit of sleet, definitely the further west you go, back into western maryland, we are looking at some snow with that. we do have flood watches, warnings up there and also some snow advisories as well. so back off towards the west, that's where you're dealing with the snow advisories, and then here closer to home, so fredrick and also montgomery county dealing with some flood warnings, and, again, this is mainly for the creeks, the rivers across this area. now, temperatures coming in on the cold side this morning. this is what we're really going to contend with as we go throughout the day, so make sure you have the heavy coat. 40 degrees in arnold, iamsville coming in at 39 degrees this morning. these temperatures are well below and will be definitely well below as we go into the afternoon. this is what's going on, remnants of sandy pushing off towards the north.

valley at ja won road, things up to speed. roads pretty wed, so be cautious as you head out, but no delays down to 695. it will be clear once you get onto the jfx and head downtown. this is what the beltway looks like at liberty road, no problems to report here. no delays to report whatsoever heading down to 95. but one thing you will want to keep in mind, we are experiencing a lot of power outages still, so if you come across an intersection without a working traffic signal, be sure to treat that as a four- way stop. all mta service is actually now operating as normal as well. megan and charley, over to you. if you had plans to fly over the past few days, sandy certainly grounded you, but today most airports are back in business in some capacity. as of now the majority of flights coming into bwi are on time. but if you're heading north, a lot of those flights remain canceled because of sandy. make sure your flight satus is checked and you are aware of it before heading out to the airport. in the meantime, new york's jfk airport and newark liberty

international in new jersey will open at 7:00 a.m. both will have limited service. in the meantime, new york's jfk and nerk liberty international in new jersey, they are going to be opening at 7:00 this morning. both will only have limited service, so keep that in mind if your travels are those supposed to take you that way. one of new york's busiest airports is shut down today, it's going to remain that way. the tarmac at laguardia international, it looked more like a beach. you can almost see waves and standing water there, wind, rain, flooding it, forced all three airports that serve new york city to shut down. that was the situation during the storm. they're slowly opening back up, but not all of them. news time now 4:47. the storm forced president barack obama and mitt romney to cancel a number of campaign events. >> but with just a few days to go before the election, the campaigning back on today. so we'll have an update on what both candidates have planned for today. also an interesting story today, health benefit you can get from watching horror films. it might surprise you.

at the republican national convention this summer. with a natural disaster, it's natural for party lines to be plurred. on nbc news christie offered up praise for the president. >> the president has been outstanding in this, he has expedited the designation of new jersey as a major disaster area. >>reporter: vice president joe biden says he'll resume campaigning today. >> assuming things continue as they are, we're going to resume our schedule in florida as scheduled. >>reporter: mitt romney will also stump in the sunshine state, swinging through jacksonville, taryp and coral gables -- tampa and coral gables. his running mate paul ryan plans appearances today in wisconsin and thursday in colorado. both campaigns are trying to make up ground after having to take time off due to hurricane sandy. what we know so far is that mitt romney will return to virginia on thursday after canceling events there over the weekend. in washington, i'm torre dunham, back to you. we are getting new video in overnight from new york to show you of just how bad the flooding is in the big apple. this surveillance video from a railroad tunnel just under the

east river. it connects long island to the mainland. if you look to the left of your screen, you can see torents of water pouring into that tunnel. this is going to be a big problem for days to come and transportation in new york has ground to a halt. millions of people who use the subway system daily, most of that is under water. all that water now needs to be pumped out and there was no drainage system for those tunnels, this story will likely continue for a number of days as well. the city has to figure out how to get that salt water out so they can get the system back up and running. they're saying it could be reopened by the end of the week, but some are saying that estimate is a little bit ambitious. but, megan, it could be weeks before all train lines are fully operational once again let's go back into the studio with megan and lynette displvment that is going to be a big story as we go into that because so many people travel up to new york or have family up there. it's going to be tough for a while. >> it's going to be tough. it's sad to look at those images. here at home things are starting to dry out a bit. we still have the snow in western maryland and also in

going to be pretty chilly out there. we are dealing with some storm damage up in baltimore county. there has been a partial collapse of the historic whiskey plant in cockiesville, so two northbound lanes at york road are shut down at railroad avenue. if you are traveling in the area, stick with shawan road, warren road or 83 as your alternate route. as we take a look at 83 here in hunt valley, no problems to report. 95 also going to be nice and clear. there are no problems right now heading downtown, as we check in and take a look at 395. as we other drive times, you'll notice 695 going to be in great shape, just 11 minutes right now on the outer loop from 95 up to 83. same traveling on the west side from 795 down towards 95. megan and charley, over to you. amtrak services are slowly being restored. it will provide modified service between newark and points south beginning today. but they're not going to be operating trains out of new york. crews are still working to remove water from the tunnels and make necessary repairs. amtrak says the amount of water they're deal
