and businesses. and this morning. how are things looking a day later. >> reporter: we're here and north charles and the road and can you see getting to charles street. and work had to be suspended and crews will be back first thing in the morning and cleaning up the mess. that burst yesterday and sent the water rushing through the street. it was so bad that water flooded over a span of 5 blocks. and old and the city says the breaks can not be avoided because of how hold the infrastructure is. they were stuck and businesses flooded and people had to deal with the dirty water because of the work being done.

commuters should not be detoured. >> if you are coming into the area and heading east and west, you want to go far afield and take 25th street. stop here and cross net royal east and west. the further are you away. maryland avenue will be packed tomorrow and st. paul. move further away. can you get through. >> at this point they're not sure how long it will take before the streets get back to normal. there is water flowing and lots of repairs to be done. the crews will be done. they suspended the work because they were afraid of striking gas lines. do not try to drive through the area, you will see a lot of yellow tape. and heading down this way 5 blocks is up is penn station. the roads are detoured so you want to make sure to avoid the

area. >> this is not the first time they dealt with no water or breaks. >> this stems from the aging infrastructure. and they are trying to fix it and it will not be quickly. it will cost. >> think say over the next five years they will pay for it and they are working to get to the point where they will repair 30 miles of pipe her year. the price -- per year. the price tag is $300 million. they hope to get some help but they hope the cost will come down to the taxpayers. and working to keep our streets safe and the mayor will swear in dr. tony bass as commissioner. it will take place this evening. he was confirmed as the new leader. more legal trouble for the former mayor. shelia dixon is accused of

violating probation. she is more than $13,000 behind on her payments she is required to make to charities. she agreed to make $45,000 in donations. that's a deal she charged after being charged with perjury and theft. now 4:36. everyone is coming together helping the victims of sandy. students are collecting supplies to help with efforts and cash donations that will go to the red cross. tomorrow the students there will make thank you cards and they will send those to staff and agencies working around the clock. and verizon is sending 600 technicians to help with the outages. they are supposed to leave from perryville this morning and they are sending a caravan of trucks and other vehicles. people in the northeast cannot catch a break. it was the rain and winds

courtesy of sandy. this morning it showed thanks to the powerful nor'easter. look at the video. it is bringing down the trees and weakened by sandy. the mayor has ordered some evacuations and four inches of snow is on the ground in parts of connecticut they are dealing with eight inches. those in new jersey have more than 5 inches of snow on this thursday this morning. as we know when there is a storm there tends to be a lot of outages. and that's what happened to people in new york and new jersey. according to the companies, 60,000 customers who lost power are waking up in the dark again for a cold second time in less than two weeks. >> we get our power on friday and is back out today. frustrated is a fair word. >> some don't have the power on after sandy the new storm could

the man who shot a congress woman will learn his fate. he shot the then representative gabby give fords in the head -- giffords in the head. she and her husband will be there for the sentencing. six others were killed and 12 injured. he is accused of maken an anti-islam film and stirring up violence in the middle east. and he is in prison but it's not for the movie because he admitted to using an alias that violates his probation from the bank fraud case that he was convicted on. he used another name in the

case. the movie portraying the prophet as a womaniser and killer and child molester t sparked protests in several countries throughout the middle east when it was released. and a military judge says that he must shave his beard and now the lawyers for the major are appealing that ruling. hassan is accused of killing 13 people and wounding 2 dozen during a shooting spree in texas. his lawyers say it is an expression of his faith. the appeal asks for the trial judge to be removed from the case because of alleged bias. it has been put on hold while the matter is resolved. he faces the death penalty if convicted. a teen is behind bars accused of killing his girlfriend. the 19-year-old tyrone austin shot her last month and left her for dead. she was still wearing a school uniform. in the weeks leading up to her death she told family and friends she had been abused for

combination of expiring cuts from the bush era and billons in spending cuts. ending the cuts mean most families, like you, me, our bills to the tax bill is going to go up $1000. the spending cuts will be made in defense, medicare and unemployment benefits n all the tax hikes if they stay in place for 2013. driving that car over the cliff, though, means negative economic growth. the result of that will be the recession. think in terms now of what is happening in europe and happening there for the past year and a half. we have been seeing the headlines here. it is something we could see on our own home turf. the dow dropped and investors are worried but there are some on both sides of the aisles and now saying they want to play hard ball and see who blinks first ahead of the deadline. and more than a month away and
