temperatures will remain chilly as we go throughout the day. we can see the lunchtime temperature coming in at 49 degrees. and the high will be at 51 that's below average. let's get a check of the abc2 timesaver traffic with lauren cook. >> reporter: good morning. off to another chilly start and unfortunately we are dealing with the crash up in parkton on 83 along the northbound lanes at york road. but here in hunt valley, everything will be up to speed. no problems driving from shawan to southbound nice and clear to the beltway. looking at abc2 timesaver traffic drip drive times beltway in great shape. looking at normal conditions just 11 minutes on the outer loop from 795 all the way down to 95. no problems to report on 695 from parkville all the way up to towson and if you are traveling on 95, the fort mchenry tunnel is nice and clear and if you are in columbia it's going to take you 12 minutes to travel northbound all the way into the city. that's a look at your traffic. megan and birthday boy back to you. >> this morning a former maryland state trooper is being hailed a hero.

but he says that's not the case e says it was all about self- preservation. but you can't tell that to the people he saved. abc2 news sherrie johnson joins with us more on the story and if you know anything about law enforcement they will say once an officer always an officer. >> reporter: that he true. joe appelby retired on july 1stfrom the maryland police department and recently he showed he was willing to serve and protect others e was unarmed when he walked -- he was unarmed when he he walked into the middle of a robbery after 10 a.m. in cecil county. he didn't know the owner of the chrome dairy and deli told the robber she had more cash in the back. she was stalling waiting for police to arrive. 13 of his 28 years on the job he spent on the special tactical assault team so he had a plan. once he was in the back of the store, along with the cashier, another customer and the robber he made his move and took the gun away from the robber who then fled. >> it happens in that little

switch clicks in you and you do what you have been trained to do. certainly i don't recommend that everybody do what i did because unless you know what you are doing and unless you practiced it you know time after time after time, it's  probably not going to work out the way you want it to. >> reporter: very good advice there. the suspect got away with a little cash and they got out safely. no word on whether police captured the suspect. sherrie johnson, abc2 news. not guilty that is the verdict for the bowie state student accused of killing her roommate. they deliberated 7 hours before finding alexis simpson not guilty. she was facing several charges she told the court she stabbed frazier out of self-defense. a very strange thing turned up on a property in reisterstown. a human hand. the contractor found it wednesday in the 300 block of hedge pocket way. the medical examiner confirmed it was a hand and we doesn't note property or what was in the home or business.

police are investigating. a train collided with a parade truck in west texas killing 4 people. a number of others had to be rushed to the hospital with a number of injuries. police say the last truck in the parade route was crossing thetracks when the train slammed into it. medics on the scene are trained to handle situations just like this but it was difficult to handle. >> we had the situation under control and deliver the best patient care possible in the types of situations. as far as as long as i've been here i haven't seen something to this magnitude. >> several soldiers were among those on the truck. police couldn't say how many of those were killed or injured how many of them were in active military. 5:35. a story you have to hear. a little girl's life is turned upside down when a drunk driver hit her family's car paralyzing her from the chest down. you would think that would damper her spirits she loves to smile and talk and when the man

showed you this at 40, across the eastern shore, we are looking at 41 in centerville and 39 easton and aberdeen at 37 degrees monrovia at 35. so, i am hiding the rain i am going to step out so you can see where it is. it's to the south of us right now. southern maryland. this is trying to trek off towards the north but for the most part we will stay dry and it will diminish and it's tapering off going through the morning hours. so we will get sunshine in here mixing with clouds. as high pressure builds in here from the north and try to get in here. but all in all, we still are going to have a chilly day on tap this afternoon. look at future trend. as we go through the next several days, we will have another coastal disturbance try to work its way in here. but it stays away from us going through the weekend. we are looking to be dry as of now. that's good news. who wants the rain on the weekend right? 51 is my high for today. temperatures below average. partly cloudy skies as we go through tonight and more of the same a few clouds out there. and it's going to be cold again
