lewis p esedo. police are looking for a reason why the driver within the into that work zone. it's as bad as you can see. so bad that there's very little to show you. the impact was so hard that a hat became jammed into the wind shield. >> approximately 9:00 this morning there was a work crew in the area of route 40 and belvidere road. a ford focus, 2006 went into the work zone. as it went through the work zone it struck two construction workers. >> reporter: the two men were cruet workers from -- contract works from prince george's county. the construction zone was clearly marked. state police say they're in the sure why the focus strayed into the work zone but they said it's time to remember the need to

slow down in work zones. >> we have the move over law. if you see a worker, move over. give them some space. >> reporter: at this point the driver has been questioned. they will give all their findings to the cecil county state attorney's office. last year there were close to 700 people injured in crashes. roosevelt leftwich. two city officers and a baltimore county officer injured. two officers were breaking up a drug deal when alicia marie hoffman of bel air julyed in her car and fled -- jumped in her car and fled. police stopped the car at joppa

road. a third officer was injured. all three officers have been checked out. she has been released from the hospital and will face assault, traffic and drug charges. police said the car she was driving was not hers and was not stolen but it did, however, have fraternal order of police tags. the maryland legislature has kicked off its 2013 session today and some of the items could affect your wall left governor o'malley was unsuccessful in raising taxes. the governor propose add one cent sales increase or tax increase on gas lean. he said the money would be used to fund road construction projects. the proposal has lawmakers divided. >> hopefully, we'll find some sort of a revenue source. the washington metro area is

desperate for revenue for transportation. what we need to do is start spending the transportation dollars on the things it was allotted for. if we do that, we don't need to raise any taxes. >> gun troll and wind power alternatives are other measures that will be heard in annapolis this year. the city's speed camera system is undergoing an overhaul. the mayor spoke about the changes. the city switched to a new vendor. the company will operate city speed cameras. all 83 will be evaluated and some will be replaced. the mayor says the ultimate goal with speed cameras is to keep all of us safe. >> we strive for zero errors. that's the goal. this is about making sure hour young people are going to and fro from school and -- to and from school and have safe passage. we've seen the reduction in

speed. that's why it's important to see that we get this right. >> the city said this will not have to absorb the cost. the new cameras should do a better job of focusing on one speeding car instead of getting distracted by others which led to many false tickets. >> police are searching for a man wanted for an attempted burglary. the victim arrived on north bend road to find the suspect trying to break into the front door of list home. he confronted the suspect who took off. the victim was labor to snap a picture of the suspect with his cell phone. police are hoping this picture will help identify the man. they estimate him at 40 to 50 about 5'" and 220 pounds. hoe was carrying a set of either hedge trimmers or bolt cutters and a blue nylon bag.

>> we're all seeing an increase of flu activity this time of the year. this is earlier than we've seen in at least recent years. so, you know, we'll have to see a how the season progress. we hope we're at the peak but we don't know that. >> you can help the state tracking the flu. theres an e -- there's an email program you can sign up for where they ask if you have had the flu or any symptoms. so if you do get sick from the flu, where should you go? experts say you should head right to your primary doctor first eye recommend people seek out their primary care physicians first. they will know whether or not you're at high risk for a problem. they may be able to facilitate your path way through the

emergency room and there may be arrangements set up for specific urgent care. >> now most of the time the flu can be resolved with rest and taking in fluids. you should seek medical attention. the elderly and young children also at high risk and should see a doctor for the flu. we know that children are susceptible to flu complications. 18 children have died. it can be hard to shield your child from getting sick. we have more on how you scan cut your child's flu risk. >> according to the centers for disease control, chers five year -- children five years and younger are at a higher risk of getting the flu. there's a checklist of the things your daycare provider should be doing.

>> i have a 3-year-old, 7-year-old, 5-year-old and 4-year-old. yes. i would doian thing for them. >> reporter: so deputy stevens loaded his daughter and decided to drive her to perryville elementary school himself. he asked the principal if he wouldn't mind stand watch. >> i told her i will sit in my squad car outside the school for a couple hours. that's my day off. that's the least i could do. so i did that and then i actually came home and she thought it might ab good idead to put my uniform on. so i did. >> reporter: deputy stevens' wife christi was moved by his gesture. >> he called me throughout the day to say i'm still sitting in the parking lot. i'm going to sit here for awhile

and have lunch with her. as a mom, i thought this is sweet. i was grateful for her that she was able to have that as well as proud of my husband. so i threw it on my facebook page. >> reporter: the response from her friends was almost immediate and it went viral. >> there were over a million likes which is mind blowing to me. i've received messages, hundreds of facebook messages from people from all over the world, just thanking us. >> reporter: but perhaps no one liked the deputy's actions more than his daughter and her classmates. >> i like when my dad goes to school and all the kids think it's cool. >> reporter: do they feel safer? >> yes. >> reporter: in cecil county, jeff hager, abc2 news. >> cool to have a dad like that.

now the principal at perryville elementary school applauds the deputy's actions and says there's been an outpouring of support from other parents including police officers, firefighters, military person nail from the aberdeen proving ground. research shows more expensive breast cancer screening methods may not be beneficial for older women. it can pick up smaller women in younger women. but in older women it may result in unnecessary treatment for cancers that would not harm them during their lifetime. researchers say traditional mammograms appear to be just as effective as the digital version. >> nice and clear. as we take a 3d view to the

west, you can see yes, more active weather toward texas. some of the rain may be in here by friday night into saturday morning. in the meantime, temperatures are cool as conditions dry out after a little bit of patchy drizzle. 4345 at bwi -- 45 at bwi. as we take a look at the weather in motion, how about towson. west middle. you can see the conditions are cloudy. still some snow in the high country. if you're a skier, got next two days. temperature also warm up as we move into the latter part of the week. speaking of the mountains, how about durango, colorado. they were in the 50s today out in durango but none of that by game time on saturday. we're looking at teens, a big cold blast at mile high stadium. it could be a defensive game. i think the harsher the conditions, the more it plays

into the defense's hands. winds light, not really a factor. temperature wise a slow fall. generally cloudy conditions, not expect new precipitation but tomorrow will be a -- will be a day with sun. a day we will push to 50 degrees as the weak cool front goes by. on friday night, a weak disturbance will mean showers. we take friday night into the early part of our saturday morning. i think we're dry during the day. temperatures will hover where they are. there is much milder air and that will make a push in here as we go into the weekend, as we go into saturday afternoon. sunday is warm, mid- 60s even. overall, the pattern stays quiet. high pressure will keep things cool.

the cool area of air, not frigid for january, but cool. there's that chance for showers. the mild air comes in saturday into the rest of the weekend. tonight down to 36, a few clouds. tomorrow 51 or so. sun and clouds. this is 10 degrees above average but not has mild as say saturday and sunday into monday. then tomorrow night 35 on a northeast breeze. then we hover right at 50 for two more days. we get that warm push starting saturday. saturday with that warm surge there could be some showers. this looks drier for sunday. then as we work into early next week, the mild pattern starts to break down. we'll bring in rain. i think the temperatures will drop off toward the end of next week even starting late wednesday. for the next seven days things will stay consistently warmer than average for early january. if you're a mild weather fan, you're loving it.
