still a few scattered showers. we continue to see temperatures drying out. clouds holding tough. there could be passing fog. temperatures right now safely above freezing. although, in the north eastern corner near cecil county you are a few degrees bo. we'll be in the 30s for much of the evening. we'll talk more about the wild changes temperature wise. each day this week will be very, very different. we got the seven-day forecast in just a minute. the central part of the nation gets a nice warm break. we have the very latest. >> reporter: roads from northern illinois to iowa are nothing but a dangerous sheet of ice.

>> i had good traction until i got off the sides of the roads and it was slick. >> reporter: one iowa driver lost control flipping his truck and having to be extricated. this road was so slippery, it sent it sliding across like a toy. the storm is heading south, bringing more freezing rain, frigid temperatures from ohio to alabama. that moons the cold rain falling in new york city could make an exit. forecasts say it could reach up to 60 degrees by wednesday. it as a warmup coming from the central part of the country. kansas city 68. 70 in memphis, 78 in houston. warm news is not only good news. this weather tug of war is a perfect breeding ground for more dangerous conditions. >> although there can be isolated tornadoes with this

are lighting up for a house call segment. we're talking about inflammatory bowel disease, also known as ibd. we're joined by a doctor from the university of maryland school of medicine. thanks for joining us, very interesting topic in terms of some of the calls we're getting. talk about how this affects women. >> certainly. one of the most common questions we get in our practice is whether women with ibd can become pregnant and the short answer to that is yes. women with ibd can become pregnant. fertility rates comparing women with ibd to the general population aper to be the same overall. the caveat to that is women who have had surgery, specifically a surgical intervention called ippa for ulcerative colitis do have decreased fertility. also, individuals with crohn's disease with deep pelvic surgeries are at risk for

decreased fertility. we commonly get question of so what do we do after having an raising like that? it's not hopeless. women tend to do well after invow trough fertilization -- in vitro fertilization. in addition, there are women who voluntarily choose to be childless. there are a variety of reasons why. again, this requires close discussions with women to ensure that they understand their disease course and process and ensure that they realize they cran have a healthy pregnancy and healthy child. >> so if you do get pregnant, what about the medication? >> there are a variety of medications that are safe during pregnancy in women with

had to worry about was the interest rate. wrong. this morning retailers can charge you a fee for swiping your credit card. how much? up to 4% of your total purchase. if you buy a digital camera for $200, you could be charged an extra $8 for using a credit card instead of cash. >> i would be upset oar loor luckily for this shopper she's in new york, one of the 10 states that have barred retailers from charging the fee. marylanders will get charged. some retailers have said they won't be passing on the surcharge to cuss mrs, though. wal-mart said we are not interested in surcharging customers to allow credit card companies to continue charging unfair fees. >> that would be the smaller retailers or service providers who might do it but it's really anybody's guess. >> reporter: so don't panic yet. stores have to make sure you

welcome back to house calls. doctor, we're talking about women's health and ibd. is it something you can pass on to children if you do get pregnant? >> ibd is not an infectious disease or not a genetic disorder. there's a low risk of passing it to an off spring. crohn's it's less than 7%. in ulcer aive colitis less common than that. if both parents have it, the risk goes up to 30%. really, genes alone do not cause ibd. you have to have exposure to environmental antigens or something in our diet that allows the disease to develop. >> we're taking quite a bet of calls. this is a disease that people don't really like this talk about. we'll be talking about it for

let's get a look at your latest. we have had some drizzle. no frozen prsmghts temperatures about five to 10 degrees above freezing. some rain showers overspreading the eastern shore, queen anne's county and some of the showers do reach across the bay, very light precipitation, though. not a lot of rain. again, on the broader perspective most of the precipitation has pushed to the north and east. let's take a look super bowl xlvii, still make out the logo on federal hill. 41 at bwi. it's getting longer. the sun is up at 7:17. the sunset was at 5:23 this evening. show you a little bit of weather in motion. you can't make out the key bridge. so yes, reduced visibility. there will be fog to deal with. watch out for that. the next two nights, could have reduced visibilities. havre de grace up on the east

side of harford county, a beautiful shot from the tide water marina, but it does get a little foggy in spots and the same deal in towson. kind of dreary the next few days. we'll see a few sunny peeks. i don't expect more until the end of the weekend. very light breeze. that's trying to push in slightly milder air. we also have the cold wedge that's locked in across northeastern maryland. from the inner harbor up to cecil county chilly, 30s. moving around the boundary the next day or two, the trick is the result of the stalled boundary. we'll continue to see the fog which will only get worse. i think fog will be a real possibility. though frozen precipitation continuing to clear out to the

north and east. many schools have a two-hour delay. no surprise. there tomorrow we're looking at no travel troubles expect for reduced visibility, especially around daybreak, could be foggy. then mostly cloudy. then we'll bring in our next weather maker. this boundary, a fresh cold front, ahead of this, warmer from wednesday, but that boundary will bring in the rain late wednesday into wednesday night. here's the setup. the mild air is in place. it will not get in here tomorrow. looks like our cold wedge will be far enough south to impact baltimore northward with cold air in the upper 40s, but that warm surge will arrive and make it in through the day on tuesday before another cold blast comes in into the end of the week. so back and forth we'll go temperature wise. terms of the wintry weather that is blowing into new england. tonight mist and fog but no

hallway to make reading fun. our education reporter sherrie johnson introduces us to boys, books and basketball. >> look at this shirt. it's a great shirt. >> reporter: it's 8 a.m. at steven forest elementary school in columbia. school doesn't start for another 45 minutes but the library is packed with fourth and fifth grade boils. it's part of the program that's a book club for selected boys who need a boost in reading and confidence. >> the more you a read, the -- you read, the better you can spell. >> reporter: they alternate book club discussions one week and basketball the next book. after the book discussion, it as time to hit the courts. school data shows males are falling behind female students in reading. this program is turning things around. >> it's a gel it make them lifelong leaders, not just this

year, but i want them to learn to love reading. as they leave us and go into middle and high school, i want them to continue to pick up books. >> reporter: they help one another and form new friendships while developing a love of reading. educators have seen an improvement in test scores sense the program started three years ago. >> the kids have read three novels outside of what they do in the classroom, probably not. we want them to read at home, at school, on their downtime, free time. >> reporter: these students are on the path to suck spessments sherrie johnson, abc2 news. new tonight, twitter branches out for for a new way to tweet short videos. >> reporter: for twitter users posting a photo has been the

primary way to post an age. now they're unveil an app that lets users original video inside a tweet. the premise is shorthand sweet, just like a tweet. instead of 140 characters, videos are limited to six seconds or less. those animated video files are used to express various internet means. many have dubbed vine instagram for video and twitter's challenge to the photo sharing app which is owned by facebook. twitter added photo filtering so users don't have to go to another service like instagram. right now vine is only available for i-phones. i'm karin caifa, abc2 news. >> apparently there's already some crossers over the video
