facebook. so if you are connected, we will let you know. there's an app to down load so keep that in mind but in the meantime, lynette charles will let you know what you are facing. >> what we are dealing with mainly this morning is rain coming down across the area and also fog. so there could be reduced visibility. there is reduced visibility i should say across the area. so take it easy on the roadways. let's start out with maryland's most powerful radar because we have observations now of flurry action light snow around frederick and that's what we are seeing here in the blue color around ever green point. we can see stone barn station and churchill and along i-70 is going to be a very slick roadway. you can be seeing snow piling up across the area this morning. but then we take it across the eastern shore where we are dealing with just solid rain and moderate steady rain at this time around oxford, easton and st. michael's and tillman and fair bank this morning. heading throughout the day. we will switch all over to rain and then what happens is on the backside of this, we will wrap

it up with snow. measurable snow. we will talk about that coming up. but with the slick roadways, and the travel impacts we have awinter weather advisory in effect until 10 this morning. let's check the abc2 timesaver traffic with lauren cook good morning. >> reporter: good morning. as you mentioned we are dealing with a wintery mix in frederick and here's a live look at interstate 70 east of 270. prepare yourself for slick conditions and fog is going to be an issue so leave plenty of distance between you and the car in front of youch heading over to baltimore county, here's 83 at york road. and parkton no delays whatsoever and it's going take you 22 minutes to travel from the maryland pennsylvania state line all the way down to the beltway. and as we check in and look at the other abc2 timesaver traffic great shape from 95 to 83. that stretch will take you 11 minutes and over on the west side, conditions nice and clear just an 11 minute ride on the outer loop from 795 to 95. that's a look at your morning

commute. now over to you. news time 5:32. some are calling it a once in a lifetime storm for new england. but for baltimore probably a lot of rain but when is it going to hit and how will things look right now because does have ripple efients effects throughout the region -- did he -- effects throughout theregion. sherrie johnson is at bwi airport what do you hear about closings cancellation and delays. >> reporter: the rain is coming downright now pretty good out here -- down, right now pretty good out here i checked with bwi and flights are on time. we are not seeing delays or cancellations. they have flights that are coming in. you know we were looking up until about 8 or 9 right now they are saying status on time. no delays. but, airport officials encourage folks to check online or call your airlines just to be sure before you make your way to the airport. but right now, things are looking like they are on time at bwi thurgood marshall bwi airport i talked to the state

highway administration and they have trucks on the road in howard county but they have now put additional trucks on the road in baltimore county in owings mills area. they said now temperatures are dropping they are starting to see freezing rain and so they have actually deployed several trucks there to put down sand and salt to make those roadways safe for drivers during the rush hour commute. also looking at amtrak here, amtrak is suspending service between new york and boston starting this afternoon. airports across the country are preparing for problems and nearly 3,000 flights have been canceled across the country. but so far, passengers are taking it all in stride and again, here at home again, the state highway administration says that they have deployed several crews in the baltimore county and howard county areas. and again, they are keeping a close eye on the roadways and sending those trucks where they are needed. of course, you can get an update and stay with us on twitter follow us on twitter at abc2 news. reporting live here at bwi, sherrie johnson, abc2 news.

5:34. only on abc2 we speak exclusively to the mother of a woman who is stabbed to death in front of her two children- side her baltimore county apartments. linda so is here with what the victim's mother is saying and why she believes the police didn't do enough. linda. >> reporter: well the man charged with killing the woman's daughter had threatened her daughter in the past. the two had dated briefly. police knew the suspect was a threat but the victim's family doesn't think enough was done to protect her. katie hadel here with her daughter ava was stabbed to death in her apartment on tuesday. police have charged jeffrey shiflett with the murder. abc learned he sent threatening letters to her while serving time in prison for robbery and he was released in december and repeatedly violated parole by making more threats. because he had no ficked address police couldn't find him. investigators tried to protect aheadel who was four months pregnant. they visited her mom's house where aheadel was staying several times a day but on tuesday, police say she didn't

follow the safety plan and went to her apartment where she was murdered. aheadel's mom says her daughter did tell police she was planning to go there on tuesday. >> we thought notifying police she returned to her home in the pikesville precinct where the suspect knew she lived. >> they knew she was there and they knew -- we asked them thursday for a safety plan. katie and i sat there for one hour with them and asked for a safety plan. we have been asking for five years. and we never ever got it. >> reporter: shiflett is heldwithout bond and a fund has been set up for her young daughter and the information is on abc2news.com in the slide show. linda so, abc2 news. advocates for gun rights will be in annapolis and they are holding the second amendment rights rally expect to start at 10 -- expect to start at 10 -- expected to start at 10 this morning.

rallies have been held across the country with the talk of more gun control looming. it's not often police officers have to track down one of their own especially when the person is accused of killing another officer. authorities are focusing on christopher dorner around the big bear lake area. this is just east of los angeles. he is accused of killing three people as you see by the photographs. he is a highly decorated person. one of the people killed was an lapd officer and her he feeson aand another -- fiancee and another is is a officer in a squad car. sees he is seeking revenge for being fired. >> if you read the manifesto this is a lapd is is a specific target. but all law enforcement is targeted. this is a van detta against -vendetta against all of southern california law enforcement. >> snow near the big bear area could affect the search and urged people in the area to

remain indoors. they are hot on the trail of dorner. a lucky day for edwin perez who was prepping the bar at a restaurant in florida when an suv came crashing right into the building. his manager saw the car coming and yelled for him to watch out. he jumped out of the way. he and the driver were not seriously hurt but that video is incredible. this time year we have the threat of house fires ever present. >> and now the city fire department is is announcing new steps towards equipping homes with smock detectors and that's thanks to federal morning. >> preparing for a winter blast. how some are loading up on the salt and sand to keep the streets safe and as clear as possible. look at that. how do we take an unpolished room and make it shine?

5:41. here's perspective from a bird's eye view of a sand stockpile in chelsea massachusetts. dump trucks are loaded up in preparation for the weekend's snowstorm. boston may be covered in two feet of snow within 24 hours. it was not -- it has not fallen yet but street crews are salting the road. wind will also be a big concern with all of this because gusts could reach up to 75 miles per

hour along the cape cod area. >> all right that can create massive snowdrifts and a number of school delays are being announced. this may be preemptive but lynette will let us know about the forecast in bit as to when we could see some of the severe stuff. baltimore county hearford done howard harford county scuse on a two-hour delay. the schools announcing delays but the heavy stuff is not here. >> not yet but if you want accurate wheel give you accurate with meteorologist lynette charles. there's a lot of stuff going on. >> there is a lot of stuff. i will step out of the way. we have the rain coming in. we look at the green and that's light rain. then we look towards the yellows and oranges and that's moderate steady rain across the area. and to couple that we have fog. i will show you that in a second but we cannot forget we are dealing with light snow around frederick county this morning. take it easy on roadways and mixing with freezing rain and also sleet. now here's the reduced visibility fog playing a role in this for today.

this morning, especially only about 5 miles in baltimore. 7 in easton and 3 in frederick on top of that snow. heading off to school it's going to be a little dicey out there. let's check the abc2 timesaver traffic with lauren cook. >> reporter: the wentry mix is falling in frederick so if you are traveling in that area take it slow, be extra careful because it will be slick especially along interstate 70. 83 heading downtown is nice and clear. no problemswhatsoever. tunnels are in -- problems whatsoever. tunnels are in great shape. the west side of the beltway at baltimore national pike, traffic is moving along. no delays up to 795. that's a look at your abc2 timesaver track. now over to you. 5:43. looks like we are going to be spared the brunt of the winter storm. here in maryland, though, that is the case but others in other areas the country is not solucky. >> it's a once in a lifetime storm so see how people in the neighbors to the north are getting ready for old man

how. what is this all about. >> reporter: thanks to a grant from bge, the baltimore city fire department will be able to purchase about 800 smoke detectors for families in the city. the grant will be presented at 10 at the hardy fire station. mayor and fire chief will be there to accept it. baltimore city fire department has been installing free smoke detectors in homes since the 1990s and they want to continue it with the plan. if you need a smoke alarm if your -- in your home and you live in the city call 311 and firefighters will come out within two hours to install it. linda so, abc to news -- abc2 news. five things to know on this friday morning, first lady michelle obama is heading to chicago tomorrow to attend a funeral of a teen killed there. the victim performed at president obama's inauguration last month. police say she was not likely to be the intended target in the shooting. today's meeting of the sandy hook advisory commission has been postponed due to the impending snowstorm. members will meet next friday

>> lynette you are watching this and seeing the blob coming up from the south. >> exactly. and this is the energy maker and the thing that makes the storm combining with another one. i will show you in a second. but as you step out, maryland's most powerful radar is picking up on heavy rain and moderate rain and it's all over the place and sleet and freezing rain and snow across the area this morning. so you need to take it easy as you step out and about. now, we are going to be dealing with change in the forecast. but at the surface, these are the two systems i am talking b so this is the one that is plaguing us this morning. it's in here and we will see this one towards the west move east and will face together this afternoon. once that does, we will have that area of low pressure really start to bomb out or strengthen as it moves towards the north and east. once it get past us, by the time the moisture gets together, we won't be in the heaviest stuff and that's why the target is new england where they will see two feet of snow locally even more than that. but here back at home, on the

backside, yes, we are going to be getting our measurable snow as well. as we look at abc2's most accurate future trend we will pick up on the timing coming in with the snow. we are thinking around 7 this evening so we have a mess of a commute this morning with that within theory mix switching to rain going -- wintery mix switching to rain going into the afternoon. by the evening snow across the area lingering into tomorrow morning and gets out of all sa done this is what we can expect. we are going to be seeing snow totals maybe about 2 to 4 inches in northeast the frgt to the north and east you g so we are talking about harford and cecil county and around baltimore, 2 to 3 inches is a possibility and the further to the south you go maybe 1 inch but again we are talking about that rain snow line. maryland is always on the rain snow line. so depending on where it is further to the north that is where we are going to be dealing with the heavier snowfall totals and if it comes further south, maybe 3 or 4 we

will keep our eyes pinned on that. but for today, this is what we expect. again rain by 3:00 and then it switches all over to snow as we go into friday. don't forget the wendy conditions. we will have wind gusts up to 40. let's check the abc2 timesaver traffic with lauren cook good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we are dealing with a wintery mix in frederick. if you are heading out to interstate 70, you want to be extra careful. there are going to be slick conditions. and as lynette mentioned, we are dealing with changes. so this rain that we are dealing with across the region will likely change overto snow. this is the beltway in pikesville many no delays what over and east side will be nice and clear from parkville all the way up to towson. and heading downtown, you are looking at an 11-minute ride on the jfx from the beltway downtown to east fayette street and everything is up to speed through the fort mchenry tunnel 8 minutes on the northbound lanes of 95 from the beltway all the way to the toll plaza. that's a look at your abc2 timesaver traffic. now over to you dogs in
