instructor during the exercise. during a press conference last night, the commissioner would not say why live rounds were being used during the session. the injured officer works for the university of maryland as a campus police officer. he is in his 40s and this was his first police job which he started back in july. the chief surgeon at shock trauma says the office are remains in very grave -- officer remains in very grave condition. >> he is stable but any thoughts or predicts about long- term neurologic outcome are way, way too early. >> reporter: the family is asked his name not be released. maryland state police will handle the investigation. live at shock trauma, linda so, abc2 news. two university of maryland college park students are dead and another is in the hospital. the suspect dayvon green shot both of his house mates before turning the gun on himself. sherrie johnson has the latest

on the story. >> reporter: according to his family he suffered from mental illness. we visited the rosedale neighborhood where his family lives. no word on green's exact illness or what medication he was taking. 23-year-old green got his undergraduate degree from morgan state university and was getting his graduate degree in engineering from maryland. police in prince george's county says he killed one of his roommates and injured another before killing himself outside the college park home. the two victims were undergraduate student at the university of maryland. the 9 millimeter handgun used in the killing was bought legally in boughtmore county. atf is looking at the stash the weapons including a machete and fully automatic weapon. he did leave a note describing his thoughts before killing a roommate injuring another andkilling himself. >> the family let our detectives know that he had a condition for at least a year

and that in the past, he has been prescribed medication for this mental illness. >> reporter: the atf is trying to determine how the shooter bought his gun. maryland law states in some cases a person with mental illness cannot poe seas firearm. a state -- a firearm. a state task force is studying the he issue -- issue and will make recommendations to changes. police say amanda miller gamma relationship with a victim at north harford high school in december. deputies arrested miller on monday. she is on administrative leave penning the outcome of the investigation into the charges against her. new this morning fire damages a home in northwest baltimore. look at this video. it happened in the 2200 block of madison avenue after 7 last night. no word right now on the cause. check abc2news.com or follow us on twitter for the latest. today is ash wednesday and the pope is peeking -- spending
