the coverage this morning on the officer trainee who was shot in the head during an exercise. and officials say officers have been interviewed who were present during the training. a statement reads this is conducted as a criminal investigation with the purpose of determining if a crime occurred and who is responsible for that crime. the investigation could take weeks. the city police internal affairs commission are conducting their own investigation to find out whether department policies and procedures were violated. the officer who fired the shot has been identified as william scott kearn. he is a veteran of the baltimore police department. a mother and her sons are recovering after being hurt in a fire. it broke out on law street. it started in a bedroom of an apartment. the 26-year-old mother and her children, ages 2 and 4 suffered serious burns. they were able to make it out

we're back with a look at what is happening today. a woman from the area, janet jackson, will be a recipient of the citizens medal, that's the second highest civilian award. she is a professor and the creator of a non-profit organization geared towards helping women with disabilities improve their quality of life. he will present the medal to a veteran and to six teachers killed during the sandy hook massacre. and chuck hagel will have to wait to find out if he will be the next secretary of defense. senate republicans have succeeded in filibustering the nominee for the job. for the first time, the

nomination has been filibustered. lawmakers will look into the nomination again when they turn from the recess at the end of the month. and a debate nationally and here in the state. we're talking about the effort for gun control. advocates will be talking about the implications of the governor's firearms safety act. they will comment on parts of the bill that make the criminals out of law-abiding citizens. the future of anne arundel county is fuzzy but the picture could be more clear today. the act going county executive will announce if he will run for the seat. he is filling in for the former county executive who stepped down after being convicted of misconduct in office. another possible candidate for the job could be the former wife of former governor robert ehrlich. there will be no retrial for john leopold. his request has been denied.
