a woman walking her dog in pasadena on sunday got a whole lot more than she bargained for. >> an apparent grenade turned an otherwise wise quiet neighborhood into something different. >> reporter: the unsuspects neighbor walking her dog on 12th and pasadena way have discovered the cola can or the caution sign but she couldn't miss what looked like a real grenade. >> my son had walked up there. the company -- cops told him he couldn't go up there. >> reporter: the anne arundel county fire chief said they weren't taking chances. >> this would be devastating to someone in the area or the individuals close to the device. we treat a device as if it's live. until it's rendered safe and put

in an area that cannot affect anyone we treat it as a live grenade. >> that means bringing in a bomb squad. >> they have the robot checking for the grenade. >> the experts ended up doing what they do best. they blew it up. while no one knew if it was real it made for an interesting afternoon hoot road was blocked off at our driveway. we found out there was a hand grenade that was found. >> wow. anne arundel county fire officials said it's not uncommon for people to report finding grenades in vacant or abandoned homes but they rarely turn up on the side of the road. city police are trying to find the man who forced his way into a north baltimore apartment this weekend. this happened in the gated

community near loyola university. a woman was going into an apartment when a man carrying a gun came up behind her and demanded money. the suspect forced his way into her home where he took her purse and fled. at this point they have not release pad description of the -- released a description of the suspect. we're working on what happened when a baltimore police trainee was shot in the head. the new director, major joseph smith, will be introduced during a news conference. we just got off the phone with shock trauma. they say the victim is now in serious condition tonight. now the very latest details on the deadly stabbing of a student at the university of maryland eastern shore. detectives offered a $2,000 reward to identify those responsible for the death of edmond st. clair.

the 22-year-old died saturday after he was stabbed by a group of students. police believe this followed an ongoing dispute. st. clair was a junior biology manager. the latest on a four-alarm fire in pennsylvania. the body of a woman and a girl were found. two others insides house, a man and a 13-year-old boy escaped. three firefighters were hurt. one was treated for second-degree burns. that firefighter is listed in critical condition. still no worth on what caused the fire in lancaster, pennsylvania. our abc2 news investigators are working to warn you of some of the tax scams. tax season is prime-time for scams, especially because of the amount of personal information you have to put up. the bbb said your best bet is going with an established preparer who has been in the same location for some period of time.

all right. our health alert begins with the flu outbreak. the worst of the flu season maybe over. reports dropped for the third straight week, this according to the centers of disease control and prevention. at last count 31 states reported flu-like symptoms. flu deaths continue to go up. 64 children have died from the flu this season. want to change your child's behavior? being selective of what they watch on tv is a way to start. the study shows when preschoolers watched shows that stressed compassion and cooperation, they tended to act that way themselves. when they saw shows with violence they become more violent. parents replaced violent shows

with educational programming and the second one did not change their viewing habits. after a year those who watched more kid friendly programs were less aggressive. >> all right. we're back to our house call segment with dr. jeffrey rosenthal from the university of med maryland medical center. we've been talking about congenital heart disease. tell me what the university is doing partnering with research. >> we have two ongoing research projects trying to help children with obesity and other cardiovascular risk factors -- high blood pressure, lipid abnormalities, and trying to help them develop life-style choices and care plans that will help make them healthier as adults so they can avoid some of the adult forms of

reviving this center. >> it's a lot of work. it's a lot of effort and there's a lot of things we're still figuring out but the reason we took it on is, one, we didn't want to see the building just close indefinitely. we didn't really know what the future was with regards to rec and parkses running it. it's an important thing to have in the community. >> it's a win-win for the volunteers. they get to use the recreation center for meetings and it will be a safe place for kids. >> i bought a home here a year and a half ago. i learned about rec centers trying to get this up and running for schools. and, you know, they were playing outside on the street. it would be a lot better if they were here. >> we moved to baltimore four years ago and came because we had a sense this would be a great community. i want to make sure that we keep

u.s. naval academy, not a bad day at all as we observe washington's birthday. take a look at some of the current conditions right now. basically we'll skip past that. right hard 40 degrees. take a look at some of the conditions neighborhood by neighborhood. i'm skipping head. let me see if i can back up and show you what we'll be looking for tomorrow has we kick off the day. looks like eventually in the upper 40s a potential icy mix from glen el west seeing a little bit of a wintry mix. same deal as we take you into carroll county tomorrow, maybe a brief icy mix going over to rain quickly early in the morning right around the westminster zone going west. for much of the state, much of the hear conditions will be in the form of rain tomorrow. so take a look at the setup. clear across the region. a few clouds beginning to edge.

the trend showing increasing clouds overnight. as we bring this in, again, starting off at 9:00 in the morning starting to edge its way in through hagerstown and sleet and changing rapidly over to rain as we push toward noon and rain through the baltimore or d.c. hear toward midday. then we clear out quickly tomorrow evening. in the wake of that system not a lot, just partly cloudy conditions, colder and windier weather. we'll briefly get into milder air as that surges in. then the cold air begins to make its push toward the middle part of the week. it will be windy and cold. that front continuing to march in, gist very -- just very briefly and the cold blast will make its presence felt. tonight down to 28, cold and breezy. tomorrow we're talking temperatures only in the upper 40s, a possible a.m. previous wintry mix west. we're talking the western
