of smoke. this was smoke real thick. >> in that split second most of us would face two options. back out and call 911 or run head-on into the fire. >> help went up the steps yelling for him. help finally called him and reached down and grabbed him and pulled him out of the house. >> that still wasn't enough for kevin. he knew his neighbor clifton reed had medical equipment inside the house so help went inside for it. >> when help went in to get the oxygen bottles, the smoke was too much. he fell down and collapsed. >> reporter: when the 27 firefighters arrived, kevin and clifton were in the yard suffering burns on parts of their body. they came over to see what was going on. what they saw was a lot to take in. >> all i saw is my dad was -- i saw that he was coughing. i saw that he was hurt.

i started crying. i didn't know if he would be okay. >> yeah, it was scary. he was laying on the ground. >> kevin's family looks at him in a new light now. >> i'm very proud of him, very proud of him. >> yeah, he's now a hero. >> never really expected him to go into a burning house and i was just really scared for his wife. i didn't know if he would be okay. i think he's a hero. >> in brooklyn park, don harrison. >> kevin was taken to the hospital, treated and released. he is in critical but stable condition. >> 35 years in prison. that's the sentence for the teenager who pleaded guilty for the shooting inside a -- on a perry hill high school. >> take a look at these three

still photos. they're taken from the surveillance video -- cameras. that's robert gladden, jr. he's holding the shotgun. five seconds later show staff members trying to subdue him. it looks like gladden being held up by snack machines. in court today the attorney said gladden had no reaction to the sentence. he agreed to a maximum of 40 years in pries son. the judge came back with 335-6789 the mother of the victim, daniel borowy said there's no sentence that would help her family recover. >> everybody lost. i mean, he needs to be punished, but i'm a person. my heart goes out to him, too.

february is heart health month. abc2 is partnering with the university of maryland to take your heart health calls. thank you for joining us. trant plans cardiologist. let's talk about heart failure. how do you note difference between heart failure and someone who need as transplant. >> when your heart is failing, your heart gets weak. many of the symptoms are fatigue, shortness of breath. your lung starts to fill up with fluid. it starts backing up. you can get swelling in your

legs, swelling in your belly. those are the main symptoms. >> treatment options. >> there are a lot of different treatment options. we start with medical therapy. there's something called ace inhibitors, beta blockers. we also use diuretics to get the fluid off. >> you brought some props. >> theft are called l vades or left ventricular assist devices. this are pumps that support the heart when people get sick with heart fai little devices that are surgically implant here. there are a couple of different types. they're so small. they're put in by a surgeon, a cardiothoracic surgeon that works with our team. they essentially pump the blood out of the left ventricle or the main pumping chamber of the

now a brand-new study finds tanning parlors are fighting back. researchers surveyed tanning salons in missouri. 65% would allow children as young as 10 to 12 to attend. only 19% advocated the use of sun screen and none asked if a patient had skin cancer or took light sensitive medcations. maybe the greeks and romans had it right all along. a study shows that a mediterranean diet reduces heart problems by 30%. those who ate a diet full of nuts, extra virgin olive oil and fruits had few are health

problems. >> not a bad deal. sunny skies. beautiful, beautiful weather. lots of bright skies. temperatures feeling warmer than they were. direct sunlight can make it feel 15 degrees warmer. that's what we had going out today. let's take you to maryland's most powerful radar. we're all clear but there are winter weather advisories posted for tomorrow into tomorrow night for the mountains. we're talking elevations over 2,000 feet. we're going to get weather in here for sure. it's going to be rain, dealing with a much more spring like go around. you see the deep moisture through florida, despite clear skies over maryland. there's a tremendous area of moisture that will intensify. right now temperatures well into the upper 40s, slowly falling through the 40s this evening. initially we're down around the freezing mark. this is after we touch 50.

check out the regional view right now, some mid-level cloud cover. that's going to clear briefly before we bring in the main weather event as we go into the day tomorrow. dry morning commute might be sunny. things change dramatically by tomorrow afternoon. expect to use the umbrella. this is 3:00. heavy rain, steady rain moves. this is fairly intense. this band corks in fact provide an inch or more of rain from that one center wave. the total storm totals could get to two inches of rain by the time this clears out. wednesday looks dry and breezy and actually relatively mild against the big wave of rain overnight. take a look at temperatures. overnight will be near freezing. then we'll be into the milder condition. 40s with all the precip. so no winter weather threat east of hagerstown.

hagerstown west, your travels take you to i-60 west. you'll hit winter weather. one area, secondary system in texas. the whole thing could burst on us. 44 as the rain moves in, gets pretty heavy and steady. the main threat is going to be the flooding as we go through the overnight into early wednesday. wednesday clearing, 57, mild. thursday 50. as we look to the weekend, not much in the way of new storm systems but we will get some cold fronts. that will ramp up the winds friday into saturday and sunday into monday. no big warmup in sight except wednesday when we get to the upper 50s. 40s and sun, that's not bad. >> it's going to be early rain and late. >> we'll get an noon in there and then colder this weekend. >> you want to pitch in and help

kevin fuller ton made a decision that may have saved his neighborhood. when a man was trapped inside, help ran in to help and then ran in inside to get the medical equipment. kevin was treated and released. from a burning home to a burning car. two policemen who crawled in to save a teen crash. the early morning crash trapped the 18-year-old girl. the two pulled her from the wreckage, giving her a chance at life. both men received the medal of vaf valor. >> the only smoke you see rising from camden yards is from bruce barbecue. there's a smoking ban. the royals and ravens are both working on policies. almost feeling like baseball weather out there today, temperatures pushing 50, had a
