>> continues coverage of a family affair in the murder for hire trial against this woman, karla porter and her daughter took the stand today. porter is a ceus of arranging her husband's murder three years ago at this gas station. today she spoke to the jury describing how time after time he abused her. she explained threats and abuse were so bad she had no choice but to kill him. the state said she never reported any abuse or threats to police. porter's daughter also in the forefront. she said she helped find someone to kill her father but had a different story in court today. robert jarrod will be 89 by the time his prison sentence ends. the court sentenced him to 30 years for the murder of his then wife christine. she was killed 22 years ago and her body found buried under a shed at the family home.

the judge called it an extraordinary demonstration of coldness. the 6-year-old daughter of a researcher accused of poisoning his wife is going to stay with her grandparents here in townsend. a pennsylvania judge made the ruling to keep her with her mother's parents. she was found dead in april. her husband, university of pittsburgh researcher is jailed on charges that he poisoned her. >> tonight police are trying to figure out why a texas man went to two homes last night shooting eight people, killing four of them. the suspect may have a military background and was reportedly a former danceer at dallas mavericks games. texas police have a man in custody suspected of killing four people and wounding four others at two different locations late last night. reports identified the suspect as a man who may have a military background.

his first target the home of his ex-girlfriend. >> officers immediately responded to the scene. when they arrived they found two victims deceased and then found two more that were injured. >> reporter: the man allegedly then drove ten mile away to a home reportedly owned by his ex- wife. law enforcement officials said he threw an explosive device into the house and after it went off he went inskied shot four people. two were killed, two boys ages 11 and 13 made it. police said that the suspect pretended to be one of the victims when police arrived at the scene. he reportedly repeated his name, rank and serial number. >> the suspect was taken in to custody without incident. >> reporter: neighbors in the neighborhood said response from police was swift. >> it was with in five minutes of the bang. >> reporter: we are learning more about the suspect's background. he is a former special education teacher and police believe list former girlfriend

and estranged wife are among those dead. >> tonight the father of the man accused of killing and shooting people in a town meeting is speaking out. police say that rocky newall opened fire during a meeting in rock township pennsylvania. his father said weeks before the shooting they had a conversation, his son talked about taking care of the matter. >> it wasn't [inaudible] take his own life. >> reporter: police and his father believe he was angry because the township condemned his property, then bought it at the sheriff's sale last month. >> they pushed him to the point. i mean he -- my son done the shooting, but they pushed him to the point to where he snapped. >> the father said he warned sheriff's deputies about his son. sheriff's office said the threat was taken seriously but they believe he was planning to hurt the sheriff and his staff when they served the eviction

notice. they didn't think other town members were at risk. >> let's get you to the latest on this information about the manhunt going on for the man accused of kidnapping a san diego teen, murdering her mother and possibly killing her brother as well. multiple states are on high alert after possible sitings of the car. the children's dad is speaking out. he said that the suspect came into their lives before his daughter was born and that he considered the man a friend. now he is waiting and hoping for the safe return of his daughter. >> i believe the hardest thing is still to come when i have to go and start -- cleaning up their apartments and rooms . >> reporter: an arrest warrant has been issued. >> family and friends of one california mom are fearing the worst tonight as the search for her enters a 4th night. the 50-year-old sandra cook hasn't been seen since sunday

night. she is an investigator for the public defender's office but had been in touch with police recently after her loved dog was taken during a break-in. she put up flyers and a reward for a thousand dollars and until sunday had no leads. then. >> she told her daughter she was going out to meet someone who might have information about her dog. >> reporter: her family said she never came home. her 15-year-old daughter used her smart phone gps and found it was dumped off a highway. police also found her car two miles away. >> it rained last night. floodwaters are rising high in parts of the midwest and trapping people in their homes including a mom and her baby. rescue crews had to be called in. >> dogs rescued from terrible hoarding conditions. >> and wildfires rage in southern california.

. we have a baby rescued from high floodwaters in nashville. the little one and the mother were trapped in the rising water, crews helped get everybody to dry ground safely. >> and rains continued to hit the midwest. parts of missouri have seen 17 inches of rain since the weekend. roads washed out. there are homes that are now under water. >> get all the water out and i'm sure that the lakes are full, i mean -- i just really don't know. you can see it's a mess. >> across the midwest the heavy rains may slow down but the high water, that will take a little bit of time to run off. >> backyard james taylor, fire and rain and rain and fire. more than a hundred firefighters fighting this fire in oregon.

12 homes had to be evacuated crews have had the fire under control but expect hot spots to flair up. nobody is investigators are interviewing witnesses and reviewing video to try to find out what caused this. and then an out control wildfire in southern california. >> mike here now with details on how the fire over took more than 10,000 acres in just a few hours . >> reporter: hey. this is a bad one. imagine a wall of fire heading toward your home. it's a scene playing out now just east of los angeles. take a look. the wind whipped wildfire is raging out of control 85 miles east of los angeles. the blaze is now covering eight square miles the massive fire burned all night, destroying everything in its parent. >> when i left i was backing out and there was flame all round my car. >> reporter: home after home swallowed in fast moving flames. >> it was so bad i thought i was going to die. >> reporter: more than 1500 ordered to evacuate

>> we got out alive. >> reporter: the fast moving fire caught lisa off guard. she quickly threw her belongings into her trunk, escaping just in time only to find the blaze had cut her escape route in half. >> we couldn't go the 243, the fire had crossed over. >> reporter: officials say the wind is pushing the fire in two directions, east and west. more than 500 firefighters assisted by helicopters and planes are battling the flames, as they navigate their way up steep hills and rough terrain. at least two firefighters have been hurt. the cause of the fire still under investigation and official say the number of wildfires are down nationally this year but california is going against the trend with the number of fires up there. >> and now from abc2 maryland's most accurate forecast. >> let's start off with a look at maryland's most powerful radar and clearing out in hartford we had the rain

earlier, now a cluster of three different showers and storms, let's show you where they are headed come -- one area moving in to southern howard, starting to feel the rain. probably hearing the thunder. you see that storm coming in on the southern sky and then across further west into the edge of frederick, coming out of the station headed up into walkersville, another shower of concern. this is widely scattered activity and if you are going for instance to the big concert tonight, i think -- a pass i go shower or storm perhaps but anything should be fairly fast moving and clear the area fairly quickly. now future radar into the day tomorrow, be prepared for more pop up showers and storms, maybe more widespread basis we think for your friday afternoon. dundock, weather in motion more you. cloudy skies and then a sun break and then we get a good day and then scattered rain. now as we look at the eastern

side of the city we ebanksly the overcast sky. 84 degrees, some spots today reach that 90-degree mark. more summer like today. anywhere you are this evening or tomorrow or this weekend, you can get maryland's most power of radar with the abc2 weather app. next day planner, chances for showers throughout the day, hit and miss but the best window will come through the midafternoon hours storm and then start to taper off. temperature wise, statewide, warmer today, mid80s. humidity high, still on a south breeze that keeps cranking up the dew point numbers, 74 in annapolis, that's oppressive, humidity will increase through the day tomorrow. that will increase the chances for showers and storms like fuel for thunderstorms, high heat and humidity at the surface, when it rises up it breaks that cap you will see

scattered showers and storms, 3:00 tomorrow afternoon the boundary. it looks like it'll edge south of the state as we go beyond tomorrow evening and into the day on saturday. the big barbecue festival in belaire, i would still go but realize part of the afternoon could have scattered showers and storms. saturday looks dryer as that boundary pushes south. not by a lot, a close call. right now it'll stall down toward virginia beach and north carolina. we have maryland back in the sun for most of the weekend. let's hope that happens. coming our way, again is that frontal boundary. it'll push the steamiest of the conditions off shore we think by the time we get into the first part of the weekend. slightly dryer conditions and sunnier weather we think and less humid by late saturday and into sunday. this front ends up stalling further north things would be a little less pretty around here weather wise into the weekend. temperatures tomorrow will run hot again into the low 90-

local volunteers are stranded there, unable to get home because of it. they traveled there from habitat for humanity. helping an international chapter build a home. they are in a holding pattern now. >> the family of a howard family woman who disappeared 20 years ago has closure tonight. a man was sentenced to 30 years for the murder of his former wife christine her body was found under a shed behind the home they shared just months ago. she was last seen in 1991 and at the time robert said she went for a walk and never came back. >> and testimony continues in day three of the kar la porter murder for hire trial. she said she had to kill her husband. she said she was beaten and feared for her life. her daughter took the stand and in a video confession said she helped find someone to kill her bad but in court denied saying

that. after further questioning she started pleading the 5th. >> earlier round of showers eastern baltimore and hartford, now a secondary line out of the dc area. we will continue to watch as this secondary line of showers approaches out of the south and east. on the satellite view you can see what's going on. we had sun, warmed it up. increase the instability in the atmosphere and now as a result we are seeing the hit and miss showers and storms, temperatures now running fairly warm but where you are getting the rain in ellicott. otherwise, still warm and humid. still have to fuel more shower action and thunderstorm action in to the evening. tapering off by daybreak but then a more robust line into tomorrow afternoon. for more on the set up let's go outside. >> yeah. ugly out here right now. a lot of muggy air. big storms last night. we want to recap.

northern baltimore, on the carroll county line we saw huge storms, lot of hail, wind damage, greg jackson reporting minor degree, tammy and tawny, all reports damage last night to the north and to the west of the city. look at the widespread damage, reporting coming out of pennsylvania and ohio, we are going to anticipate the next 24, 48 hours of seeing more storms. look at that. wind damage. here is the deal. we will show you the set up. it's about the dew point numbers right now that are in to the 70s. the air is loaded up with juice. that's the fuel that will start the storms. the cold front is a slow mover moving through the ohio valley but it'll make it through by saturday. in the meantime it's all about the storms, tonight and also tomorrow. hail, lightning, a very good possibility. you can see a burst of very gusty winds around 50 miles an hour.

we will time their arrival in your neighborhood. that's coming up. >> all right. all new, we have a hoarding situation in arkansas. dogs finding refuge here. >> we were there to see how the dogs arrived how you can help >> reporter: these are some of the ten dogs that have found themselves in annapolis after a terrible life in arkansas. they may look happy now but this is how they lived not to long ago. more than 90 animals were rescued from white county arkansas. more than 50 dogs and puppies living in horrible conditions. the humane society put out a call for help and the spca was one of the four organizations in maryland that answered. >> i heard in that area the shelters in the immediate area were full and high kills, brought them back in this area where they have a better chance of adoption. >> reporter: joe went to pick the dogs up wednesday. >> a lot of them surprisingly

it includes essentials like clothing, shoes, it's a big break for us because the state officials hoping we take advantage because it helps local stores. maybe put them off for just a day. >> the key for people to understand is that it's not just back to school for their kids, it's anyone who buys any item of clothing or shoes that are less than $100 from this sunday to the following saturday. you don't have to pay the sales tax. that's 6% savings. >> darn right. earlier this week cheryl took a closer look at everything on the list. found a couple of things we had questioned about. for instance book bags don't qualify but items like departer belts and slippers do. we asked about the list and they said it's up to the state legislature to make changes it continues through august 17th but if you decide to shop this week or the next consider picking up extra
