backflips and cartwheels.mile? love, warmth. here, try this. mmmm, ok! ching! i like the fact that there's lots of different tastes going on. mmmm! breakfast i'm very impressed. this is a great cereal! honey bunches of oats. i hear you crunching.
6:34 am
all right. let's talk about what's going on right now because the last time left you, we were dealing with just severe thunderstorm warnings. the tar to ever neighedo warning for harford -- tornado warning for har forecounty expired and we are back and dealing with tore fadeo warning for -- tornado warning foresees i will county in effect until-- for cecil county in effect.
6:35 am
we are looking at reds a severe thunderstorm warning now for harford county. that's the one that was placed with -- replaced with the tornado warning. but things shifted toward the north and east. this is what we are working with. lots of flood warnings across the area and in baltimore county and points off to the north and everywhere else. so dealing with flash flood watches. so heavy rain across the area for today. and also some stormy weather and severe weather happening this morning. so let's talk about what's going on on maryland's most powerful radar as of now. because we are very active and our storm the tornado is looking right around elkton as of now. i will try to zoom in on this cell so you can see what's going on. we are dealing with a cell that is capable of producing a tornado this morning, but also we have plenty of lightning with this cell and also we are dealing with gusty winds across the area. and, we are dealing with heavy rain. so, in the next 12 minutes this is pushing off towards northeast 29 minutes elkton and
6:36 am
45 minutes newark and 48 brookside. so this is what we are dealing with this morning. again a. very dangerous storm. hopefully you are hearing my voice and have your plan of action and you are in the lowest level of your home. if you don't have a basement you are in an interior room that doesn't have windows and you want to put as much distance between you and the outside as possible. and make sure you cover your head because the biggest thing in tornadoes is the debris that flies around. and that is what can be dangerous to you. so what we are watching again the national weather service issued this tornado warning because they are seeing some type of spin in the upper atmosphere and what i want to do is zoom in and this looks confusing and cluttered but this is the velocity radar that mode that it's in and you see the reds, the reds go away from the rain dar and the greens go towards and what you want is a cuplet so i will zoom in and seeif eke find the cuplet and see what the national weather service is seeing. and there's a little bit you
6:37 am
can see the cuplet coming together around just to the south of northeast this morning. and this is where we are going to be looking. so now i am going step out and go back and try to zoom into areas for you. and let's keep you safe from the storm that's happening. we have been under the gun this morning with severe weather. harford county is out of the woods but we are talking about cecil county this morning. i am going to pull out and then i am going to put on this mode back in here for you. and we can see that the areas are looking very rain this morning we have the flash floodwarnings in effect. but the big are story is the tornado. i will see if i can see a hook with this tornado warning across the area this morning. in a hook is the signature the tbs signature that we look for to see if that's where the tornado is going to drop out of that hook. as i pan and look you can kind of see the hook to the north just to the south of northeast
6:38 am
right in this area here. and again that shows us that there could be a rotation a tornado that would drop out of the area and reach the ground. a tornado means it's eminent. rotation has been seen and at any point if it's not on the ground it could drop to the ground. that's what we are watching this morning across cecil county and northeast and elkton you are getting hammered with plenty of rain and plenty of lightning. again, you heard me talk about this morning or maybe you haven't maybe you are just tuning in and just listening now that tornados come rain racked and this is-- rain wrapped because we are getting plenty of rain across the area and we are seeing a little hook around quails nest but plenty of rain also what i am seeing as i look at the radar this morning, you can see this pinkish color here around mccan -- mechanic valley and indian
6:39 am
hills i wouldn't be surprised to see ifus dealing with hail. you can see that in the purples there this morning around union valley and also marlie village and dangerous weather that will continue. i am going to pull back out and we are going to talk about if you just tuning in right now, what we are dealing with. again, the national weather service issued a tornado warning foresees i will county and -- for cecil county going until 7:15 this morning. so we are going to be with you nonstop until this is expired maybe it will weake and the national weather service will cancel it before it goes to 7:15. as it begins to move out of the warning area. but, as of now, this is what we are working with. we have a tornado warning foresees i will county -- for cecil county. we are looking at greens and reds across the area and we will continue the severe thunderstorm warning in harford county and we have lots of
6:40 am
flood warnings. that means the flooding is eminent and is happening now and this is what we are working with in baltimore county and pointsup to the north. traveling along i-83 york is under the flash flood warning as well and this lingers until 10:30 this morning. so we have lots of active watches and warnings this morning and they will go into the afternoon at least the flash flood watch will. we are looking at areas in the lighter green. so as we go throughout the day, we are going to continue to be a little unsettled. we look at what's going on in maryland's most powerful radar as of now for today, and not only are we working with this area. this is the tornado warning. we are talking about cecil county but there's another storm cell that's popping up sliding off towards the north and east as of now. it started in carroll county and is working its way into baltimore county. we will zoom in on these areas. not only cecil county dealing with the stormy weather but we have around carroll county and baltimore county the only thing is with those areas baltimore
6:41 am
county cecil county not under a tornado warning or even a severe thunderstorm warning this morning. so, again, if you are in the areas, actually i am going put a track onto see where this is going as of now. this storm where this tornado is located is moving to the northeast at about 20 miles an hour as of now. you can see lots of lightning with the storm and we are also seeing lots of rain with the storm. so, again, in four minutes we are talking about elkton and you should have had your plans and be listening to my voice and be in the lower level of your home. 22 minutes newark and brookside and 46 minutes wilmington but by that time it's pushing out of our area heading into delaware. so, really concerned with elkton and with the 4 minute time span. you should be where you need to be at this time. the heavy rain and dangerous rain and lightning coming down
6:42 am
in neighborhoods such as meadowview park and we are looking at elk and pond's edge and we are looking at stoney chase court this morning. and again all this is pushing off towards the north and east at this time again 20 miles an hour. let me clear this for you and again you can see the neighborhoods and let me see if i could get in closer. i am pretty sure i can before i toss it over to you. i want to keep everybody safe and try to get everybody's neighborhood this morning because we are talking about a tornado warning and again, when we are looking at the pinks maybe even be dealing with hail and child is under it and heavy rain we are talking about rainionch an hour. dealing with flash flood warnings across the area. tornado warnings across the area as well. you can see around mechanic valley around turn quit if you are in that area eastwood estates and also wedgewood hills. i will try to get more information but right now i am going to send it over to you charley. >> thanks.
6:43 am
bob thomas with the harford county department of emergency services is on the phone with us right now. sir can you hear me this morning. >> i can thank you. >> all right bob thanks so much for the time. i know it's short notice. we are about 15 minutes remove from the tornado warning moving out of harford county on a northeastern path. what are you hearing in your area from damage or anything on the ground? >> i spoke with emergency manager rick ares ten minutes ago and we have unconfirmed report that a tornado was seen in the aberdeen area in the area of west bel air avenue and route 40. that's the center part of the town of aberdeen. that would have been sometime around 6:10, 6:15 this morning. right now, we have fire crews from the aberdeen fire department and adjoining companies battling a dwelling
6:44 am
fire in aberdeen not too far from where the reported tornado was cited. wie also have calls for service at the -- we also have calls for a service area outside havre de grace. our fire is service is busy in that area with storm related calls. it's raining very, very hard and heavy rain that started approximately 40 minutes ago in that part of the county. we actually issued a flash flood warning year night we are expecting at least three inches of rain or more today it canlythis morning as a result of the storm. >> right. right. now, bob, as we knew the storm was moving through from the forecasters in the past 24 hours, how did you have in terms of an opportunity and time to get ready for what could have come and apparently what has happened in your area?
6:45 am
>> our emergency management team i don't want to brag but our emergency management team does an excellent job in preparation for all kinds of weather events. and they were monitoring our weather conditions throughout the night and our offices were staffed with our personnel tracking the storm through the national weather service and at the first hint, that harford county might see tornado activity, we issued a tornado warning this morning shortly before 6 a.m. and that was rebroadcast at 6:30 this morning through a variety of media messaging. but, we are very proactive in alerting the residents in our area as to weather events that certainly may impact them. >> finally mr. thomas this morning there are a lot of people as is often the case in
6:46 am
situations like this that want to come out and they want to see some of the damage left behind. they want to see the results of the storms as they move through. if any of them can hear you this morning listening to us on good morning maryland, i am sure that's something you want to dough tract them from doing. >> now is not the time for sightseeing or to be going out to see how bad the storm is or was. we are still under the influence of a very severe weather event and we want to keep motorists and by standers away from the area where we have fire crews working. we need a period of time to allow our emergency personnel to do their job and for the weather event to clear out before the sightseeing i will call it begins. right now, it's not the time. >> once again mr. thomas i want to reiterate there's been an unconfirmed funnel cloud touching down unconfirmed near
6:47 am
aberdeen west bel air and route 40 correct? >> that's correct. and we will not receive confirmation on that until it's been reviewed examined and data analyzed by the national weather service. >> all right bob thomas of the har forecounty department of emergency services you are going to have long day ahead. we will let you get he back to it. >> thank you. >> he's reported to you on good morning maryland a number of fire crews are out on the scene in harford county responding to fires and other emergency situations there following the storm moving through. lynette is sitting by at the weather wall it moved onto cecil county. >> you are right. this is nothing to be played with this morning. whenever you get a tornado warning, this is very serious and damaging and could be life- threatening and we will stay on until this expires. we are looking at a tornado warning foresees i will county and the good news is what we are dealing with now in harford county is the severe thunderstorm warning and the tornado warning that is gone we are dealing with flash flood
6:48 am
warnings in baltimorcounty and also harford county but we still do have the tornado warning and this is our focus this morning in cecil county and this is in effect until 7:15 this morning. so you should have your plan of action you should be in the lowest level of your home as of now and if you don't have abasement you need to go to an interior room. put enough walls between you and the outside and cover your head because that's where all the damage comes in tornado with everything flying around. as we look at maryland's most powerful radar as of now, we are seeing lots of lightning on this cell right here and this is the cell that is capable of producing that tornado. the national weather service has seen some rotation in this cell and that's why they issued the tornado warning across the area this morning in cecil county. we can zoom in and where we are looking at the lightning the heavy rain coming down, it could be in your neighborhood right now. we are talking about elkton and child and also around sycamore
6:49 am
farms this morning northeast you are on the tail end of it but you are still dealing with the strong thunderstorm across the area this tornado warning that's happening in cecil county this morning as well. and we are looking at bayview. and the only thing that we are going to hope for is that this may be expires before the time. but if not, we are still going to be dealing with this severe weather that we are going to possibly get as we go into the afternoon. so this is around one we could see another round as we go into the afternoon. we look at maryland's most powerful radar and we switch the mode a little bit for you. this is the velocity mode and we look at the greens and look at the reds and the reds are going away from the radar and the greens are going towards the radar and what we want to see here is if they meet up. if we cank see a cuplet. we can kind of see that around elkton and around northeast this morning. that's where you are seeing a little bit of rotation across the area. so, again, i am going to step out and show you what's going
6:50 am
on. let's see if we get a tornado vortech signature we like to look for as forecasters as meteorologists to see if we can see where the hook is. i am going -- shall where the hook s i am going to switch back to the mode that's more familiar with you and zoom out so you can get a better perspective of what's going on. and then we can see as we zoom back in what's going on across the area. and you can see lots of cloud to ground lightning with this cell. also, if i zoom in a little bit more, around the arbosh park area to the east of child now we look at the pinks here. this could be a hail core we are seeing and we could see hail with this cell as well. this is around meadowview park. if that's your neighborhood or you are close to that, you could be seeing hail coming down across the area as well as plenty of lightning and as well as plenty of rain. so once this store neighed -- tornado warning expires you will be left with rain.
6:51 am
we are talking about 3 inches of rain and we are talking about that this morning. as we go into the afternoon we could see another round of it. we are on saturated ground from all the rain that is we saw the beginning of summer and even before that. still well over. but this is what we are dealing with right now around meadowview and palm springs manner and still heavy rain and we are looking at the reds around he will balington but this is -- elkton but this is pushing off to the north and east very slowly but it's pushing off to the north and east at 20 miles an hour. i am going to zoom back out so you can see what's going on again. so again, the tornado warning is around cecil county this morning. it's in cecil county rather. but, as we lack back off towards the west -- look back off towards the west there's another storm developing. it looks like training with these because we are going to see more showers and thunderstorms continue throughout the day over areas that got hit already.
6:52 am
so we are looking right now in baltimore county northern baltimore county and you got hit hard this morning and that's why a flash flood warning has been issued for baltimore county until 10:30 this morning. so in freeland, you are not under a tornado warning in baltimore county but you are still dealing with plenty of rain and you can see that happening around gore's mill and walker manner and -- manor and parkton as we have thunderstorms. gusty winds around pretty boy garth this morning and hollands land and shane valley is under this as well. again, the funnel cloud that basically sparked this or the tornado that we saw earlier started in harford county. and again a citizen's report for the funnel cloud was route 40 and bel air avenue and we are talking about aberdeen and harford reported earlier. harford county is okay right now. except for plenty of rain that
6:53 am
we are seeing flash flooding across the area. but all in all, we are looking at this tornado warning that is happening now in cecil county. so i am going to go back and recap for you if you are just joining thus morning, we are under a tornado warning. and that's for the area here shaded in the pinning color. and -- pink color. and that is cecil county this morning. some very dangerous weather happening across the area and this will continue to push off towards the north and east at about 20 miles an hour. not only are we dealing with the tornado warning, the rotation of the upper levels of the at moss for but we are dealing arew cloud to ground lightning and heavy rain with the cell. so we are talking about three inches being put down this morning. and as we go into the afternoon we could be doing it all over again. going to try to zoom into the area again because we are going to be dealing with plenty of rain plenty of dangerous weather and it's slowly but surely trying to move out of
6:54 am
the area heading off towards delaware but we still have neighborhoods under the gun. again with the tornado warning, we are talking about childs and elkton and sycamore farms and also we will continue to push this off towards the north and east but in the meantime, hopefully you are hearing the sound of my voice and you are in your safe place because we are talking about a serious thing that's happening this morning with the tornado warning until 7:15 foresees i will county. i am get more -- for cecil county i will get more information. >> we will stay on the air through the beginning of good morning america. because this is a very serious situation we are dealing with. already we have heard from bob thomas in harford county with the department of emergency services there. and unconfirmed tornado touchdown -- touched down near aberdeen. a populated area and he says a number of crews are out responding this morning to the response as possibly the result of this weather event going on. that tornado warning in harford county expired about half an hour ago. but richard brooks of cecil
6:55 am
county their department of emergency services is on the phone right now. richard being you guys are in the throws of a warning -- you guys are in the throws of a warning right now how are things looking. >> we harford county did a great job this morning with the warning sirens which is part of the excellent network were sounded by harford county this morning after 6 when that tornado warning went active there. that got us moving and we notified our volunteer fire department companies of the impending weather. we got the special media up and booming and you will see it active. we are taking the precautions for the citizens that are up this morning due to the changing weather conditions that they can take whatever recautions they need to secure their families and themselves. >> that is wait and see event for us because you can't respond until after an event occurs with what's happened in aberdeen and they are responding to that asyour crews are waiting i am sure they are
6:56 am
batoning down the hatches to see where help is needed right? >> well, that's exactly right. you know, the key is to get the resources in place so we canrespond as needed. the other part is that is preparation and awareness. everyone has seen the changed weather patterns in this part of the country and now the commonplace we are seeing tornado watches and warnings. and it's a public education component for us because this is rare so they are not caught off guard on a morning like this. >> if anyone can hear us someone maybe has their television on or might not know what to do, what steps would you offer to them right now to put themselves and their families in the safest place possible? >> well you covered that well this morning. you know, your broadcast is as soon as the warning goes active it's time to go to the lowest part of the home. shelter with your family and account for everyone in the home if they don't have a
6:57 am
downstairs go to the center core of the house and obviously maintain situational awareness with a battery operated radio. >> quickly as we talked about with bob thomas your counter part in harford county ople may want to get a photograph or something like this come-- something like this or come and see the event. weather is an amazing thing to watch when you have the opportunity to see it but you would probably discourage those in cecil couldn't fry from taking that-- county from taking that step. >> i discourage that. you don't want that tonight last thong you do. so we-- thing you do. so we say sek protection maintain that security -- self- protection and maintain the security and save the cell phones for later you may need it in a emergency. >> richard brook with the cecil department of emergency service is live on the phone thanks for that time today sir. you be safe as you hunker down and wait for what is to come the tornado warning in place over parts of cecil county. we are just 14 minutes away, 14
6:58 am
minutes 30 seconds from that expiration 7:15. lynette is that the time for the expiration? >> it is. it looks like it will expire at that time. looks like it's beginning topush into delaware. >> you are getting the most recent information. >> exactly. >> this is the radar she has been working through. you see the massive size of the cell up across delaware into pens hammered with this as is york. but this is what's-- pennsylvania getting hammered with this as is york. you can always have this information in the palm of your hand by getting the storm shield app. this is something that you know a lot of times we talk about the apps you can get this one works and it works for the benefit of you and your family. you can get the most accurate forecast and you can see the radar we are showing you right now. these maps and everything so if you in your safe zone in your house as the storm is going on you can have the storm shield
6:59 am
app in your palm at the ready letting you know what's going on as the updates come in they go straight to your phone to your current location. letting you know if you are in harm's way or if you are in the all clear. lynette is over at the wall right now and lynette, cecil county is by no means all clear yet. >> you are right charley. we are not clear as of yet but it's going to happen and that's some good news many but in the meantime, still here. still on and we will keep you safe from the storm. this is a doocy this morning-- doocy this morning. we saw a -- doozy this morning. we saw a funnel cloud that expired but this pushed off to the north and east and we are focused in cecil county. this tornado warning is set to expire at 7:15. in the meantime, yes, being distracted by lots of lightning across the area. try to zoom into neighborhoods really tightly here and we can see it around elkton heights so fa you are in this area, maybe
