now, as for friends and family of the couple, 21-year-old william monroe and 22-year-old megan carey, this makes the loss even worse. more than 150 of them gathered outside of the victim's home on south carey street last night. police say that mason threatened them as early as friday and they say they even called police. police say mason broke into the home on tuesday morning, shooting monroe's mother and a family friend before killing monroe and carrigan who were in a back bedroom with their 16- month-old child. police say mason would have shot the baby but the gun wouldn't shoot. they say the couple is good people and it's beyond tragic. >> when i heard it, i busted out crying. i can't imagine what their 17- month-old child, you know, th're going to be without a mother and father, and it's very sad. >> seeing all these people lets me know they were very well loved and they had good friends.

>>reporter: looking into the family's claim and filed a -- that they filed a report against mason. meanwhile, individuals say they will all try to help raise the 17-month-old who's now without her parents. reporting live in downtown baltimore, roselle leftwich, abc 2 eyewitness news. a victim was found along bayside beach road during rush hour. detectives are also looking for the driver who may have killed her. evidence around the body led police to believe that this woman may have been the victim of a hit and run. and we do have a picture of what police believe is the car that looks like it hit her. now, if you have any information in the case, police would like to hear from you. the number to call is 866-7- lockup. bradley manning could have faced 90 years behind bars but instead a judge sentenced him to 35. manning was also demoted from army private first class to just private. the convicted whistleblower leaked hundreds of thousands of classified documents to the website wikileaks.

manning will get credit for more than 3 1/2 years that he has already served, that combined with good behavior means that bradley manning could be eligible for parole in as little as seven years. manning's lawyers are now planning to ask for presidential pardon. sports now, a much needed win for the baltimore orioles and a much needed day off before beginning another key series this weekend with the oakland a's. baltimore beat tampa last night 4-2 to avoid that home sweep. adam jones and chris davis each had home runs on the night. for davis that is number 46, tying him for third most in the history of all oriole hitters. they remain five games out of a east, but they do improve to just three games out in the wildcard race. well, here's the logo the o's are hoping to paint on the field again come this october, it'll be for the post-season. tomorrow the o's will begin mailing out invoices to post- season tickets to all season ticketholders. with that invoice you can guarantee seats for all 11 possible home games for the o's. the deadline for those orders will be september the 6th.

and coming up tonight the ravens take the field at m and t bank stadium for preseason game number three. that's typically the game where the starters see the most action. the ravens are 2-0 so far in the preseason, but the starters have struggled. tonight ravens face the carolina panthers and that game will be on espn. kickoff is set for 8:00, so what will the weather be like down at the bank as fans make their way down for a game with the ravens? lynette is standing by with the forecast. >> all right, charley, yes, the potential for a few showers and storms out there, but scattered in nature and most likely they will get that game in. the satellite and radar not picking up on a whole lot now, but we did see some nasty showers and thunderstorms work their way across the area last night. right now we're pretty much dry. but as we go throughout the day, we will get some sunshine in here and that's just going to aid in the instability so that's why we do have the potential for more showers and storms to pop up this afternoon. the dewpoints, oh, yes, they are up there, the measure of the moisture in the air in the 70s, so we are definitely feeling a little bit on the oppressive side for today just

we're about 20 minutes away from 5:00. and the latest this morning on the crisis in egypt. there's new information on the country's former leader. the prime minister for egypt has ordered the release of former president hosni mubarak after being dwayneed for close to two -- detained for close to two year. he will be on house arrest as a condition of that release. however, the move could likely increase tensions in the deeply divided country. it was under mubarak's rule that gave rise to the 2011 arab spring and led to the ouster of that long-time president. what followed was the country's first democratly-held election and morsi from the muslim brotherhood and a year after that egypt is once again spiraling out of control. many analysts now fear mubarak's release could amplify islamist allegations that last month's military coup was a

step of restoring the old regime. there is concern in syria of chemical weapons by the government there. bashar alasaid's rejet stream used toxic gas to kill 130 people that killed children as they slept. the syrian government denies the weapons, calling the allegations "absolutely baseless." this morning the united states, britain and france are demanding that a team of u.n. experts already in syria investigate the claims into the attack. taking a look at the other stories making headlines around the nation this morning, we're hearing the chilling 911 calls made from inside an atlanta- area elementary school where a gunman opened fire. police say michael brandon hill entered ronald e. mcnair discovery learning academy armed with an ak-47 rifle and about 500 rounds of ammunition. he fired at least one shot inside the school and one outside -- and went outside to exchange gunfire with approaching police officers. that's when the bookkeeper there, antoinette tuff called 91 now listen closely. you can hear gunshots in the

background. >> stay on the line with me now. where are you? >> i'm in the front office. oh, he just went outside and started shooting. >> can you get somewhere safe? >> yeah. i gotta go. he don't see me. >> put the phone down. >> when hill reentered the school, he didn't get any further than the front office and that's because tuff actually managed to talk him into surrendering. luckily no one was hurt in that shooting and hill is now in custody facing a handful of charges. in other news, u.p.s. is cutting 15,000 workers' spouses from an insurance rolls, citing the president's new healthcare for the decision. in a memo to employees, u.p.s. says it will discontinue coverage of husbands and wives eligible for insurance with their own employers. the company says it expects healthcare costs to go up by more than 11% next year. u.p.s. is blaming several aspects of

obamacare for the cost increase, including its requirement that dependent children be covered after the age of 26. today civil rights groups will begin their journey visiting places of historical meaning to the civil rights movement. the tour will start in birmingham, alabama and end in washington d.c. on saturday. there the group will hold a rally and a march at the lincoln memorial and then go to martin king -- martin luther king, jr. national memorial. it's all in honor of the 50th anniversary of the march on washington. today president barack obama will kick off a two-day bus tour through new york and pennsylvania. the president is expected to discuss new ideas for lowering the cost of college tuition. the president is scheduled to speak at three colleges and one high school. vice president joe biden is expected to join the president during his stop in scranton, pennsylvania. that stop is scheduled for tomorrow. thousands of buildings near yosemite national park are being threatened as a number of wildfires continue to burn out west. the fire dubbed the rim fire is nearly out of control. it has already destroyed five buildings and forced the evacuation of camps and private homes. so far the fire is only 5%

contained. more than 400 firefighters are working around the clock to contain this fire along with water-dropping planes. and the thunderstorms will continue as we go through today, scattered in nature. we're talking about it as we go toward the afternoon. the satellite and radar not picking up on a whole lot this morning. we do have one nasty thunderstorm offshore as of now and one in harrisburg, but around maryland we're pretty much drying things out and that might not necessarily be a good thing, especially if we do see some sunshine today which we will. that is definitely going to aid in the thunderstorms popping up as we go into the afternoon. it's 74 degrees right now in glen burnie and 69 in mount airy. churchville coming in at 73 degrees and along the eastern shore in easton this morning we're at 70. so you can see these temperatures are on the warm side and we're also very humid out there. so we do have a case of the muggies once again. so as you step out and about for today, make sure you do have lots of water on tap. this is what's going on at the surface as we do have a front

young boy from carroll county drowned. nathan baker was just 5 years old and abc 2's preston mitchum explains how preston's family is keeping his name alive. >>reporter: monkey bars, flying board, balance beam, what kid doesn't like a playground? >> he was always out on that playground, on his rope swing, swinging, and i can remember him telling me, you know, dad, swing me, higher, higher, higher. >>reporter: the he dad is referring to is his son nate, nathan chris baker, an energetic, fun-loving kid. >> he was very adventurous and just so much fun to be around. >>reporter: a dad gets choked remembering a year ago the family wanted to surprise nate with a trip to the family it lake house. that's when fun times turned tragic. >> i went over to the water on the dock and looked down and i didn't see him and i noticed that his life jacket and his swim shoes were on the dock. >>reporter: this fun-loving

seven minutes away from 5:00 right now. today two teenagers involveed in a serious car crash are holding a blood drive. this is their way of showing gratitude for those who have helped save their lives. you see, josh wilson and brandon wienhold were driving home from a fallston high school basketball game when a pick-up truck -- well, a man driving a pick-up truck ran a stop sign and smashed into their car. wilson suffered major injuries, including a broken pelvis and brain injury. he needed about 15 units of blood and spent 17 days in the hospital. so today's blood drive goes from 2:00 until it 8:00. it's happening at the fallston fire hall on cars mill road. wilson and wienhold hope to

meet every emt who had a hand in caring for them. starting today retrofit baltimore is issuing a challenge to neighborhoods to lower their energy bills. a certified energy auditor will do a variety of tests like using thermal cameras and smoke sticks to find leaks. the owner will then provide a report on what needs to be done to lower that homeowner's energy bill. any homeowner is welcome to take part in the challenge. the maryland state fair officially opens tomorrow, but today you can actually get a sneak peek at all the fun. m and t dollar preview night starts at 5:00 tonight. admissions and rides cost just a buck and the fair runs all the way until august 23rd, through labor day, so you have some time. this year's musical acts include carly ray scwrepson, fallout boy and three days grace. the kickoff starts today with dollar day. city officials want to hear your thoughts on ture of b and the aquatics programs. a series of community meetings are planned to get input on the department of recreation and park's plans to upgrade current

>> not a whole lot right now. we calmed things down, but that's not going to be the ca as we go throughout your day and that's because we have the potential for scoirs for us. as you look -- scattered showers for us. as we look at maryland's most powerful radar, it's pretty dry right now. if you're traveling along i-83 this morning, definitely going to run into a thunderstorm there around harrisburg. we are looking at it around the linklestown area, also some small hail and gusty winds up to 40 miles an hour. around dun kenon as well, just to the north of glendale. that's where you'll be running into some nasty weather. but here in maryland right now we're looking pretty good. as we look at the temperature, coming in at 71 degrees in davidsonville. yes, that's bonch after -- that's above average. we have the muggies out there, the dewpoints 69, chose to 70. not feeling good at all. you'll probably have to blast that a.c. as you head off to work or school. colombia is coming in at 69 degrees. as we look at what's going on in our last stop this morning in monday rovia, that
