the doctor. the diagnosis prostate cancer. it's terminal but pops has more immediate concerns than that. >> what happens when the paycheck ends. >> reporter: he will find out soon enough. doctors at the university of maryland center began treating pops. hospitals can treat and get reimbursed by the state. still, pops no longer has any income. he does have a rent payment, power bill and now prescriptions to buy with no insurance. coworkers helped him ally for medical assistance and social security benefits. there's a five-month waiting people. >> i said how is that possible and she said you have to wait your turn like everybody else. >> reporter: in pops case, the delay could lead to the loss of

his home. >> i'm not sure how much longer he will be able to stay at the place he can stay without paying rent. it's like the system wants him to be homeless and on the street before this happens. >> reporter: that's why they've been collecting donations online along whether the jiffy lube in pikesville and hope in the future exception may be made so disability payments can come in time. >> officials with the maryland hospital association said if the affordable care act, better known as president obama care works as intended, that number of insured in maryland, 800,000, should go down. friends of charles wilkses is setting up a facebook page.

>> we are in columbia, business park center. the tents are set up where cyclists will come in. they will cycle for 24 hours. some of them will be on the bike for just that long. we were in the tent. it's called the wall of hope. it's where cyclists are able to come am and honor their loved ones, the reason they're doing the event, in honor of jessica. look right here, jessica herself, a cancer survivor, someone who was diagnosed at a young age of 26. tell us briefly about your fight for the past four years. >> basically i was diagnosed before my 24th birthday with a rather form of cancer. within a couple of months i was in end stage and need lifesaving

liver transplant which i did receive in march of 2011. >> so you received that and been healthy etch ver since. in fact, three of them. >> this is my third time in bootyville and i'm really looking forward to it. the only cancer fund for young adults who's significant and integral in me becoming active and getting involved in 24 hours of booty. they help me run races, run triathlons. >> the ulman cancer fund, $200,000 has been raised. when you're diagnosed it's enough of a shock. how did this help you get on your feet? >>hat i needed, i needed help with a patient navigator, someone who could help me navigate the services that were available. treatment, clinical trials. we needed help with transportation to and from

on your car? how to get out and the experts who say your floor mat could save your life. good evening. diane has the evening off. we do begin with that part of the great national park burning tonight. the wildfire racing into yosemite. growing a a break neck pace and just look tonight, firefighters right there on the front linds, part of the forest up in flames tonight. look at this, another view from the sky. the national guard lifting water from a nearby lake and dropping it from the air to dry to douse the flames. one more image of the scope tonight, a wall of smoke filling the sky and word this evening that that smoke now setting off a red alert for air quality. 150 miles away in reno. our team is live inside the fire zone again tonight and abc's neal karlinsky leading us off.

>> reporter: a view of the air from above a fire that is now so big and so fast-moving veteran pilots are stunned by the sight. >> that is unreal. >> reporter: from the cockpit, look closely, that speck is a spotter plane, it unleashes some smoke to mark the target, seconds later that's where pilots drop their flame retardant. >> ready? drop. >> reporter: the land is torching wh extreme fire behavior. you can clearly see trees ignite and be stwalyed up in second. the park, bigger than the statement of vermont is only being touched by fire on the west side right now. >> i got to know what people are. >> reporter: we got up with hot spot fire teams concerned about conditions. >> you guys got to -- [ bleep ]. >> if you guys pull out, i have

to know. >> absolutely. >> your job is here is hold the line. >> exactly. >> are you surprised the behavior of this fire? >> never seen a fire move this fast. in different directions. >> reporter: along the other front lines, homes with views of the fire burning straight at them. teams of firefighters are actually sleeping here now. >> i just hope to god that it doesn't get past this point. i hope it doesn't burn any of these houses on this side. >> reporter: back out here live, this is an area the fire just burned through. you get a sense of the devastation. there are still hot spots here. the fire is burning on two fronts right now, one near yosemi yosemite, the other near homes and there's very little containment on either. >> just a stunning scene. neil, thank you. the extreme weather also the story some 1,100 miles east of there in colorado this evening. something we never thought we'd see. look at this. is it really a summer storm? sag
