of choice. >> thefts and burglaries jumped, and heroin overdoses more than doubled. sarah nicole cook and her boyfriend is another sign of the disturbing trend in which heroin is the culprit. they stole copper from air conditioning units, but wouldn't get far. police discovered their car. >> i don't see another reason they would drive down this dirt yard other than have privacy. they were busted with heroin, and why else would they come down here and sell $40 worth of copper. they were passed out in the middle of the street. >>reporter: police say putting stricter control on prescription drugs is making

event was a trash can. they're searching for the suspect. one of the air traffic controllers was injured yesterday during a lightning strike. officials confirmed the air traffic control tower was hit during the severe thunderstorm yesterday afternoon, and they now say that a traffic management coordinator who was turning on some equipment was shocked. that worker was taken to the hospital, and according to the faa was not seriously injured. new developments tonight in the massive new jersey fire we first brought you last night as breaking news. wendy has more on the fall out for business owners. it's now being treated as suspicious. >> new jersey governor with hugs and support, consoling business own whores lost everything in a massive fire that destroyed four blocks of the new jersey boardwalk. the flames consumed many

watch as these three middle schoolers walk down the sidewalk to school. suddenly out of no where this suv jumps the curb. the moment of impact too horrifying to show, the victims flying into the air as her friends watch in horror. >> i took one step and got in a crash. >>reporter: according to one witness, bystanders quickly rushed to lift the suv off two girls pinned underneath. >> it was really disturbing. it was children. >>reporter: this man was walking his dad who he saw out of control driver plow into the girls and quickly jumped into action. >> we listed it so we could get the girls out. >>reporter: several others are credited as here rows, freeing the girls within minutes,

alive, but suffering serious injuries. >> i can't even describe what i saw. >>reporter: five children were injured in the accident, includg this 11-year-old boy. >> i was trying to run away, but the car hit me. >>reporter: officials believe the driver accidentally hit the gas pedal when he intended to hit the brake. the driver passed a breathalyzer test and is not expected to face criminal charges. >> of those five kids four were girls and one a boy. they were all hurt in the crash. there are reports that two of the kids had broken legs. a two-year-old falls into an old well in the middle of a football field and a man jumps to save her and ends up in trouble as well. both were lifted out to safety. there are usually cones around the well, but they weren't there when the child fell in this time. tornado sirens were wailing in wisconsin as this video of a

waterspout was shot. they searched for debris in the water and didn't find any. there is no shortage of debris in colorado tonight. it was another day of heavy rain and record setting downpours there. brandy has the latest on the floods and thousands forced to evacuate overnight. >>reporter: much of the eastern rockies is feeling the after effects of days of deluge. river and creek banks are spilling over with thousands forced to evacuate. rescue operations have been repeated over and over again. >> we got a call that there was a wall of water coming out, so we went outside and climbed above our house and heard a big roar. it buried his house and filled

his bedroom full of mud. >>reporter: miles and miles of flooded countryside are clearly visible, yet hampered by nearly impassable roads. homes and workplace eds are under water with all traffic turned away to already stressed areas. more than 15 inches of rain fell in a matter of days, about half of what normally falls during an entire year. many were stranded as roads are impassable. >> there's no other word than catastrophic. >>reporter: muddy water has started to recede, but officials warn it's still dangerous. you can see how fast the floodwaters continue to move. more rain is expected through

morning while everyone was sleeping so he could be with us and share in the family life afterwards. >>reporter: they were riding on butler road along the side of the road where cyclists are a familiar sight. it was a typical afternoon ride when a van came up behind him. >> a woman was driving said she saw larry and his friend, said she saw them when coming up behind them. she doesn't know what happened. >>reporter: larry was killed, joe critically injured. the only thing anyone can determine is there was not adequate space given to the cyclist eds on the road. larry's ride didn't stop that day. since 2010 his friends and family celebrate his life with larry's ride to increase awareness of bike safety. in many case drivers don't understand the rights of cyclists on the road at all. >> it's so important that we share the road.
