painkillers finds addicts turning to the drug as their drug of choice. >>reporter: somehow thieves found their way here to steal copper from large air conditioning units a mile and a half from the nearest paved road. >> i think they came down this road because they were looking for a place too shoot up and saw the opportunity to steal the copper is all i could figure. i came home from camping, and there was a mess. the gas was shooting out of the gas tank. >>reporter: police arrest had a 22-year-old, sarah nicole cook and her boyfriend, eduardo espinoza junior with a car full of copper, cutting tools and supply of heroin. >> we found out that they were actually passed out in the middle of the road. >>reporter: the sheriff's office says burglaries and

thefts climbed 300% and heroin overdoses more than doubled as the narcotic made a comeback in the region. >> the declining cost of heroin has now made it a drug of choice. with law enforcement partnering with the local health officials and physicians to tighten down on controls for prescription drug abuse, it's now making heroin a greater interest to drug off fenders. >>reporter: 75% of all the county thefts can be tied directly to funding drug habits, and a new potentially deadly form of heroin heavily cut with other awe stances has become more available and less expensive than painkillers. criminals stop at nothing to get their next high. so we topped it off with sticky summer weather all week. do we get to keep the fall

coming up. tonight we know more about the person hurt yesterday when a bolt of lightning landed at bwi. the traffic management coordinator was turning on some equipment and was shocked when the electricity traveled through the tower. the worker was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. the baltimore sheriff's office says a small device blew the lid off a trash can at the courthouse yesterday. we're told the device went off about 2:30 in front of the mitchell courthouse downtown. witnesses say it sounded like a shotgun, and then they saw smoke coming from the trash can. investigators are reviewing surveillance videos, trying to find out exactly what the device was made of, but it's suspected to be a fire work. don harrison talked with officers about the murders and how they found their suspect.

>>reporter: they were found dead in their apartments in laurel. still alive was tina's severely disabled daughter. police say the 25-year-old daughter witnessed this horrible crime, but because of her disabilities was unable to communicate the events to police. a man was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder. police found a suspect with some routine police work. >> he was arrested yesterday on a traffic stop and taken into custody without incident. >>reporter: police say dna evidence tied him to the crime scene. detectives recovered multiple murder weapons from the scene, including households items and a knife. >>reporter: there's evidence that he tried to clean up after the murder. surveillance video has him

coming and going. residents are grateful the police have a man in custody. >> great relief they've caught the guy. >> there's a sense of satisfaction when you solve a case like this and detectives put a lot of hard work in this case. >> i hope that justice does him right. my prayers go out to the family. abc continues to stay on top of the controversy surrounding ecoatms that pay quick cash for old electronics. a state delegate says without statewide delegation a local ban would be ineffective.

thieves could drive to the suburbs and cash in on your stolen phones. >> i think it's an enticement where people see that it's easy to do. >> the number of stolen phones dropped off of their machines is less than 1%. they say the kiosk process of checking your license, scanning thumb prints and taking pictures deters thieves from using the machines. new jersey promises to rebuild its boardwalk. the fire that destroyed dozens of businesses. tonight theories on how it started. startling new numbers tonight about the cause. we'll have the detailed forecast next.

economics. >> you have to go to college to get ahead. at the same time it's not as if new colleges are opening up. we have a fixed amount of supply, and when demand is going up and supply isn't, prices rise. >> americans with a college education are more likely to be employed and earn more money, but in this economy, more than 36% of recent grads hold a job that doesn't require a degree. the next series of i phones will have a lot of new features and a fingerprint unlocking device. is that safe? >>reporter: among all the headlines about the new i phones, a lot of people miss what could end up being the most significant change coming to the i phone, a fingerprint

scanner. the 5s will have a home button with a fingerprint scanner inside. it will read your finger as you press the button, eliminating the need to enter a pass code. that's not really new. some laptops have used them for 10 years. are you creeped out? apple says there is no need to be concerned. does will be stored nounal your phone and will not be saved by apple or anywhere else. it is much more secure than a four digit pass code which is often easy to get. the move will dramatically change smart phone and tablet security because fingerprint scanning goes mainstream and you can expect it more in the coming years.

such a beautiful day. might as well start you off with pictures. how about the beach? a tropical disturbance is offshore. the waves kind of start to pick up here. right at the end a few more waves coming in at the beach. it was clouds early, then sunshine dominating most of the afternoon. a few fairweather clouds. look at this beautiful postcard shot in the northern part of the county. if you look closely, a few patches of fall color. that's going to look right in place as we check out the temperatures for your saturday and even into sunday morning. winds from the northwest at 16 still cranking. an outstanding day to get a little golfing in. temperatures slow to warm. we'll be up to maybe 70 two-by- four:00 around the immediate baltimore area.

settling in. we'll markup sunday afternoon until brilliant blue skies. just a few passing clouds, although the really active weather staying offshore. we were talking about this a minute ago. gabrielle, what's left of her out there, the secondary low pressure with the trailing cool front that came through yesterday and sparked the robust thunderstorms, all that action offshore, so there's a lot of active wedge ever over atlantic. temperatures tomorrow going to struggle to climb into the low 70s, even tomorrow night cooler air across baltimore and the region. overall it stays crisp as we take a look at central maryland. the numbers likely to fall down to the 40s in many spots. out in the mountains cooler than that with the numbers likely falling into the 30s. here's the setup on the weekend. a crisp day, mostly 60s

neighbors wading through was waist-high water. the national guard, charging to the rescue at this hour. family members, so many of them, this mother and daughter, comforting one another. and just listen to this raging river. you could see it there, eating away at the roadway, surrounding a home. and this scene being repeated across colorado. and tonight, the story behind the driver caught in the car on the right-hand corner of your screen. his rescue, playing out on television. the only air he could breathe, from an air pocket inside his car. and tonight, there are dozens of people unaccounted for and the flood warnings and watches remain in effect. abc meteorologist ginger zee, right there tonight in the flood zone for us. ginger? >> reporter: david, check this out. this is, or was, a street. and i want to give you a wider perspective so you can see what's happening now. it is now a ring river, coming right through this neighborhood, in boulder. just one of the communities in colorado, terrorized by these floods.

rescued, but raw. >> we lost our home. >> reporter: northern colorado, struggling tonight. whole towns cut off by the rushing waters. families stranded. the national guard evacuating more than 300 people from their homes. in estes park, those who were trapped zip lined to safety. barely skimming the deadly waters. flash flooding consuming neighborhoods whole. >> what you're about to see is tote it will crazy. >> reporter: rivers where there should be lawns, streets, parks. look at this video, shot from inside a fire truck in longmont. the water up and over the windshield. the waters gnawing away at highways. more than a year's worth of rain falling in less than three days. that's boulder creek, raging at 120 times its normal rate.

in big thompson canyon, this man bravely facing the rushing water, opening the flood gate. for some, escape near impossible, as water and mud surged into homes. this man rescued from his own bedroom. >> we heard a big roar and i think that's probably when it came down. buried his house. filled his bedroom full of mud. >> reporter: others, not as lucky. at least four dead and 80 unaccounted for. certainly still dangerous and not over. look at right behind me. that's a backyard. the waters rolling through, and there's more rain on the way. let me show you the flood watches and warnings. and the forecast including one to two inches for just north of denver and two-plus in that red area in new mexico. david? >> it is not letting up. ginger, thank you. and this storm being called 1,000-year storm by many. and you won't get an argument on that, from that driver rescued that i mentioned just a moment ago. as so many watched it unfold live on tv. tonight, we hear from him,
