completed by state police. for firearms purchases they made months ago. so the state police are bringing in as much help as they can to try to clear up the backlog. officeers from four other state law enforcement agencies will be brought in to help with this massive backlog of gun applications to try to clear them up. number of gun purchases quadrupled over the past year maryland toughened gun laws. state police from 20 officers transit and national resource and state capital police will be brought in to help. governor o'malley pledged allapplication will be approved before changes in the state law take effect on october 1st. critics say by using organizations other than the state police to do the checks the confidential information could be compromised something the state police flat out dismiss as the october 1st deadline for the fire and safety act is when it will take effect. the new law will improve requirements for background checks which include

fingerprinting. reporting live in columbia, roosevelt leftwich abc2 news. anne arundel county police are investigating the murder of a 25-year-old man shot and killed in glen burnie. his name is matthew pinkerton and police say he shot kendall green. green was found dead on his front porch. of his home sunday morning and the two men knew each other but the motive is unclear. anyone with details is asked to contact the police as soon as possible. a growing movement is in howard county to get the schools to start after 8 in the morning. the group behind the push is called the howard county start school late group. and they say teens and kids are sleep deprived and will function better when they have at least 8 1/2 hours of sleep. so the group is planning to hold a meeting tomorrow morning inside the congrewent council building in columbia. if you are curious it goes from7:30 to 9:30 and they will have coffee. tomorrow we are going learn more about the baltimore book

mountains rushing right through here. it cuts right through pouboulde. this creek is usually so calm at about two feet deep that kids are playing in it this time of year. this is more than 800 cubic feet of water rushing through here per minute. heavy rains have been in the area for seven days. more than 18 inches of rain have fallen. yesterday, the water so high, so bad, so much rain and fog they couldn't continue the helicopter rescues that are so necessary. there are hundreds of people missing here in boulder county and hundreds more missing in lam irk rer county. >> god, it went through there. >> reporter: this area is twice the size of the state of rhode island. all underwater. >> how can we ever recover from this? i know exactly. inch by inch.
