christianity and judaism, and turn a blind eye to islam. and now, a group of muslim families wants to try to get the montgomery county school district to change school calendars to observe two holidays. back in 2005, the maryland state board of education took up a very similar issue and ruled against observing muslim holidays. montgomery county school district released a statement saying in part, quote, state law makes it clear that we cannot close schools for religious purposes but only for operational reasons for things like high absenteeism and among staff and among students. well, 11 maryland schools are in the 2013 national blue ribbon designation. the schools awarded that des ition nase are chadwick and charlesmont elementary both located in baltimore county. and howard county middle schools got the designation. a full list on our web site at abc 2 news .com. and the schools earn the blue ribbon for the highest performers for state

well bill nye, the science guy, will he dance again? he suffered a knee injury during a "dancing with the stars" performance monday night. the show's producers say he is thinking of medical attention right now. and one report says he is having surgery. he emerged as a clear fan favorite despite the low scores. and video of nye's premiere night cha cha with a slowly 14 points, gone viral, and that clip has 3 million hits on youtube, the most of any dance in the competition history. for bill nye? huh. and kermit the frog will be at the smithsonian national museum of american history with miss piggy. it is the puppets that are donated to the museum by the

good morning, everyone. and happy hump day to you. owings mills temperature coming in at 47 degrees. and yes, we are below once again where we should be for this time of the year and also we have some patchy fog across the area. so take it easy as you step out and about this morning. and give yourself enough time on the roadways. you don't want to run into the fog. edgewood, the temperature at 49, and the winds out of the northwest at 4 miles an hour. and we will have the winds out of the north and northeast as we go throughout the day at 5- 10 miles an hour. and in stevensville this morning, the temperature is at 56 degrees and the dew point at 49. and this dew point, it is a number that you want to see, so 49, that mean has we're dealing with some dry air, so even with the clouds that are beginning to move in across the area, no rain will fall from the clouds, at least it won't hit the ground because we have to moisten up the atmosphere before we start to see some rain. that is not in the forecast until next week. and maryland's most powerful radar is dry. and it will stay that way in the afternoon. if you're playing golf outdoors

today and maybe a little bit of tennis, still looking good and a few more clouds. and partly cloudy skies with a high temperature of 75. let's get a check of the traffic with lauren. >> as the main concern right now is 695, and there is a crash, and just over the inner loop shoulder and the road there and the outer loop, heavy delays, down to 29 miles an hour. and at liberty road. and you are taking a look at interstate 70. traffic is at a standstill, the drive time from 795 to 95, it is going to be 17 minutes. and over in parkville, the inner loop is clear with the push from harford road to 95. but the outer loop is starting to pick up. we're looking at a ride of just about two minutes extra than normal for those of you making the push from 95 up to 83. and 95 in white marsh. 44 miles an hour. south end of the beltway. and there is a crash not far from that scene on westbound pulaski highway at middle river road. more problems in baltimore city with a crash in north charles street at fayette street. and the problems persist over

in howard county and columbia, a crash near elliot grove. that is your time saver traffic. today we are expected to learn more about last week's washington navy yard shooting. the fbi is set to hold the final briefing this afternoon. the briefing will bring a substantial amount of information including more time line details. aaron alexis shot and killed 12 people, before police shot him to death last monday morning. well, today, families are mourning two fathers who killed in the washington navy yard. a funeral is planned for kenneth bernard proctor, 23 year federal employee working as a utility foreman at the naval yard. and family and friends will gather at a church in la plana to remember their father, and two sons, dr. daniels, will also be laid to rest, he was a handyman, and a father of five working for a furniture contractor when he was shot and killed. u.n. chemical weapons inspectors return to syria to complete their investigation on allegations of chemical weapons used on civilians.

lebanese officials say the team arrived in beirut and traveled by road to syria. the u.s. and allies say the president bashar al-assad's regime was behind the deadly attack in august killing 1400 people. activist groups now give a lower death toll. a baltimore family is expected to get $50,000 from the city because their daughter was allegedly molested by a mentor whom she met in mental school. he was never part of the school mentoring program. the girl says he picked her up from school and molested her. he is charged with sexual abuse and assault. the city's panel is set to approve a settlement with the family today. and we're learning more now about a cecil county teenager who lost his life during a home invasion robbie northeast. and jeff haiger is standing by live at the sheriff's office in elkton with more on that story. jeff? >> charley, police say there were actually two men who were shot inside that apartment where a group of masked men

entered on tuesday. the 19-year-old kenny curry tragically did not survive his injuries. it happened in the wee hours in the morning on tuesday. once the robber got inside the unit on east cecil effect, just outside of the -- cecil avenue, just outside the town of northeast, a struggle ensued and curry was shot in the torso and later died. >> it was multiple suspects that entered the residence. and also multiple people that were inside the residence when they did enter. >> shortly after deputies discovered curry injured inside his apartment, another person showed up at union hospital in elkton suffered from multiple gunshot wounds. and investigators later learned he was also inside that apartment. and they don't know if he was one of the robbers or one of the intended victims. and now last night, more than 200 people gathered at northeast park to remember ken ry curry. the person who made everyone happy around him. and who lived on the modest income of a wearhouse job. and who had nocriminal record. reporting live in cecil county,

jeff haiger, abc 2 news. new information for prospective gun owners and the thousands of applications waiting for review. maryland state police say those applications yet to be processed for the october 1st start date will not be required to have a handgun qualification license. a new law says that a handgun may not be sold rented or transferred unless there is a valid license. the licensing division started a 21 hour a day seven day a week operation last december. more than doubling the staff after gun applications spiked at an all time high. now in that time, the department reports more than 24,000 hours of overtime recorded. well, tonight, the person accused of hitting ja coby jones in the head with a champagne bottle never happened. ja coby and i had a verbal confrontation, quote, and that was. it and i never hit him with a bottle. and i wish people would stop spreading lies on the internet.

for the casino license and state officials hope to pick a winner at the end of the year. and now trying to simplify the offerings of credit card. and you have to add a spouse as a part of the account and joint account customers are not affected. and can you believe we're talking about the holidays? stores are talking about them too and gearing up for the rush. and toys r us are hiring 45,000 cease nal workers same number as last year. and hiring begins this week and runs through december 15. about 15% of last year's seasonal workers were then hired to full time jobs once the season ended. well, everybody is doing it. so that's why it continues for this year's fells point fun festival. you can sip beverages beyond the beer garden for the first time in decades. it was one of the only local festivals that don't let people walk around with an open container. the festival runs from october 4-6. they say this is a great

idea for vendors outside the beer garden. baltimore city plans to expand its charm city circulators to the north. the circle line currently runs from federal hill and penn station. and now there is a three mile expansion that would bring it north of charles village. the hours of operation would be the same. the purple route, the new route, it is expected to begin early next fall. the prediction is now in and baltimore bill is calling for a warm fall. the weather predicting crab walked the plank in the inner harbor yesterday morning. and the second year of forecasting. our team of meteorologists are not on board with bill for the rest of the year. lynette, you say the crab has just got it all wrong. >> yes, i think we could see an early winter across the area and what i mean by that is temperatures staying below average as we head toward the end of october, early november. and stat light and radar, not picking up on a whole lot in terms of rain this morning across maryland. but we have the clouds funneling in. and as we head down to the

south while they're dealing with some rain and thunderstorms there across the tennessee valley and entering north carolina, and plenty of rain in florida, and they're dealing with flooding concerns across that area. and now, we look at mount airy. and beautiful sun rise this morning. this is going to continue through the morning hours. and we are also dealing with the beautiful sunrise, no matter where you go, look at what is going on in dundalk and you can see the key bridge out there but also we are going to get some sunshine in here so we see the clds. don't think we are going to be socked in or anything. we won't see as much sunshine as we saw as we did yesterday. and the day before that. and the temperatures coming in at 52 degrees right now. in manchester. at 50 in boston. pass defla. 55. and shadyside at 504 degrees. and cooler in cambridge, at 49. and goldsboro at 49. actually cambridge is at 46. and goldsboro at 49. and galena, 50 degrees as of now. this is what is going on at the surface. and the high pressure is to the north of us. that is pretty much keeping us dry for today. we still have the dew points that are in the 40s and also

50s. and lear is that system to the south. -- here is that system to the south. this will be a little bit of a player in our forecast. as we head toward the weekend. and we will also start to have a coastal low develop. and now it could become subtropical. subtropical means it will take on characteristics of a nontropical storm and a tropical storm. so we will have to wait and see about that. and it stays away from us to the north and we could see a few more clouds kick in for the weekend and right now we will keep it dry. if it has the coast a little bit closer, then possibly we could see some showers in the forecast, and windy conditions as we head through sunday evening. 75 degrees is the high temperature for today. and if you want to send in a great photo, make sure you send it to abc 2 weather, tweet it to that. as we look at the seven-day forecast, yes, things are looking pretty good right now for the weekend. but as we head toward monday and tuesday, that's when we're talking about the storm offshore, still a question mark. a check of the traffic with lauren. >> well, the main trouble spot of the wednesday morning
