the flights purchased, hotel rooms booked but the government shuttion is forcing one engaged couple to make other plans. the couple said they had been planning on getting married at the grand canyon. the problem, the shutdown is forcing the closure of the park. >> i wanted to see the grand canyon. wanted to get married on the edge of the grand canyon. and that was our dream for a while. we put in the order for the permit a long time ago. and just the fact that we're being told we can't use the park in our own country, to get married. it was -- it's one of our national treasures and we can't even see it. >> the partial shutdown went into effect yesterday after congress failed to agree on a deal to keep the government funded. national national parks and museums are closed and 800,000 federal workers furloughed.

precip, all about high pressure developing south of the city. all the mild air over tennessee and louisville is being pushed to the north. is this normal? 10 to 15 degrees above average. today in baltimore we're going to be 13 degrees beyond where we should be for this time of year. tropics, say hello to jerry, won't be a big deal. western motion at 1 mile-per-hour. this is going to be torn apart, no problem. however, this could be a problem, national hurricane center has a 30% shot of this developing. a tropical wave now but notice the convection that has blown up on the north side of the system. when you get convection in the storms that is when they usually tend to pop. some of the models are saying it may be over this central gulf of mexico which the end of this week and by the weekend rather into early next week.

could be somewhere from really reveport to panama city beach, florida. we'll keep watching that. maybe tropical rains in our area by early next week. it's not october today. 87 degrees, that's crazy. way above average. and we're only going down to 60 for tonight. comfortably clear. 80s the next several days. more clouds thursday could bring us around 82 degrees. friday is gorgeous, back up to 86. saturday is lovely, back again up to 86 degrees. over the weekend there could be a couple of showers late sunday but a drenching downpour comes in by monday and tuesday. lots of rain possible and that is all because of the tropical system that i just showed you over the caribbean. we're going to talk about that coming up in a bit. lauren getting married on saturday. if you have not seen it on social media yet. >> thank you.

starting today. service members with families to feed or retired veterans on fixed incomes may have to look somewhere else for groceries. hyundai owners will now have to make a car payment as long as they are out of work. the company is offering to defer car payments for federal workers kept from their jobs by the shutdown. the automakers say it would allow hyundai owners to stop making car payments for as long as the shutdown keeps them out of work. the company also says those who buy or lease cars this month don't have to make payments until january. for federal workers stressed out by the shutdown a midtown bar is offering to pick up the tab. not for salary but for a drink. to soothe your troubles. the midtown barbecue downtown is offering a free drink for those who have to stay home. he says he feels for you. >> a lot of people are out of work today. >> the least we can do is buy them a drink, right? >> that's right.

the record is 89 degrees. we're actually going to test records over the next couple of days. it's sunny and 13 to 16 degrees above average. that is what youd need to know. more clouds by thursday so maybe the temperatures are 80 to 82 degrees. more heat as we go into friday where our afternoon highs could once again come close to 90. high pressure in control bringing a southwesterly wind flow. so we have the heat trapped into memphis. that is going to be pushed in our direction. we don't find storms. yes, there's moisture gathering over towards memphis, not a big deal. we're going to stay dry through the weekend. 90s, they are on the board from memphis to dallas, this is 10 to 15 degrees above where we should be. a quick look at the tropics, jerry, winds at 40 miles per hour. this is a system of concern going into the weekend. some of the forecast models will take it into the gulf of mexico. that's crazy. 87 degrees this afternoon. lauren cook, go ahead. >> i love it. very nice. fortunately if you're traveling

on the northeast corridor of 95, 65 miles per hour southbound at 695. so no trouble now from rosedale to downtown baltimore. the fort mchenry tunnel and harbor tunnel are both going to be up to speed. 54 miles per hour southbound of the jfx at northern parkway. no problems getting down to fayette street. 695 will be delay-free from parkville to towson. as we head to pikesville, this is the beltway at greenspring avenue. the inner loop free of delays all the way up to 83. outer loop normal drive time of 11 minutes to travel from 795 down to 95. for those of you in howard county, 70 at columbia pike, no concerns as you do travel westbound to frederick or eastbound to 695. a nightmare for thousands of drivers on one highway in illinois. a semi truck crashed into a ditch and caught fire. the cameras were rolling. it took firefighters two hours

to put out those flames. amazingly though, with all the video and all the incredible flames no one was hurt. >> unreal. a 23-year-old clerk suffered bruises to her face and eyes, after punched by an angry customer over 41 cents. watch this video. brutal attack happened at a gas station in lakewood, california. the clerk said the man in the blue shirt asked for a cigar. why not? after putting a dollar on the counter -- good grief. apparently needed 41 cents more. he threatened the clerk, tried to grab the cigar and run. the clerk put the cigar under the counter and told him to get out. watch. he punched her. knocked her glasses off injuring her eye. the man ran away. the clerk doesn't want to show her face but only wants to tell her side of the story. >> just happened so fast. my reaction -- i was like ok. he just went, bopped me.

>> it's a brutal attack on an innocent victim. who was just trying to make a living. >> they've got some good images of the guy. take a look. once again this is in california so police are still looking for that suspect. a new jersey man is facing drug charges after he mistakenly sends a text message to a police officer's 10-year-old son. police say this genius sent a text bragging about the marijuana for sale. the message he sent went to the son of a lieutenant in the police department. the lieutenant took over the messaging, they were texting back and forth. he set up a sting. police found drugs and money on the guy and this morning he's locked up. >> did you notice the first thing i noticed? crazy eyes on the mug shot. the cans for kids food drive is a success thanks to your generosity. this morning we sent abc2 news's lynette charles to the food bank in halethorpe.

are reaching out to those kids. food drives like to this -- this are really criminal. >> reporter: any advances or setbacks in childhood hunger? >> yeah. in the past year we have seen a lot of middle class families rebounding. while those people that typically have resources and are rebounding from their session we've seen 6,000 more children drop into hunger. children, vulnerable and seniors are what we're really focusing on right now. >> reporter: i know food drives help. what else can we do? >> come to the maryland food bank, donate your time. three-hour shifts are available to help sort and pack food like the food drives today. we can all take monetary donations. the easiest way, go to the web site and you can even buy the food that we need most through our virtual food drive. >> reporter: thank you, kate. she summed it up.

will range from really the 80s from most spots, maybe along the maryland pennsylvania line will be 82 to 84 degrees. the city could get near 88 degrees. tonight clear and comfortable, 68, a few upper 50s well north and west of the beltway. more on the forecast coming up in a bit. here's lauren cook with the traffic. >> 95 downtown, there is a crash southbound at the fort mchenry tunnel toll plaza. as we look at the latest drive times though it's not affecting travel from the thruway to the toll plaza. that is just the normal six-minute ride. looking at the jfx, no problems from the beltway all the way down to fayette street. and 695 up to speed. no problems from parkville all the way up to towson. looking at 55 miles per hour on the outer loop at dulaney valley road. calm conditions on the west side of the beltway, 11 minutes on the outer loop from 795 down to 95. that inner loop will be nice and clear as you do make the ride all the way up to 795.

this time now 6:02. in the face of the continued partial government shutdown the associated press is reporting president obama cancelled a trip to malaysia. reports say malaysian authorities received a call informing them of the cancelled trip. however the white house has yet to confirm that phone call. the president is reportedly changing his plans and congressional leaders are still talking about the partial shutdown. the house of representatives were denied several times by senate democrats after sending piecemeal legislation over for consideration. senate democrats even called a conference to find a common ground on their differences. >> speaker boehner has made the tea party radicals do the unthinkable. >> my goodness, they won't even sit down and have a discussion about this. >> meantime. more than 800,000 federal workers were sent home yesterday with no sign of when they will be allowed to return to work. if the shut june stretches into late october pension and

disability checks could be frozen for three million u.s. veterans. the president is scheduled for tuesday to talk about the partial shutdown in rockville. he will meet with a minority business owner who owns a road construction company. the white house indeed confirmed the phone call was made to malaysia and the president is not going overseas. a few more details. president obama's plans to visit a rockville construction company and talk about the government shutdown and how it will effect businesses. president obama will visit ann luis construction. an example of a company that has grown in recent years because of interest rates low and businesses therefore able to borrow cheaply. a white house spokesperson is saying a prolonged government shutdown would harm small businesses. they are called the greatest generation for a reason. a group of world war ii veterans determined to see the memorial that honors their bravery, storm the barricades that blocked them out. the shutdown
