>> two police in the jamaican capital are reporting two officers are shot dead. the man was said to be a major drug dealer. troops are storming his stronghold and more casualties. a state of emergency was imposed on sunday to make it easier to arrest christopher coke to the united states. he faces drug and weapons charges. >> this will be a turning point for the nation, to confront the powers of evil that have penalized the society in the current us the label of one of the murder capitals of the world. we must confront this criminal element witte determination and resolve. >> jamaica's prime minister there.

let's speak to our correspondent in kingston on the line. what is happening right now? >> it has been clear major operation started in jamaica. it is focusing on west kingston and i was driving through the city i could see many soldiers driving in a convoy down from a military camp towards downtown west kingston, the stronghold where it is believed christopher coke is hiding. people have been reporting loud explosions. some people have seen bodies in the streets. you have to bear in mind that this community as back-to-back. even though the soldiers -- they are trying to reduce to get into the center. they will have to literally go house to house in an attempt to bring control to the streets.

>> i'm sure a lot of people from outside might be finding it hard to understand why there is an uprising in support of someone who has a reputation as a gangster. >> it is a reputation he may have for some, but i remember going into the area a year ago and people saying christopher coke -- nothing happened, he provided a sense of safety. he basically fills a void which devastates left behind. even though some say he is a criminal, some people support him to the death. >> nick, thank you very much. let's turn to some of the other international news. iran has notified the atomic energy agency of the agreement to send enriched uranium to turkey in exchange for fuel.

western powers question the value of that deal. brazil is also a partner. there is a feeling it does not address the demand that iran holds all in richmond. sanctions are still a possibility. ethiopia's party looks for a landslide in the national election. sunday's poll has been condemned by a group as theater. it says the ruling party of the prime minister intimidated people into voting for it. bp has pledged $500 million to study the impact of the oil spill on the gulf of mexico. the chief executive says his firm is committed to doing all it can to lessen the impact. south korea has announced sanctions against the north over the torpedo attack that sank one of its warships. this includes any north korean

ships from south korean waters. there are some signs china may exert new pressure. the u.s. will join an anti- summary of excise -- anti- submarine exercise. >> how to respond without risking further escalation. here is what he plans to do. >> south korea will ban all north korean ships from its waters. we will suspend all trade links and refer incidents to the u. n. the warship was split in half by an explosion that hit without warning at the end of march. it has been salvaged in two parts and an international team has completed the investigation. they concluded the ship was sunk

by a north korean torpedo it designed to explode in the same way as this test conducted by the australian navy. remains were found close to the wreckage. military retaliation was never an option because of the obvious risk, but the response it has decided on, cutting trade links and banning ships, will have an impact. trade between the two halves still makes up a sizable chunk of north korea's economy. >> speaking on a visit to beijing, hillary clinton said america is standing firmly behind its allies. >> our support for south korea's defense is unequivocal. president obama has directed military commanders to coordinate closely with their counterparts to deter future aggression.

budgets. it will save 6.2 billion pounds this year. the men said they wanted to shop -- send a shock wave. >> this is the first time the government announced difficult decisions. it will not be the last. i want people to know that we do this not for its own sake but in order to improve the quality of people's lives. >> the government will spend 1.7 billion pounds less on supplies and less first clas train travel. $600 million less for [unintelligible] there will be less for low priority spending.

320 million pounds will be saved by scrapping new child's trust funds. it will be stopped entirely next january, but extra savings have been found to protect the school's budget and international development. a few weeks ago the liberal democrats oppose cuts. >> these are only the first absolute money to take to put our public finances back in shape. there will be many more tough decisions. we believe the british people understand his choices can no longer be ducked. >> if george osborne wants to cut 6 billion pounds they should have spelled out in detail what is the tale will not do in the future. people need to know details because only then will you need to know what it means in terms of growth.
