sanbornton coming in at double that amount in just the past 30 hours. 7.01 inches of rain. tilton near six. laconia five and a half inches of rain. keene just under five. same story south sutton, west swansea at 4.59. in concord an impressive total just under four inches of rain. you notice the heaviest has shifted off to the east, just a few lingering showers across the great north woods. but across a good part of central and southern new hampshire, outside of a shower or two in the upper valley, it will be mainly dry this even. any showers up north should move out by about 8:00 or 9:00 this evening and then skies will start to clear out as dry air noses in from the north and west. how long does that dry air stick around before the next chance of any heavier rain, we'll look at all that straight ahead. tom: the heavy wind and rain is a concern right now on the seacoast as well. jennifer: especially because of a recent full moon and the astronomically high tides. jennifer crompton is live in

at this hour. reporter: well, it's actually nearly low tide at this point, and things are very quiet. but it was very different a few hours ago. the heavy wind and rain came through here as it did throughout the region and there was some driving issues along the way. but the real issue here peaked between 1:00 and 3:00 along the immediate coast, because that's when that astronomical high tide hit and there are always worries about erosion, street flooding and especially flooding along businesses and homes near the marsh. there were still a few hours until high tide 'and already a small boat was pushed ashore in rye harbor where high seas kept fishermen in port, and boat owners bail out rain filled dingies and checked lines being tested by strong winds and surf. >> it's quite concerning and that's when you wish that you had had a really dear friend who owned a boat.

reporter: rye's police chief checked areas of concern along route 1a, places where storms have breached seawalls before. >> it's an unusual high tide, so with the wind blowing in, that tide won't go out as far sometimes. reporter: waves crashed against seawalls up and down the coast, creating lots of splashover and as usual a dramatic scene, and a lure for many wanting to see the power of the ocean in action. >> not too close, no. we've been here before, so we know to stay away from the wall. reporter: that wasn't true of everyone. a worry given the rocks and other debris that can come crashing over oh. >> some of our bigger concerns are people along the sea actually around the rocky bend area. reporter: there has been street flooding especially in areas on the back side of hampton beach along the marsh, like hobson avenue, where naishes were separated by a virtual river at high tide. does that make you nervous to stay here surrounded by water? >> no, it's happened so often.

reporter: as dramatic as it looks, it's the norm too. >> because i've been here for it. it will go back out in an hour. reporter: officials keeping an eye on things, not wanting locals to get too complacent. >> give it some time, it's going to subside with the tide. but obviously if it looks like it's going to be a problem, then err on the side of caution. reporter: her experience proved true, the roads are clear now. the roads here clear as well. as the tide went out the water receded and things are just fine. officials do have their eyes on the next high tide which hits after midnight. but thankfully they are not expecting a lot of problems, just as they were hoping today would not prove true, and obviously things are very nice right now. so we're live at hampton beach, jennifer crompton, wmur news 9. tom: a new report says new hampshire electric companies need to do more to prepare for widespread outages, following the thanksgiving snowstorm of last year.

heavy wet snow from the storm knocked out power to nearly 275,000 customers. making it the fourth largest outage in state history. it took five days for nearly everyone's service to be restored. a report from the public utilities commission says utilities need to improve the weather forecasting that they receive, also each has to review how it prestages repair crews before a major storm. and they need to consider how to handle widespread repair work during major holidays like thanksgiving. tonight, republican candidate seacoast. jennifer: he just wrapped up his second town hall. adam sexton begins our team candidate coverage tonight live from durham. reporter: well, dr. carson had a fairly good showing in the last wmur granite state poll, and he continues to be a good draw out on the campaign trail. this afternoon he kind of combined those two things holding an event in the same building that houses the u.n.h.

along with him a fairly good sized crowd. campaigning on the seacoast, dr. ben carson endorsed new hampshire's first in the nation status following comments by the republican national committee chairman that the current system should be reexamined. >> i like the system, i think it works very well. because it's important to have the kind of state where people can get up close and personal. and really have an opportunity to find out who the candidates are. questions from a retirement community crowd in exeter, tell them if you're looking for political correctness, fine another candidate. >> it keeps people from expressing themselves, and it's the expression, the conversation that leads to solutions. people who didn't vote in 2012 -- reporter: at a town hall meeting in durham a student challenged carson on the issue of global warming. >> do you seriously not believe that climate change is happening?

any point in time temperatures are going up or temperatures are going down, of course that's happening. when that stops happening, that's when we're in big trouble. reporter: carson supporters on campus say they like the doctor's smarts and believe his cool demeanor contrasts well with frontrunner donald trump. but above all they seem to like that he's not a traditional candidate. >> he's on outsider, he's not a life long politician, not like jeb bush who has had so many other bushes in the white house. >> he gets right to the point of what needs to be done and doesn't mess around. reporter: tonight dr. carson will hold a meet and greet with fellow doctors and members of the medical community in new castle. and from there it's back to iowa where he's been gaining momentum. adam sexton, wmur news 9. tom: republican candidate for president jeb bush was also in new hampshire today for several events, and he too weighed in on new hampshire's first in the nation primary status in a one on one interview with wmur political director josh

mcelveen. josh: for jeb bush the day started with a very frank roundtable discussion about the heroin epidemic and the crisis of addiction in new hampshire. a talk that included first responders, law enforcement, local officials, even recovering addicts, bush told the group that the federal government plays a key role in the fight on heroin. first stopping the drug from coming into the country and then partnering with the state and local communities to break the cycle of opioid addiction. but he also pushed back against the recent comments made by the national chair of the republican party, reince preeb us and -- >> as long as new hampshire voters continue to be as discerning and as interested in the process as they are, which i don't believe will ever change, you can have regional primaries after february, after new hampshire. i think it's an ideal place to start and i'm looking forward to campaigning here with heart and

tom: lawyers for a nashua woman accused of kill her daughter are asking that certain evidence be excluded in her upcoming trial. jennifer: kaitlin marin is charged with second degree murder in the death of brielle gage. court records say she told misthat her daughter fell down the stairs twice, once after a seizure and another time while she was carrying her. the deputy assistant medical examiner looked at the child's body and said her injuries were not consistent with that story. defense lawyers say evidence was collected before an official medical finding was reached. the state is expected to file its response to this motion shortly.

tom: a woman who was murdered in arizona more than three decades ago has been identified, and she is from nashua. brenda girou left new hampshire when she was 20, her father says he never heard from her again. arizona authorities say she left with john calhauser a man now serving time for kill his ex-wife. her body was found in tucson in 1981, but it wasn't until 2012 when her body was exhumed that things started to come together. a composite was done of her face and the picture was sent out through social media. calhauser is a person of interest in her death. bhus i day for the weather department and i guess we got a busy week ahead as well. mike: the end of this week will be quiet and dry, it's busy because we're also watching hurricane joaquin. but the sun does return tomorrow. today.

mike: yes, we take a look at doppler radar, estimated rainfall rates, we had one to two inches per hour in some spots. this is the estimate in terms of the total rainfall over new hampshire. you notice a lot of greens and kind of that pale yellow in portions of the monadnock region up through concord. but clearly seeing the yellow

from the lakes region in through the mount washington valley, that's where five to as much as seven inches of rain accumulated out of this particular storm. and then the numbers do taper off to the north and west. very impressive totals in concord, just under four inches of rain out of this storm. earlier, yesterday, only 1.54 inches had accumulated in the month of september in concord. if we were on that pace right through the last couple of days of the month, it would have turned out to be the 19th driest september on record. as for rainfall in the last 24 hours, we're up to 5.5 inches of rain and after today that puts us 20th wettest on record out of the 110 year record. the average 3.35 inches of rain. all the heavy stuff is gone. lingering showers continue in the great north woods. couple more scooting in towards the upper valley. but outside of that will be mainly dry a good part of the evening. a lot of dry air building in from that direction takes over

for thursday. now, what about the chance of showers the next couple days? they do exist in a few parts of new hampshire, but what about more heavy rain, of course that will depend on the track of hurricane joaquin, sitting down near the bahamas, josh judge has a closer look at the possible track with that hurricane. >> thanks, mike. the hurricane of course turned into a hurricane, wasn't expected to and all of a sudden it did and now it may become a category 2 or 3 hurricane. let's take a look at where it is right now, just north of the bahamas, and as can you see it's moving in the wrong direction. but the national hurricane center forecast does project it to make that turn and start heading northward during the day tomorrow and through friday. here's the official track from the national hurricane center, making landfall somewhere between the carolinas and up toward new jersey, as a category 2 hurricane perhaps, and then degrading into a tropical storm and then perhaps a depression as it gets closer to us. how do we get that track? there are several different computer models.

here's the european model, watch this one, completely different. it shows the turn around but keeps it completely out to sea. now that's not what is expected, but certainly one possibility. here's closer to what's expected, this is another model. that model shows landfall somewhere around the carolinas, not what the official track is. you have to average these tracks out, moving up the east coast. the track has certainly slowed down. here's a look at the computer models, this is the spaghetti plot, puts them all making landfall around the carolinas and they loop around and come up toward us. so you see the different tracks from the computer models that the national hurricane center has to use. the next few days no worries there, right, mike? mike: that's right, josh, we don't have to worry about any more heavy rain. we could use the break, let some of that rain soak in and add up to the rivers, they're rising

close to flood stage, some of the smallest streams will begin to drop over the next couple days. the the dry air is taking over and temperatures are beginning to fall. earlier today it was still warm, in the 70's over southeastern new hampshire, but right now it back into the 60's. 50's to the north and west and very dry air is taking over from that direction. you'll notice the dew points an indicator of how much moisture is in the air, really dropping off significantly back to our north and west, and that takes over tomorrow into friday. that will also help squash any leftover showers to our south as well. a slight shot of a shower or two in southern parts of the state sometime on friday or friday night. but outside of that it should be mainly dry until sometime over the course of the weekend. by the weekend, saturday may trigger a couple of widely scattered showers. that would be in southern parts of the state, same story on sunday. if we do hear from joaquin, we're talking about the remnants moving in, it would be in the
