after yesterday' s school shooting on a community college campus. good afternoon to you. i am erin fehlau. 10 are people are dead and seven were injured. abc' s lauren lyster is live from oregon with the latest on the case. lauren: 10 are dead, seven critically -- seven injured, three critically. we learn more about the gunman and the survivors. last night, family and friends of victims mourned the tragedy in roseberg, but the town woke up still shaken. >> the range of emotions, from disbelief, from anger, from sadness to resolution. it' s still very raw for a lot of people. lauren: overnight police and fbi searched for clues about the suspected shooter, swarming this nearby apartment complex where he lived with his mother. >> i just thought he was an odd guy. lauren: the 26-year-old, identified as chris harper-mercer, is seen here in his myspace photo.

campus at umpqua community college late morning. thursday >> we' gunshot wounds. lauren: police officers facing off with the gunman. he' lauren: the shooter, declared dead. his father last night spoke to reporters, asking for privacy. ian mercer: obviously it has been a devastating day. shocked -- shocked is all i can say. lauren: but this morning, tales of heroism emerging. witnesses say 30-year-old student and army vet chris mintz charged straight at the gunman , trying to save who he could. hannah miles: and he actually ran back towards the building where the shooting was, and he ran back into the building, and i don' t know what happened to him. lauren: he is out of surgery now , recovering from seven gunshot wounds, seen here in this photo from a social posting. as for the gunman, abc news has learned he was armed with three pistols and an assault-style rifle. authorities are still looking

for the motive as this college remains closed until monday. lauren lyster, abc news, roseburg, oregon. erin: new this noon, we have learned that two men from hanscom air force base in massachusetts were among those killed in an overnight plane crash in afghanistan. at least 11 people were killed including six american service members. u.s. officials say the transport plane crashed while taking off from an airport in afghanistan. the taliban is claiming responsibility for the crash, but u.s. officials are dismissing those claims. >> now, your stormwatch 9 forecast. eric: n: moving now to the weather. eyes along the east coast are on the tropics -- even in space. this is an image tweeted today from astronaut scott kelly of hurricane joaquin churning over the bahamas but recent models , show that the storm may be moving out to the sea. let' s check in with meteorologist kevin skarupa. kevin: that storm stalled, really hammering the bahamas.

s marci gonzalez has more on the damage the storm has caused so far. marci: relentless rain, wind, and dangerous flooding along the east coast. >> nothing much you can do but hunker down. marci: all of this from a separate storm unrelated to hurricane joaquin. gov. mcauliffe: we are dealing with two situations, a major , major severe event of rainfall . at the same time having to deal with this potential hurricane. marci: joaquin a category 4 hurricane battering the bahamas, lingering in the caribbean before moving north. forecasters expect it to stay off-shore. >> that' s a big sigh of relief. marci: but are still warning people to take precautions. dr. knabb: a hurricane does not have to go directly over your town, it doesn' t even have to make landfall to have an impact on you, especially if you' re along the coast. marci: in new jersey, residents along the shore are closely watching the storm track. >> i am very nervous. marci: nearly three years after

court for that plea. and ray, what was the reason the prosecution gave for not insisting on any jail time? ray: the assistant county attorney told the court that both they and the child' s mother wanted to spare the young boy the pain and the trauma of having to justify against the relative. nicholas chase admitted friday morning in court to burning the boy' s arm this spring. in exchange for the guilty plea, the state dropped an assault charge. chase was cooking easter dinner at his girlfriend' s apartment in franklin, and the boy was visiting. chase says that he can' t offer an explanation for what happened, the prosecutor outlining for the court what went on in the apartment. joseph cherniske: the defendant was cooking a turkey dinner using a knife to prop open the oven door. the defendant took the knife out of the door and placed in on the counter, he called -- over and

touched the hot knife to arm . -- would testify that the knife was hot and it hurt, and he told the defendant that it hurt. ray: chase also put the knife on his own arm after burning the child. in order to ease the child' s pain, chase put a bag of frozen peas on the burn. however, when the boy was checked out at the hospital hours later, it was found he had suffered first and second degree burns. the sentencing was postponed because the top of the mother could not be there, and she told the court she wants to be there. however, the assistant county attorney told the court she is in agreement with the plea bargain, which spares chase any jail time. reporting live in concord, ray brewer, wmur news 9. erin: breaking news this noon. we are learning that education secretary arne duncan will step down in december. duncan said in a letter to staff that he is returning to chicago to live with his family. president barack obama is tapping deputy secretary john king, jr. as acting secretary through the end of his term. also new this noon, a big change for public schools in the queen

city. starting in november, elementary school will begin at 8:45 and end at 2:30. middle school starts at 7:35 and ends at 2:20. and high school starts at 7:45 and ends at 2:53. this is all due to the recently approved teachers contract and takes effect on monday, november 30. so they are starting school later in getting out later. several presidential candidates will be hitting the campaign trail here in the granite state this weekend. governor john kasich is holding a town hall meeting in goffstown right now. senator ted cruz has just begun his two-day visit making a stop in nashua. former senator rick santorum and businesswoman carly fiorina will arrive in new hampshire tomorrow. they, along with ted cruz, will attend the practical federalism forum at snhu in hooksett. to get more information about candidates visiting the granite

erin: we have breaking news affecting hurricane joaquin. the u.s. coast guard is searching for a cargo ship with 33 people aboard that went missing as category 4 hurricane joaquin hit the bahamas. reportedly, that coast guard, the ship they were following was heading to puerto rico from jacksonville, but we will continue to update this story for you throughout the day. moving on here, new this noon, the vatican is responding to confusion regarding pope francis' visit with kentuck clerk kim davis. the vatican says the pontiff' s meeting with davis should not be considered a form of support of

kevin: really a sharp division from all of the moisture in the north shore, we have the system that moves through on wednesday, a long trend in the carolinas, and farther south, you have the hurricane. that is all what we are tracking right now, and watching the coastline rather quickly. we continue to watch seas running anywhere from six feet to as much as nine feet, coastal flood advisory posted. inland sections -- a study bank of clouds. a few breaks in the overcast as even farther north, but beyond that in the afternoon, we will be seeing a chance of a couple of hours trying to creep into southern areas. this is making a little more of a steady progress farther to the north. for southern areas of the state, there will be the chance as we work our way late this afternoon and this evening for a few areas of rainfall to develop, and that could last several hours, maybe .2 inches of rain during the

i think that will be our best chance of any kind of precipitation for the most part over the weekend. i think we still run the risk tomorrow of a couple of pop of showers in southern areas, but the farther north you go, especially where we have the peak foliage going, things will be drier, at least brighter. here is the train of moisture that is farther south, and even farther south of there, we are talking hurricane joaquin right now. there is the shower right along i 90. plenty of drier air this will have to battle trying to get into the states. temperatures will have early 50' s, dew points mainly in the 30' s, so that works for us as far as the lack of showers -- we do not eat any showers after all of the rainfall we had, and with the weekend approaching, we do not need these showers. farther north, we drop into the 30' s later on tonight. here is the shower activity i said we would probably
