that have unfortunately become addicted. >> friend of mine in february died of an overdose. reporter: had the trash barrel we find needles. >> people are dying, people are really dying. reporter: for the first time the heroin fueled drug problem is the number one concern for new hampshire residents, ahead of the economy, education and health care. >> this is the first time that we've seen drug abuse rise as the most important issue, anywhere near this sort of level, for the last 15 years. it's -- reporter: it wasn't long ago heroin had the reputation of the street gutter drug. but this drug doesn't discriminate between is a rage or income level. nearly half of new hampshire's population know someone who used heroin in the last five years, a number higher for those under the age of 35. >> this is a wide, wide ranging crisis, it's touching people across the state. reporter: perhaps sparked by the prescription use of opioids,

the review of the medical community's prescribing practices and increasing the availability of the life saving overdose antidote narcan. the governor says solving this problem goes beyond the government. >> this is an awe hand on deck moment for new hampshire. josh: the poll also says more than half of new hampshire residents are willing to spend more taxpayer money to deal with this epidemic. jennifer: one of the biggest challenges is fining treatment immediately. the number of affordable beds limited and waiting lists long. and the window of time for someone seeking help is very short. heather hamel is here to explain if they can't get admitted quickly, they may give up fast. reporter: hope for new hampshire and recovery in manchester works with people recovering every day. they say depending on a person's state of mind they may only have five minutes to help them. >> the state that we're in right now is there's no beds, unless

reporter: it a problem they run into frequently. >> we can get you put on some waiting lists, but right now the waiting list is about four to six weeks. for detox. reporter: casey says that wait is risky. he's in recovery himself and says even people who are motivated and come in daily often break down. >> then you don't see them come in the door any more, because that second and third day of detoxing off opioids and off alcohol is rough and a lot of people won't make it through that. reporter: only a small percentage of beds and treatment centers are used fortune insured or medicaid patients. we asked the farnum center, they say for long-term care 30 to 40% of their beds are used for those patients. statewide insurance copays for treatment are high. and paying cash for a bed can cost thousands of dollars a week. and local hospitals can provide

>> what options are there, just -- >> valley street. that's the option. reporter: he's talking about jail, a grim reality that makes the role of the recovery center more important. >> we're going to val i date that you are a person that needs help. we're going to give you some empathy because we've been there, a lot of us have been will and we're going to give you support. hope for natural recovery has seen more than 500 people since they opened in july. nay applaud the efforts of state officials, but says it's not enough. >> it has its timelines and unfortunately people that have substance abuse disorder don't have long timelines. reporter: state officials have said that the 211 information line is a good avenue to get help. we called today and waited 16 minutes on hold, they said we were the third heroin related call of the day. they gave us a list of resources to call but couldn't give us immediately help. josh: an arrest tonight in an

armed robbery that littleton police say is the direct result of heroin use. police say 25-year-old eric briggs robbed a circle k convenience store over the weekend, he refused bail and is now awaiting arraignment. jennifer: prescription drugs are at the center of an investigation in berlin. ry ricardi russo was arrested on several charges. reporter: authorities made the arrest on tuesday night on grafton street. a short time later police came to ruse sops business on main street after searching his car and his business, police uncovered large amounts of cash and prescription pills. 30-year-old ricardi russo of rum ford, maine facialed a judge wednesday, charged with four counts of selling a controlled drug and one count of conspiracy to sell, all class b felonies w. the help of tips from the public, berlin police have been investigating russo for a year.

police chief russo here after a traffic stop tuesday night, then searched his silk screening business on main street where they found cash, prescription pills and drug paraphernalia. police say russo has a prior criminal history including possession of drugs and receiving stolen property. he's being held on $50,000 cash bail. >> one thing i'd like to do is thank the community. there were several tips, some of them anonymous, some not. that assisted us with this investigation. reporter: russo could face additional charges as police continue to investigate. kristen carosa, wmur news 9. josh: a major water main break has impacted traffic in manchester all day long after a section of road crumbled and crews are expected to be on the scene for several more hours. andy hershberger has an update on the situation. reporter: you can see the work that's already been done behind us here at the intersection of brown avenue and south beech street. the water has been stopped, but the work is far from over, after

a significant water main break stopped traffic at this busy intersection in manchester. >> it's a mess. never seen anything like this before. reporter: tens of thousands of gallons of water began gushing from this water main shortly after 9:00 wednesday morning. buckling asphalt, closing streets, and cutting off water in this area. >> i went down to do my laundry and there was no water in the house. so my neighbor called me, so i came down to see what was going on. reporter: the break was in a 10-inch line, slightly bigger than the ones that usually burst. the intersection at brown and south beech was quickly closed. >> the water will wash the gravels out from underneath the asphalt, and the compromises the structural integrity of the road. reporter: at the peak, several hundred houses were without

the main was isolated and many of those were turned back on. >> well, my mom was awake, and went to, i turned on the water to rinse her coffee cup and no water, and i thought her house is pretty old and i'm having it there. then i saw neighbors coming out. so i knew something was happening, and this is awful. reporter: crews worked all afternoon to fix the water, and the road. paving cost. the water does a lot of damage to the paving. so after we fix it, it will be refilled and the highway department will repave it. reporter: the work continues here at this intersection of brown and south beech. we did speak to one resident a few moments ago who said he's still without water. but officials say the water should be turned back on for everyone by early evening. road crews say they are work through the night to get this section of street passable for

josh: the west stewartstown man mo faced screut think after his stepdaughter was murdered four years ago is in jail this evening, charged with criminal trespass and resisting arrest. jennifer: wendell noyes was arrested sunday on a warrant after complaints about disturbances at a mobile home park as well as a nearby store and tampering with a utility meter box. noyes faced a joe on monday and is being held on $2500 cash or surety. the murder of 11-year-old celina cass remains an open and unsolved case. josh: a fight over bail landed a hollis man back before a judge today, charged with possessing child pornography he allegedly engaged in chide porn fantasies with a psychology professor. the defense says bail should be lowered because he has income

you can see the trees really getting going with the colors there, even losing some leaves on a couple of those trees. at weirs beach we've become overcast there too with some clouds moving through, we've had some sunshine poking through the clouds. especially in the southern part of the state, but a few clouds moving through now and that will be the case through the early evening and overnight as well. but sunny, dry weather will persist. once we get past these clouds. some showers on friday. we actually still need some rain and will be welcome on friday. it all clears out though for the weekend, it looks like a real winner of a long weekend, if you have plans to check out the foliage or go apple picking, any of the beautiful fall activities that you might want to do, the weather looks like it will be agreeing with that. here with the high temperatures today, 64 degrees is the average concord. and we went over that in a lot of locations today. we got to 70 in concord, 71 manchester, nashua, 70 in keene

whitefield into berlin with more clouds that were overhead, so that kept the temperatures a little cooler out there. right now we're starting to see the temperatures falling back, 68 degrees in manchester, nashua 61 in portsmouth. upper 50's in the great north woods. here are those clouds, you can certainly see them in the upper valley getting into the lakes region and even up north of the notches too. there might be a couple of sprinkles that get going. you can see a couple of green splotches on the radar there in the upper valley and northern coos county. a few of these light rain showers may make it through here in the evening, but they will be few and far between and most of us will remain dry through the evening hours of it all part of a weak cold front that's sliding a krs the area, and what it's going to do tomorrow, bring in reenforcement of more cooler, crisper october air, instead of the more late august early september air that we had today. future cast going through time

sprinkles to the north or west, but those are over ask done with for most people by midnight and then the skies clear. here's where we start out tomorrow morning in the 40's in the southern part of the state. 30's up north. with the sunshine that we'll have, we'll warm up to comfortable levels, upper 50's up north and low 60's in the southern part of the state, another beautiful october day. things change though on friday, by daybreak, rain enters, so especially in the upper valley and northern part of the state it will be rainy at the bus stop on friday morning, but from concord southward probably holds off until about mid morning. periods of rain and then tapering to showers for the rest of friday. but the forecast looking good for the weekend. for more on the weekend's forecast and of course the big foliage forecast too and what's happening right now, we're going over oh to josh judge for more on that. josh: it one of the biggest weekends for checking out the color and traveling our great state. let's take a peek, if you're

pretty good, a mix of clouds and sun, the temperatures on saturday a little cooler than sunday. then monday warming up more so. but a good amount of sunshine, almost no rain chances, and in terms of color you're between 70 and 90% with with a corn you -- with a lot of color. beautiful weather getting progressively warmer, 50's, 60's, 70's. the find becoming much more vibrant and vivid each day. as we head into the weekend that will progress. monadnock region 50's. then near 70 on monday. more gorgeous weather to check out colors, swansea, troy. the milford pumpkin festival going on, more of the same with temperatures progressively warmer all three days and a good amount of color for you. over at the seacoast the least amounts of color, but still beautiful weather there and a few trees starting to turn. so with that in mind we'll take a look at the rest of this week heading into the weekend, haley.

jamie: we're two days away from week six of friday night football. only 12 games on the schedule. the game of the weekend comes on saturday, bulldogs and grizzlies. we stopped by both practices today, bedford and goffstown. the game features number two goffstown hosting number three bedford. 1:30. a pair of undefeated teams likely to determine the north division champion. these are two of the top offenses in the state. bulldogs let by junior running back nick lahey, the grizzlies featuring senior quarterback casey. >> it's our homecoming week first off, so that's a big deal,
