erin: we are following breaking is out of our room this morning. emergency crews are responding to a propane leak on bypass 28. right now, evacuations are underway. emergency crews are on scene, and they have called for second alarm. the road will likely be closed for some time, and police are asking people to please avoid this area. now to a developing situation in arizona. one student is dead, three others hospitalized after yet another campus shooting. this time at northern arizona university about two hours from tuscon. we have learned the gunman is in custody. abc' s bazi kanani has more. >> multiple people possibly shot. bazi: an emergency call at another college campus. four people shot overnight at northern arizona university in flagstaff, in a parking lot near a dorm. one of the victims dead. the 18-year-old gunman now in

>> two separate student groups got into a confrontation. the confrontation turned physical. bazi: as the victims of this latest school shooting remain in the hospital, president obama is on the way to oregon to meet today with the grieving families of the nine killed in last week' s massacre at a community college. the white house says the president is looking into using executive actions to expand background checks for gun purchases without waiting for congress to act. sec. earnest: the president' s team is hard at work on them, considering what other options may be available to the president to try to keep guns out of the hands of criminals. bazi: most republican presidential candidates say the focus should instead be on mental health. this morning, one of the top polling candidates, dr. ben carson, is defending his recent suggestion that part of the solution to mass shootings could be more guns, including at schools. dr. carson: in fact, if i had a child in a school, i would much prefer that there be somebody who is trained on that campus

the mercy of some individual who has lost their senses. bazi: in arizona, police have fight. school shooting so far this year. bazi kanani, abc news. erin: so far this year, there have been more than 40 school shootings. according to the cdc, more than 400,000 people have died due to new this noon, two people are dead after a crash in jefferson. state police say it appears a 2005 impala was traveling north on route 115 when it ran a stop sign last night. it traveled through the intersection and hit a tree. two passengers in their 70' s were killed. the driver, who is also in his 70' s, suffered minor injuries. we got a possible glimpse of the upcoming race for the u.s. senate this morning in manchester at a summit on manufacturing and technology. governor maggie hassan announced on monday that she will run for the senate, taking on incumbent senator kelly ayotte. wmur'

s ray brewer was live at the event, and ray, did it feel like a campaign event? ray: erin, there were none of the posters, or political signs but everyone in the room was very aware of the undercurrent, that these two women could soon be locked in a battle for their political lives. gov. hassan: our unemployment rate continues to fall, and is now 3.6%, the 4th lowest in the country. sen. ayotte: that we get to tax reform that makes you more competitive as you are building great products here and selling them overseas. ray: at a summit dealing with advanced manufacturing and high technology, there was a likely preview of the upcoming race for the u.s senate. governor maggie hassan announcing this week that she is running for the seat currently held by senator kelly ayotte. john: when they' it' s going to be very cordial. ray: political reporter john distaso says events like this give the candidates a chance to stake out their territory for re going to try to top each other in terms of new hampshire and the economy and to the problems of the state.

ray: and distaso says another theme you can expect both to tout is their ability to work with members of the other party. gov. hassan: to keep our state moving forward, last month we enacted a fiscally responsible bipartisan compromise on the budget. that includes business tax cuts while providing safeguards that protect our ability critical priorities in future budgets. sen. ayotte: i' ve been ranked the 7th most bipartisan by independent groups because i work across the aisle to get things done for people in new hampshire. ray: ayotte says that she' s not surprised by hassan' s decision to run, saying hassan was recruited by washington democrats like harry reid. and that hassan' s decision was more about national politics than this is about new hampshire. in the studio, ray brewer, wmur news 9. erin: new this noon, 9 people were arrested in manchester on drug charges. manchester police obtained a search warrant for an apartment on laurel street yesterday morning.

we have a crew onto the scene, and we will update you on a situation online and here on wmur. bill cosby is about to testify under oath in a sex assault case for the first time in 10 years. today' s deposition is for the case involving judith huth. she is accusing cosby of sexually assaulting her at the playboy mansion in 1974 when she was just 15 years old. she is among dozens of women who have alleged that the man once deemed america' s favorite dad drugged or sexually assaulted them. cosby has never been charged with a crime, partly because the statute of limitations has expired in most cases. house republicans are regrouping after a shocking announcement in the race for house speaker. john boehner' s likely successor kevin mccarthy dropped out of the race leaving many wondering who will take the coveted position. abc' s karen travers has more on this speaker shakeup. karen: house republicans

huddling today on capitol hill , discussing their next move. rep. mccarthy: we had very good conference, working together, trying to work together. karen: majority leader kevin mccarthy abruptly taking himself out of the race for house speaker yesterday. rep. mccarthy: if i can' t unite everybody, it' s better to find someone who will. karen: his sudden and very unexpected withdrawal throwing house republicans into chaos. rep. sanford: nobody knows anything at this point. karen: mccarthy had the support of the overwhelming majority of house republicans, but far-right members refused to say they would unite behind him. so who is in the running? representative paul ryan of wisconsin. his party' s vice presidential contender just three years ago, he says he doesn' t want it, but many top republicans are trying to change his mind. rep. issa: paul ryan is the right man right now. rep. mccarthy: if he decides to do it, he will be an amazing speaker. karen: congressman daniel webster of florida says he is in. he has the backing of conservatives in the house freedom caucus that helped

afternoon, especially by the evening commute, there will be a around, especially in the southern half of the state. farther north, a weakening process will continue between now and about 4:00 this afternoon as all this continues to edge southeastward. 40' s to near 60 degrees in southern areas due to these cooler temperatures overnight. a lot of locations have gone up 10, 12, 15 degrees you will notice with futurecast, a line of rainfall making its way through southern areas of the state in time for the evening commute. bear in mind with the holiday weekend, a lot of folks will be getting away way to their holiday weekend destinations, contending with thought rainfall during -- with that rainfall. beyond that, extra clouds out there tomorrow morning should give way to partial sunshine and
