gathered today to talk about a plan to make drug courts available statewide. saying that wift and sweeping action need to be taken to fight the state's heroin crisis, lawmakers have proposed a bill to establish and fund drug courts in every county. >> on both side of the aisle people recognize we're in the middle of a heroin epidemic and that we need a multifaceted approach. reporter: the $3 million plan announced tuesday in manchester city hall would provide grant money to counties would you these courts and would aid counties where these courts are already in place. the move is largery in response to the deadly rise in opiate abuse in new hampshire but will also help other addicts who opt boo the 18 month program. officials say these courts target people who have reached close to rock bottom. >> individuals that are at high risk and high need, means high risk to reoffend, they're going to commit on the crime to feed

need, that means they need constant supervision. reporter: under this bill the state would prove half the funding for drug courts with the counties kicking in an equal match. each court must show a working partnership with a rehabilitation center willing to help those in the system. lawmakers who support this program say between the state's general fund and the existing budget the money is there to fund the courts. the superior court in manchester would get a drug court under this plan, a city where officials say there were 101 overdoses last month, with 10 of them fatal. >> even if it helps one person, but again it's shrinking that pool of those who are suffering of addiction. so this is a right step in the right direction. reporter: supporters of this bill say that if it is fast tracked it could be on the governor's desk by february with the first new courts opening sometime around april. andy hershberger, wmur news 9.

election in derry, in fact it was so busy at the polls today they've run out of ballots. jennifer: at last check norly 4,000 brats had been cast and a lot of those will have to be counted by hand. mike cronin live in derry with more on this huge turnout. reporter: a huge turnout indeed. the town clerk says that the hood middle school has been jam packed all day. take a look at this line, this is just for people to get inside and vote. the polls open this morning and still there's a way to cast a ballot and people are holding lines outside the school for and against these budget cuts. in may you may remember the town council passed a controversial budget that cut public safety departments in favor of lowering taxes. residents then filed petitions asking the council to reverse the cuts or hold a special election. ajudge ordered the special election.

the town clerk ordered 125 brats and they rn out this afternoon. so far more than 3800 people have voted and the town had to print out paper ballots which need to be tallied by hand. >> i want to see services restored. i live in the far end of derry where the fire station was closed, and over an eight-minute response time on a good day. >> you see houses up for sale everywhere and a lot of -- i can't afford to pay the taxes, i have to sell my house and move. that's just not right. reporter: so the polls are open until 8:00 tonight and despite having to count hundreds of these ballots by hand, election officials believe that they will have a result later tonight. mike cronin, wmur news 9. tom: right now a vigil being held to remember a manchester woman believed to be dead after a body was discovered inside her home. jennifer: sue hutchinson was last seen three weeks ago and

today investigators hoped an autopsy would positively identify this victim. shelley walcott is live with more. reporter: a vigil for sue hutch i son is being held in front of her part on calef road. you can see there is quite a number of her friends and family here this evening. the gathering was organized by hutchinson's coworkers at head start in manchester where she was a maintenance worker for the last 15 years. a body was found in hutchinson's home sunday night, after someone reported a strange odor. police found a body in a hidden crawl space, hutchinson's roommate steven andrade went missing an the same time she d. police say he killed himself in a massachusetts motel room. friends are stunned. >> we knew something was wrong because she was a person of habit and she took care of her mother, because she's got a mother in the nursing home here, so she's responsible for her. >> we shall remember her always and forever and she will always

a good person. reporter: back out here live, friends and family are here at a vigil at sue hutch i son's home. an investigation into her disappearance is under way. shelley walcott, wmur news 9. jennifer: following his date on murder charges, matthew dion waived his arraignment. dion is accused of killing his parents and setting their home on fire. the court set jury selection for january 19. the trial is expected to take two weeks. the home where the murder took place is expected to be demolished before trial. so prosecutors will use video to show this scene. tom: commitment 2016 now, and new hampshire's place in the presidential selection process is once again coming under fire. this time by the top democrat in the u.s. senate. jennifer: harry reid attacked both new hampshire and iowa in an interview over the weekend and today offered a less than

sincere apology. josh mcelveen takes a closer look. josh: the new hampshire primary has been under attack a lot lately, last month it was the outgoing chair of the republican national committee that warned there are no sacred cows in the process. but now another lame duck is flapping his wings as senator harry reid is drawing fire from new hampshire democrats and republicans with these comments. >> i don't mean to deny great new hampshire or -- iowa. reporter: reid not only offered that gem but also took a shot at granite staters themselves. >> you go to new hampshire, there are not any minorities there and nobody lives there. reporter: in the same interview he aprouded governor hassan's -- but on tuesday both hassan and senator ayotte fired back at reid's comments regarding the first in the nation primary state.

senator reid's disparaging comments about new hampshire are as insulting as they are wrong and an apology would be appropriate. while senator ayotte said harry reid knows nothing about new hampshire. our people or the role we play in vetting candidates on both side of the aisle. and by phone even jeanne shaheen weighed in from her tour of the refugee cries is in europe. >> new hampshire has very diverse opinions and ideas about this country, so i think harry reid is wrong. josh: the fight led to a candidate boycott of -- >> new hampshire's heavily populated and loaded with minorities. so i apologize. josh: the state republican party weighed in, saying it's hypocritical for the governor to criticize reid when he has a super pac that's been spending

tom: tonight five democrats running for president will all be on the same stage. jennifer: the rivalry between hg and bernie sanders is expected to be at the forefront for this first debate. wmur's aixa diaz has more on what we should expect. reporter: only five democrats compared to 15 republicans are seeking the nomination and tonight the underdogs look to stand out. for the first time voters will see hillary clinton and bernie sanders finally face off. clinton appeared at it a union protest rally outside trump's hotel monday. the debate will also include jim webb, martin o'malley and lincoln chaffee. also nearby an extra podium, this photo posted by cnn, just in case vice president biden who

tom: it was a long morning comoo commute for drivers who usually take 93 north through windham. this rollover was the reason why. state police say the driver fell asleep at the wheel. he hit the guard rail and rolled his truck over, it was blocking all northbound lanes. and then another car crashed into it. at this point it's unclear if the driver of the box truck will face any charges. police in danbury are using a creative way to try to track down a marijuana grower. jennifer: after officers pulled out these plants from a wooded area they left a note to the grower that said if your summer project is gone and you'd like to talk to somebody about it, feel free to give us a call and you should have our number, i left a business card. tom: and an attempt to steal a bottle of cologne has landed a manchester man in jail. police say victor alvarado was confronted by loss prevention officer heads tried to leave the story without paying, that's

when he's accused of threatening them with a switch blade and warned them not to call police. he is charged with robbery and criminal threatening with a deadly weapon. after he was caught in a nearby swamp. mike: with the sun now down we'll take a look at some time lapse from earlier in the day in warner, you notice quite a few clouds, couple passing showers, but some partial sunshine. when the sun did poke through the cloud cover that fall color was shining brightly. right now peak foliage in the north country, through the heart of the white mountains into the upper valley, close to peak in the lakes region boo the monadnock region and within the next six to 10 disappoints south and southeast. on satellite imagery a big storm pinwheeling through the great lakes, that is the leading end of cooler air that will build in over the next few days, dropping our temperatures right back to average. as the system builds in tonight, could be a couple widely scattered showers and then beyond the end of the week we

coldest air so far of the season and the coldest since last april moves in for the upcoming weekend. into the early part of monday of next week, so the cooling trend is in the cards right through the upcoming weekend into monday morning. coldest so far this season, that begins saturday night. and lasts into early on monday morning before it warms up again. so it will not be cold forever, we'll start to see a nice bounceback as early as monday afternoon or tuesday. then a few showers from time to time. first this evening and another batch tomorrow afternoon. scattered in nature. just like they are right now. most of them in central and northern new hampshire. not a whole lot in southern zones, but as you can see there are a few widely scr dots of green here on the radar scope, from the monadnock region and building back into the lower part of the merrimack valley. a few more in the great north woods through the heart of the white mountains. bit of a break, then more showers back to the west. some of those will survive the trip up north. again this is all along the

leading edge of slightly cooler air that builds in tomorrow. so temperatures will be about four or five degrees lower than today. right now low 60's up north, upper 50's in plymouth. generally upper 50's in the heart of the lakes region and concord points south and east, well above the average still in the mid to upper 60's. quite a few clouds, built a breeze tonight, that means not all that chilly overnight, 40's and lower 50's. so even though tomorrow will be slightly cooler than today, it doesn't start off all that chilly, as a matter of fact well above the average. but much cooler air sitting back in the great lakes, southern portions of ontario. that builds in here starting over the weekend. here's how it all plays out on the jet stream, notice more blue and green than anything else. compared to what we've had over the past several days and that means temperatures at or below the average starting sunday and into monday. we'll start to see temperatures much lower than what we've seen the past couple of days as early as thursday, friday and the weekend. so where do they line up?

shower and then some clearing overnight. tomorrow we get a little sun, some clouds and a popup shower in the afternoon. notice temperatures, the average high 61, so we're a little above that, it's right at the average for thursday and friday, and then several degrees below on saturday, nowhere close to the average on sunday as it is going to be cold for the second half of the weekend. starts out very chilly monday and then it begins to warm back up. but i failed to say there could be a few flurries up north starting friday night. jennifer: oh, sure, you put that in at the end. tom: all right. could the cubs do in the cardinals? >> right now they're looking pretty good. we'll talk about the baseball playoffs and we'll hear from every new hampshire native on
