erin: now on daybreak, laconia police are looking for a man they say made a threat causing a standoff yesterday afternoon. they don' t know what his name is. a family and hanover can' t drink their well water this morning and officials say a chemical from a former animal burial ground at the dartmouth medical school may be to blame. kevin: as the rain and wind approaches, we are expecting the heaviest of it later today. we will have the timeline ahead. erin: republicans are getting ready for tonight' s presidential debate and the candidates are prepping in a variety of ways as a new national poll shows a bit of a shift at the top.

now, wmur news 9 daybreak. erin: good morning, new hampshire. if you are headed out to the roads anytime soon, you may find some patchy fog out there. kevin skarupa joins us with a look at our forecast. kevin: a building overcast sky eventually setting up the rain and the wind that builds from this afternoon into the evening. for now, temperatures are anywhere in the mid and s and 30' s. don' t let your guard down, the rainfall that moves in for southwest to northeast could be heavy at times by later tonight. even some rumbles of thunder are possible later this evening. temperatures are starting on the upper 40' s to the mid-50' s. expected to be tomorrow.

s organic egg farm on buffam road. firefighters were first called to the scene about 2:30 this morning and found heavy fire in one of the barns. it is not clear if any people or is under control. this is video from 2011 when another fire destroyed a the same farm. for you. a search is underway in the lakes region for a man accused of causing a standoff in laconia. police surrounded a home, but later discovered the man was not there. ray brewer is live in laconia. i understand the police confiscated several items already. ray: that' s right, erin. among those items, a double-barreled shotgun along with bags of ammunition. yesterday afternoon, officers swarmed the downtown neighborhood after a man

with a gun. police surrounded the home and removed a young woman from the building, but later discovered the man was no longer there and likely got out before police arrived. it still made for a tense situation. >> this happened in a very congested part of town. we did set up a very large perimeter to keep people away. >> this individual should be considered armed and dangerous? >> at this point, i would say yes. ray: police don' t know the name of the man they are looking for, partly because the people he was what his full name is. police say they hope to be able later today. they do have an arrest warrant out for the subject -- suspect, but the name on that warrant is reporting live, ray brewer. erin: the republican

gearing up for round three. the third debate is tonight in colorado and donald trump will once again be at center stage. this time, dr. ben carson will be standing next to him. abc' s bazi kanani tells us what to expect. numbers up, please? bazi: a humble donald trump acknowledging ben carson' s rise to first place in iowa and in one new poll in a virtual tie with trump nationally. >> i mean i am second. it is not terrible. but i don' t like being second. it is terrible to me. bazi: ahead of tonight' s debate, carson is not taking the numbers for granted. >> i do realize that it is a marathon. we are still more than a year away from the election.

many consider opioids to be the root cause of the heroin problem. her office has floated a draft proposal within the medical community looking for feedback. suggestions include limiting prescriptions to a five-day supply and reviewing outdated practices. >> the guidelines in the board of medicine rules right now say that the chance of a patient becoming addicted to an opioid is low. we know that that isn' t true. we also know from looking at other states that there are best practices we should be implementing. >> all of this needs to be done with public hearings and to do it appropriately in a process that make sure we have not impacted the ability of doctors to practice medicine. erin: if emergency rules are implemented, there would not be a normal public input period. the rules would stand for six

police in newton are looking for the person they say shot the windshield of a fuel delivery truck while wearing a gorilla mask. police say the driver was near the intersection of easley crossing and south main street when someone wearing a mask in the back seat of an oncoming car fired a bb gun. the windshield did not crack and the driver was not hurt. a massachusetts man is accused of choking a five-year-old girl in exeter. 19-year-old solomon martinez turned himself in and is charged with two counts of second-degree assault. he is related to the girl and choked her while visiting last week. the owners of a home near the dartmouth college medical school have been told to stop jerking the water from their well because chemicals from a former animal burial ground on the campus may have seeped in. last month, a nearby private

kevin: wednesday morning, october 28. another chilly start to the day. we go from the upper ranges of the teens to the 30' s. eventually some rain this afternoon. some of the rain heavy tonight. erin: thank you. support is rolling in for a local little league team after their clubhouse and concession stand were both vandalized over the weekend. last night, the community helps the bedford little league cleanup from $5,000 worth of damage. the manchester monarchs, new hampshire fisher cats, primary bank, elliot hospital and cmc combined to donate about $3500. bedford'

erin: police in colorado say a woman disappeared well apparently sleepwalking. 19-year-old taylor gammel wandered away from home, got on a bus, and went to her uncle' s home nine miles away all while asleep. her uncle finally called police to say she was safe, but officers are still investigating. the largest drugstore chain in the u.s. is getting a whole lot bigger. walgreens is buying right aid -- rite aid. the deal combines two of the three largest drugstore chains in the country. walgreens says rite aid stores

the deal will close in the second half of next year. the cost of heating your home with firewood is going up. more hardwood is being sold to build hydro fracking sites in pennsylvania. the increased demand is driving up prices in parts of new england, meaning you can expect to pay an average of $325 per cord. just in time for halloween, an incredible discovery in boston. crews working on the mbta project that government center found these old costumes rolled up beneath the blue line platforms. they were found in a small, hollow section of concrete that was poured more than 60 years ago. it is not clear exactly where these costumes came from. kevin: i think i probably would have been a little creeped out.

rainfall to push in from the west. the rainfall will be heaviest this afternoon and this evening. we will get into these pockets of rain with these heavier down doors and a couple of rumbles of thunder to go with it. we get beyond lunchtime and all bets off for south western parts of the state. temperatures either side of 20 in the north. we will warm sufficiently enough by the time the rainfall arrives that it will be in liquid form this afternoon. the air mass that comes in after the rainfall pulls through his right here, but then you will see the cold front back to the west coming thereafter. we stopped here at 1:00 and, i suspect by this point there will likely be some showers in the southwestern parts of the state starting to make their way in. this is likely an hour or two behind what reality will be.

any sort of slow going out there on the roads for travel will likely be confined after the evening commute and through the overnight hours tonight. this is where we start the day tomorrow. the front comes through late in the day with a chance of a shower. once that goes by, it does look like we start to cool off by tomorrow evening and eventually fair skies by friday. both nights look good for trick-or-treating, friday and saturday night. the brees on friday will start to diminish by the time we get to friday evening. temperatures are close to the average almost all the way through your seven-day forecast. a lot of sunshine for saturday, quite a few clouds on sunday -- the risk of a shower, but nothing to cancel your outdoor plans.

crews found heavy fire in one of the barnes when they arrived. the fire is now under control. there is no word on whether any people or animals were hurt. this is the same farm where a fire destroyed a processing plant in december 2011. the building was under construction at the time. a search is underway for a man police say set off a tense standoff in laconia yesterday afternoon. while police have yet to make an arrest, they did confiscate a shotgun and several banks of ammunition from the apartment where he prompted the standoff. authorities do not know the man' s name. ray brewer joins us live in laconia with the latest. ray: police say that shotgun they confiscated is what had them so concerned. not only did the suspect have that gun, but he also was allegedly threatening to use it. investigators left 20 jewett street with a double-barreled

the items were taken into evidence following a tent afternoon. -- tense afternoon. >> we attempted to make contact with it -- the individuals. we were informed that one was argued with a long rifle gun. ray: after detaining and removing a young woman from the scene, the belknap special operations group try to determine if the suspect was still inside. after getting no results, officers went inside and determine the suspect was gone, most likely making his escape before officers arrived on the scene. the threat of the shotgun kept police and bystanders at a distance. >> this happened in a very congested part of town. we did set up a very large parameter to keep you will and traffic away while the investigation was ongoing. >> should this individual be considered armed and dangerous? >> at this point, i would say yes. >> i was terrified for the

it was really close. ray: police say the people the suspect was in the home with don' t know the suspect' s full name. police are hoping to be able to release more information later today. reporting live, ray brewer. erin: police in winchester also dealt with a standoff yesterday. this morning, that suspect is due in court. officers were called to a home on jones road for the report of a gunshot. it was fired during a disagreement between neighbors that led to 35-year-old joseph legere barricading himself inside his house for about four hours. he eventually surrendered and was taken into custody without incident. he will be arraigned on charges of reckless conduct with a deadly weapon and criminal threatening. a new jail program is moving forward that is already getting results for heroin addiction in

the county delegation met yesterday to discuss a new community corrections center modeled after one in sullivan county that helps provide intensive addiction treating for offenders. it would have 30 treatment beds and 34 work release beds aimed at making sure people do not relapse and reoffend. >> the concept is that there is a punitive component, but there is also a focus on reeducation and job skills and moving the person or transitioning them back into the community. erin: the new community corrections center would cost about $7 million. a lawyer representing one of the defendants in a 1988 double murder is hoping to get his client' s bail reduced. anthony barnaby and a codefendant, david kaplan, are charged with the murders of brenda warner and charlene ranstrom. barnaby was tried three times resulting in three hung juries.

manchester police are trying to track down two men they say try to steal a young woman' s purse. she was walking near the rite aid on elm street when a man quickly approached her from behind. she tried to cross the street, but a second man jumped in front of her. they try to grab her purse which was draped around her neck. she managed to fight back and off. anyone with any information is urged to contact the manchester police department. hillary clinton is returning to the granite state today. she will speak at an event this afternoon. she will also attend the carroll county democratic committee' s grover cleveland dinner in bartlett tonight. former secretary of state madeleine albright will be in new hampshire next week campaigning on behalf of clinton. the republican presidential

kevin: i don' t see anything on the maps hinting at that. tomorrow, we will likely be above 70. temperatures are still chilly. we are anywhere from the upper teens to the lower 30' s and southern areas. a little bit of patchy fog to be had. you can see that from upper elevations. you are also noticing that very pretty sky, that red sky in the morning, sailors take warning -- you will notice that rainfall is on the doorstep down to our south and west. filtered sunshine giving way to thicker cloud cover. by lunchtime in southwestern parts of the state and thereafter anywhere away from the monadnock region looking like a likely possibility. the heaviest of this rainfall looks to be later tonight. the wind will start picking up today out of the east and southeast. that will be around tonight gusting at 25-30 miles per hour.
