a tradition known as the senior salute. good evening, i'm tom griffith. jennifer: i'm jennifer vaughn. before learning his sentence, owen labrie heard not only from the victim herself but her poorns too who focused on what they called his cruel intentions. wmur's andy hershberger begins our live team coverage to you from outside the courthouse in concord. reporter: labrie was sentenced to one year in jail and will serve up to three years probation, but the 20-year-old will still remain free while his case is under appeal. the teen-age victim in this case gave her statement to the court through videotape, it talked about how her life was forever changed when she was sexually assaulted by owen labrie. >> made me feel like i didn't belong on this planet. and that i would be better off dead. reporter: labrie was convicted of five charges related to the sexual assault of a 15-year-old, while both were students at the

in may of 2014. the assault took place during a school tradition called the senior salute where upper class men ask younger students on dates. labrie's lawyer asked the court to impose probation saying the young man's life is already ruined. >> owen decided to engage in senior salute. he has enormous remorse forever having done that. reporter: but the victim's mother said her daughter and her entire family has last more than anyone could ever possibly imagine. the teen-age victim told the judge that she suffered emotional and physical retaliation when she tried to return to school and will forever carry scars of this experience. >> he has denied all responsibility and has shown no

he did to me and how he took something so precious away from me. reporter: the judge said today he felt that labrie was neither an angel nor a devil and felt that he sentenced him accordingly. andy hershberger, wmur news 9. jennifer: after the sentencing both sides addressed the media outside the courtroom. wmur's heather hamel continues our live team coverage with reaction to that. reporter: well, the defense wasn't surprised by the sentence, they say they did ask for probation, but they say one year in jail is certainly a victory. now, they disagree with the prosecution who said that labrie never showed remorse, they say in fact he is remorseful but won't contradict his testimony and is standing by truth, they say the incident was consensual, something the judge didn't even agree with and said so. the prosecution was also satisfied with the sentence and commended the victim for going forward with this saying that this is a very difficult process. she was not in the courtroom
6:03 pm
today, instead home with her family, as is owen labrie tonight where the defense said he's receiving a lot of support from family and friend. the prosecution says it is the law to be released pending the appeals process, it's not something they're happy with. >> i have concerns about him being released without supervision, i will say that fairly, but again i had a duty to the court and i had to point that out. he has a curfew. he is free to move about. >> i think he's going to deal with it the say he has been, turn to his family, loved ones, he's a strong young man trying to make the best out of a difficult situation. reporter: a attorney for the victim's family says they too are satisfied with the sentence hour they say that the family entrusted their daughter's safety to st. paul's and they failed. heather hamel, wmur news 9.

6:05 pm
>> he has put more substantive thoughts and ideas on these than all the other candidates. josh: but he has struggled and pains to a cycle that's been more about flash than real ideas. there are debate last night was a good example of it. there wasn't any substantive the questions around their kitchen table. very few things that were real. josh: and the hoard of peed yeah in portsmouth did little to redeem itself professionally. >> this is how we're going to campaign. josh: as bush was repeatedly interrupted with reporters stepping all over themselves trying to take a kill shot. >> hang on a second. man, calm down. reporter: somehow bush kept his composure and pledged that over the next couple months he will break through all the noise. >> here's the deal, i'm campaigning harder than anybody else, i have a proven record. there is no one that has the proven record in business and in government that i have. and i'm going to share that with
6:06 pm
people. josh: bush will be spending a lot of time the new hampshire as he tries to reener scroiz his slim enter trimmer campaign. after this to-day trip he'll be back again hex week for a multiday bus tour around the state. tom: it day two of hillary clinton's latest visit to the granite state. the campaign trail taking her to the north country. wmur's jennifer crompton was at her first stop. reporter: hillary clinton started out by telling the crowd here in berlin that they would have been better off watching the world series last night than the g.o.p. debate, which she called a swing and a miss. clinton appeared at a candidate forum on the berlin campus of new hampshire community college where she fielded concerns about the cost of health care and prescription drugs, college debt, and social security, calling the notion of raising the age for collecting it elitist. and she assured the crowd that a

more good paying jobs. >> i had a great conversation a few minutes ago with the mayor about the way that this community is trying to reinvent itself through energy production. but you can't do it on your own, you need a partner in washington, you need somebody who is actually going to talk with you, listen to you and then roll up her sleeves and get to work for you. reporter: she was also asked who she might choose as a running mate. clinton told the crowd that she'd rather just win the nomination first and worry about that later. jennifer crompton, wmur news 9. tom: straight ahead at 6:00. jennifer: a new tool coming soon in the state's battle against heroin, the announcement this afternoon about turning this old furniture store into a recovery center. >> it's our last haunted thursday of the season and it's a mild one. we're going to show you quite a haunted haven here, coming up. hayley: the winds have been
6:08 pm
spooky today, extremely gusty, even causing some power outages. jamie: it's home town hero thursday, we have a gun slinging

tom: a new recovery center is coming to wilson street in manchester to help deal with the heroin epidemic. a ground breaking held this afternoon at the former hoyt's furniture store. jennifer: the 37,000 square foot building will house hope for new hampshire, a recovery center in manchester. kristen carosa is live with more. reporter: the new center is set to open in just a few months. the first floor will house a recovery center and the upper floors will offer housing. let's show you some video from that ground breaking earlier this afternoon.
6:11 pm
the building is being sold by the longo family to two members of the community in the private sector. hope for new hampshire will be renting the space. everyone involved says this facility is the missing link they've been waiting for. hope for new hampshire will be first to rent space here, but the hope is to team up with other organizations to offer even more to its clients. >> this is a vision that many, many people had for many, many years and it's justifiably coming to fruition. >> on behalf of my family and in memory of my dad, his legacy and, he'd be very proud of everybody here today. reporter: it was an emotional day for the longo family as they sell this building, but they say they could not be more proud of the way the building is being carried on. kristen carosa, wmur news 9. night. hayley: yes, and did you wear the shorts today?
6:12 pm
tom: i wouldn't put anybody through you that. hayley: well, could you have temperatures were in the 70's in a lot of spots. but it will be cold tonight.

do you think when you are president you'll be paid as much as if you were a man-male... this is one of the jobs where they have to pay you the same. but there are so many examples where that doesn't happen. i'm going to do everything i can to make sure every woman in every job gets paid the same... ...as the men who are doing that job. r i'm hillary clinton p
6:14 pm
tom: prepare to be scared in this week's haunted thursday.
6:15 pm
jennifer: a haunted house in kensington our viewers say is one of their favorites. let's check in with mike haddad mike? mike: yes, it's eerily mild out here, we're in kensington. joining me now, the owner of this haunted haven, jeff display here. tell us all about it. >> well, we've been heavily decorating for about 12 years now, and it's a passion, it's a love of ours, the whole family enjoys it. we do it for the public, we want to instill memories of people so this is what it's all about, we buy the decorations, set them up and away we go, we have a blast with it, we love it. mike: how long has it taken you to set up this display? >> this takes me a couple months to set up. i would like to have about three months ideally. twisty! no, no, no! mike: we've got a clown that
6:16 pm
seems a little bit out of sorts here. >> could someone feed him, please? mike: but it takes you a long time to get this all going. >> absolutely. if i had six months it could be perfect, but we'll deal with the time we have and hopefully everyone enjoys it and appreciates it. mike: and it is free to the public, because even though you're not commercial yet, people can stop by and take part in this. >> yes, absolutely. it is free. when it comes to some point when we actually have to charge, then it will become work and i'm not sure, we'll see how it goes. mike: all right, thank you very much, i wish you a very happy but haunted and scary halloween. >> thank you, wmur, for our continued support, and go patriots. mike: you got it, you heard that. what about this weather, talk about changes, we've gone from warm and wet to windy and do we ever get walk to cool again? haley? hayley: we do, in fact, and right in time for halloween. so it will feel a little bit more like halloween instead of like august it did today with temperatures in the lower 70's
6:17 pm
so here's the spooky weekend forecast. tomorrow some festivities, the kids dressing up for school, sunny but cooler, highs in tupper 40's in the northern part of the state, 50's in the southern part of the state. for halloween itself mostly sunny skies, we'll have increasing clouds late in the day, but no problems for trick or treat time. we'll fall through the 40's for the trick or treaters for temperatures, so maybe a layer or two underneath the costume but not overly cold. then on sunday, which is november 1st of course, we'll have scattered showers moving through and temperatures in the 50's. a remarkable turn we're about to make here. look at the highs we got to today, 76 degrees on october 29th in dover, that's what you reached there. auburn 75. we reached 75 as well in exeter. amherst 74. brentwood 74 too. the colder air starting to seep down from canada, so those of of you up north already feeling the effects.
6:18 pm
you've fallen into the 50's. 60's across the rest of the southern tier of the state, about 65 degrees in manchester. the winds, they have been howling over the past couple hours, even causing some damage, some tree limbs down and power lines down, especially reported in pelham and out in cheshire county too. the wind are still gusty, especially in the upper valley and into plymouth, 22 miles per hour. the wind gusts at plymouth and laconia as of yet, that's the colder air starting to come down behind this system. the rain is pretty much done with, there are just a couple of spotty showers and there may be a few scattered showers through the evening here, but those are going to start to clear away along with the clouds too. then the cold will set in, as this low pressure system lifts up toward the north and east and drags down that colder air behind it. so overnight tonight, a few lingering cloud and showers especially up north and there may be higher elevation snow showers early tomorrow morning, but the rest of us, bright and sunny for our friday, and
6:19 pm
highs only in the 40's and 50's tomorrow. tomorrow night will be a chilly one if you're going out to the friday night football games. it going to be cold with the temperatures falling into the 30's in a lot of spots, but saturday for halloween, it looks nice, bright and sunny and a couple degrees warmer. tonight showers and clear skies and cool. temperatures up north 40's. central and southern new hampshire in the 50's. the wind will still be moving around a little bit. as we talked about the patriots a couple second ago, go pats, 55 degrees, a mild october game for them taking on the miami dolphins. breezy and mild the forecast and dry there. 40's up north tomorrow, 50's in the southern part of the state. and as for halloween, spook-tacular, then on sunday a few scattered showers and remember to put your clocks back and maybe check your smoke detectors. tom: good idea.
6:20 pm
jamie: we're going to talk thursday night football, we'll hear from patriots and dolphins, plus we have home town hero and u.n.h. football back at home. jeb bush was a very strong governor, probably the strongest governor in the history of the state of florida. he was a young guy and i think there were some folks in the legislature that thought they might be able to run over him. that didn't happen. one tax cut wasn't enough- he had to do more. it wasn't enough to have 15,000 kids with school choice in florida, he wanted to have 100,000 kids. if he didn't like a project, it was going to be vetoed. it didn't matter if you were a republican. it didn't matter if you were his best friend. he said: 'this is where we're going, this is how we're going to reform state government...' every politician comes in talking about making change,
6:21 pm
not much change. but governor bush made a lot of changes. he got the nickname if he saw something in the budget that he thought violated his conservative principles, you could guarantee it was he vetoed a bunch of my stuff and i was the senate president. the message to washington, d.c., is 'get ready...' because there will be change. nright to rise usa is responsible
6:22 pm
jamie: game night for the new england patriots, they host the miami dolphins at 8:25 tonight. tom brady 8-0 all tile on thursday games.
6:23 pm
patriots favored by 8.5 points. >> moving the ball, a lot of activity, as far as everybody, everybody wants to make big plays. >> a political ybility team, we've had had some success against them. and it's all about -- jamie: this weeks hole town hero is a state record holder. reporter: steven heldberg is the quarterback for the st. thomas football team, a team that with a win on friday night will finish as the only undefeated team in division two. last year he broke the record touchdown passes in a single season. >> we all have our eyes on the goal this year, which is winning the championship. last year was more of just maying the game and all about winning games, but this year we really have our eye on the prize.
6:24 pm
1300 yards and 22 touchdowns, two ahead of this time last year. but breaking his own report is not a priority. >> it's not what i think about. obviously i want to throw touchdowns, but i don't think like that. reporter: the saints have scored less than 40 points only once this season, something he credits to his many offensive weapons. >> trevor martin, tom bouchard, i don't think i can get any luckier than with those four games and they've been awesome, i know i can trust them any time and they can make plays if i get it to them. reporter: the senior also playing baseball and basketball, but plans to play football in college. he's been talking to schools like wpi and colby as well as some, but says a post gr year is also a possibility. steven heldberg, this weeks home town hero.
6:25 pm
and bedford today, bedford in white. that gave bed information a 2-0 lead. the save by emma fay coming up. fay makes an excellent save. bedford was able to hold on for the 2-0 win. we'll have field hockey final four action in division one and two tonight at 11:00. and friday night football, this is the final week of the regular season, it is the halloween edition of friday night football, and it's huge. 20 games all over the schedule, pinkerton and exeter is a huge game, you can follow it at fnf wmur. cab imagine all the people in costume tomorrow night, it will be fun. tom: thank you. tune in for "new hampshire chronicle" that follows "world news." we'll see you back here tonight right after" how to get
