s school graduate owen labrie will serve a year in jail in connection to the sexual assault of an underclassman as part of a tradition known as the senior salute. good evening, i' m shelley walcott. tom: i' m tom griffith. before learning his punishment, owen labrie heard from the wmur' s kristen carosa has more from today' s sentencing. kristen: the victim in this case statement before labrie was sentenced. she spoke about how this has impacted her life and why she is fighting so hard for justice. >> to this day i still feel numb. >> appearing by video, the girl who was sexually assaulted by her st. paul' s classmate owen labrie recalls the day it >> i will never understand why the offender raped me. >> labrie has been sentenced to one year in jail and 5 years of probation. the victim says what labrie did

suffering. >> what he did to me made me feel like i didn' t belong on this planet and that i would be better off dead. >> she says she has trouble sleeping and can' t concentrate at school. >> any time i am touched unexpectedly my entire body jolts. >> she admits it' s been hard to share this story but it' s one that has to be told. >> why i am so adamantly pushing for justice for myself is because i am not only pushing for myself but for others as well. >> after the sentencing, victim advocates and representatives of the family applauded her strength. >> the public has been exposed to an undeniable truth in this case which is that predators don' t come in only one mold, they can be scholar athletes, community leaders, teachers, parents and friends.

>> the family is very satisfied that the judge understood who the defendant is, understood that he is not who he reports to be. >> labrie will have to register as a sex offender he can apply to be removed from the registry 15 years after serving his sentence. >> i think he is going to deal with this the way he has been dealing with the case the whole time, he is going to turn to his family, friends and loved ones, they will be giving him a lot of support, he is a strong young man, he is trying to make the best of what is obviously a tough situation. kristen: labrie will not begin serving his sentence right away. he' s allowed to remain free on bail while he appeals his conviction. kristen carosa, wmur news 9. shelley: jurors in labrie' s trial reached a mixed verdict, finding him guilty of a felony charge of using a computer to lure a minor for a sex act, as well as three misdemeanor sexual assault charges. however, the jury acquitted him on three felony sex assault charges a distinction that legal , experts say was important to

>> it seems that the judge was, he was certain to make sure that everyone knew that he was sentencing mr labrie on the offenses for which he was convicted, not on the offenses for which he was acquitted. and i think perhaps the state' s argument was more focused on the offenses for which he was acquitted. shelley: legal experts say the appeals process in this case could take from 18 months to a year. tom: in commitment 2016, the campaign trail took hillary clinton to the north country today. the democratic presidential candidate held a rural economic roundtable in littleton this evening. our stephanie woods was there, and reports that clinton attacked the issues but not her fellow candidates. >> a day after the contentious 3rd republican presidential debate, hillary clinton spoke at littleton high school and went toe-toe with one young granite stater.
