stephanie: now on news 9, a driver has life-threatening injuries after being thrown out of his car in a high-speed crash. >> it' s a disease that is taking the lives of way too many people. stephanie: opioid overdoses were the focus of an annual medical conference. doctors had no idea when they chose the topic last year how urgent the issue would become. hayley: scattered showers and clouds tonight will usher in chillier air for the second half of the weekend. how cool it' s going to be for our sunday coming up. stephanie: and police need your help to find the man who held up a local bank. >> no one covers new hampshire like we do. now, wmur news 9 tonight. stephanie: the salem man is fighting for his life after being thrown from his car. good evening and thanks for joining us. i' m stephanie woods. a police officer spotted that driver near main and hampstead . by the time she caught up, he found a smashed car and the driver thrown to the ground. wmur' s mike cronin talked to investigators in salem. mike: police say the man was driving more than 90 miles an hour in an area where there are several homes could salem police say the driver sped past an officer on main street near hampstead road. the officer tried to pull the car over to quickly lost sight of it. the driver of the 1997 lexus went off the road, hit several trees, and crashed just down the road. he was thrown out of the car and found unconscious on the ground. he was taken in the hospital, then flown to a boston hospital with life-threatening injuries. police had to close that stretch of the road for several hours.

>> how to help people come out offer them something more than t use again. kristen: this doctor is an and president of the new hampshire medical society. addiction. this is very relevant for us numbers are staggering across the country and our state is a standard. kristen: medical professionals and law-enforcement hope to learn from each other about drug a diction and the best way of addressing the crisis. this expert from ontario, canada, was this year' s keynote speaker and he says prevention is key. >> we asked that physicians become the mentors and leaders in this, and as a group we have enough training to do so and we need to get the training to leave the way. >> what is striking to me as i thought i knew a lot about opiate addiction, and i am learning so much today. kristen: dr. thomas sherman says the state needs to optimize available funding and medicaid

>> now, meteorologist hayley lapoint and your storm watch 9 forecast. hayley: we had a mixer of sunshine and clouds and now it looks like we have at least some clouds and portsmouth for the nice evening to be walking out in market square. there is a live looked in dublin, where the concept killed in a little bit more there. there could be some spotty showers overnight. it should be in the form of rain showers. but when you get north of the notches come there is the threat of a couple of snow showers as we go through the overnight hours here.
