now, wmur news 9 tonight. >> where 48 of my brothers, we stood together against 200. stephanie: as we approach veterans day, an american hero shares a story about the day he was almost killed by enemy fighters. good evening, i' m stephanie woods. medal of honor recipient staff sergeant ryan pitts was honored by a group that goes the extra mile to help vets. wmur' s mike cronin was there to hear his powerful story. mike: with veterans day just a few days away, hundreds of people came together here at the radisson in nashua on saturday night to salute our soldiers and to raise money for veterans and their families. inside a packed ballroom in the gate city, more than 500 people raised money for those who have served. tom tessier: we' re trying to raise money to help our veterans and their families who fall between the cracks if you will, with dignity. we' re not a handout organization. we' re a hands up organization.

mike: the 4th annual salute our soldiers dinner was hosted by veterans count nashua a program of easter seals. sy mahfuz: suicide rate amongst our soldiers in new hampshire is the lowest of anywhere in the united states per capita because of this program. mike: in four years the , organization has raised more than the goal for this dinner $1 million. was to raise $400,000. sy mahfuz: 90 cents on every dollar goes to where it' s supposed to go. mike: the event featured several speakers including new hampshire native ryan pitts a former army staff sergeant and recipient of the medal of honor. >> i' m here because my brothers made it possible for me to be here. mike: in 2008 despite being badly wounded pitts fought off , enemy attackers in afghanistan and guided air attacks. >> the only way that i can describe the amount of fire coming down, it would be like trying to get out of your car and dodge raindrops. it seemed unfathomable.

police are still working to figure out exactly what led up to the crash. in the hospital tonight with life-threatening injuries. around 3:00 this morning police driving more than 90 miles an hour on main street. over, but lost sight of the ' 97 lexus. just down the road, police say the driver hit several trees and crashed. he was flown to a boston hospital. >> it' s a heavily settled area, several residents, multi family this vehicle easily could' ve ended up in someone' s bedroom, living room, kitchen. we' re pretty lucky at this point that it was only the driver that was affected by this. stephanie: police are still investigating whether alcohol or drugs played any role in the crash. a man going the wrong way on columbus avenue in rochester nearly hit a police cruiser had on last night.

they say justin goodwin then crashed and tried to run away, but was quickly caught. he faces several charges, including driving under the influence of drugs. the new hampshire medical society held a conference today focused on addiction and substance abuse. medical professionals and members of law enforcement hope to learn from each other about drug addiction and the best way to address the crisis. as the number of drug overdose deaths continues to climb in new hampshire, those on the front mind said they need to find a solution. >> i think it is going to get a lot of traction and it needs to because these are our family members, our children. and there is no one fix and there is nothing that is going to take it to 90 and bring it down to zero. it is never going to go away completely. >> the most important message i gave today is that we as physicians need to become the mentors and the leaders in this and we haven' t had enough training to do and we need that training so that we can lead the way.

stephanie: recovering addict' s also joined the discussion. newton police are warning about the spread of the synthetic drug spice. they say someone called 911 after the men used the drug and was screaming uncontrollably. police say the man had used a vaporizer to inhale the drug. a manchester man faces charges after putting a fake inspection sticker on his car. after an officer pulled over kane duquette, police say he admitted to making the sticker himself. police say while they were arresting him, they found marijuana. he also faces a drug charge. right now, new hampshire is working to complete several road construction projects before winter limits what crews can do. tomorrow night, news 9 investigates the state of highways in new hampshire. crews quickly repaired that huge sink hole on 93 north over the summer. but could it happen again? the department of transportation says if they want to fix the problem long-term, they need to have adequate drainage. bill boynton: the best way to have effective drainage and prevent those kind of failures that we'
