ordering a study of that idea. what do you think? sean: this could create a whole load of confusion going between states. erin: we are asking common questions about winter weather. sean: meteorologist hayley lapoint has a look at one of the dangers on icy roads. hayley: have you ever seen these signs while driving around new hampshire? they are all over the place. many vehicle crashes have been caused by slippery conditions on bridges and overpasses. it may not be something you think about while driving, but it can be very deceiving. why exactly do bridges freeze first? here is the answer and why you always need to be more cautious when crossing bridges in the winter. cold air surrounds the surface of a bridge. it goes over the top and underneath the bottom. bridges lose heat from both sides. bridges have no way to trap any heat. they will ice up as soon as the
6:46 am
air temperature decreases to 32 degrees. roads, as you can see down here, those have ground underneath them and they retain their heat a little bit more. secondly, bridges are built with steel and concrete, both of which are good heat conductors. any heat moves through the surface, where the heat is lost, and the airflow around it is retaining the cooler air. that happens when the temperatures cool. roads are mostly made from asphalt, which is a poor conductor of heat, and that lessens the rate of heat loss from the road. bottom line is you want to be safe when you pass over bridges. if you are passing over a bridge, slow the speed when you are approaching it because it could be slippery and you don' t know it. if you happen to slide along the surface, don' t hit the brakes, keep the steering wheel straight. that is the best thing we can tell you to keep you straight. we want your winter weather questions. send them to was that wmur.com or facebook us. i' m meteorologist hayley

6:49 am
northwestern areas could catch sunny breaks. for the rest of us, the showers dry up late this morning, early this afternoon, and then partial clearing. any early breaks of sun giving way to clouds and then showers run in through the afternoon and pull away on friday morning. a drier breeze sets up for friday afternoon and then the breeze turns. any showers that try to develop, white mountains, great north woods could be in the form of snow that will set up fair skies and a pretty good breeze out of the northwest for both days of the weekend with highs in the 40' s to lower 50' s. today, we should be well into the 40' s and near 50. we will eventually see partial clearing later on tonight with temperatures dropping up into the -- off into the 30' s and toward 40.
