[captioning performed by the national captioning institute, which is responsible for its caption content and accuracy. visit ncicap.org] >> no one covers new hampshire like we do. now wmur news 9 tonight. stephanie: dropping temperatures could bring snow flurries to the seacoast tonight. you are taking a live look in portsmouth where it is just raining now, but that will soon change. thanks for joining us. i am stephanie woods. meteorologist hayley lapoint tells us who will see some flakes. hayley: it' s going to be the immediate coastline. that' s where it will be cold enough long enough to get any of this snow going. some of ice might see a couple spits or flakes coming down. what is happening, we have a frontal boundary that stalled off the coast line, and then cold air is coming in behind it, and we are getting a transition zone on the back edge. that will mean communities from rochester and just to the east of nashua and manchester could

get a light dusting of snow overnight, only on the rooftops and the cars and a grassy surfaces, nothing on the roadways. the system pulls out. you will not even know this happened. on monday, temperatures, much colder. that' s the big story after the snow showers tonight and tomorrow. i will have the full forecast in a couple minutes. stephanie: the snow guns are running tonight at loon mountain. ski season is almost here, and trails are scheduled to open in a few days. mike: grab your skis and snowboards. another season begins this week at loon mountain. right now, there is no snow at the base of the mountain, but snow guns are ready. staff are helping to get them ready in the coming days. winter is coming to loon mountain. before skiers hit the slopes, lo

needs to make the slopeso. the compressors were fired up this weekend as a crew of about a dozen began making snow saturday. >> the air compressors are compressing the air, and we have a large water pumping system that will pump water up the mountain. mike: sunday night, workers focused on 11 trails beginning at the summit where it is coldest and working towards lower elevations. >> we' ve been preparing for the season since we shut down the system at the end of last season. literally nine months of maintenance and preparation for this weekend. >> we' ve got new hampshire' s most powerful snowmaking system, and temperatures are getting consistently cold. mike: if temperatures remain cold, loon will open wednesday. >> it' s closer to thanksgiving than we would normally like, but anytime in november is nice. mike: while the mountain will open slightly later than last year, snow makers are excited to kick off the winter season, and they hope to have another successful year.

charges of kidnapping and assault and battery of a child. to commitment 2016 runner donald trump is igniting a media firestone with a comment he made on abc. calling into "this week," the real estate mogul refused to rule out the possibility of a third-party run for the white house. this comes after trump signed a pledge in september 2 not to run as an independent. this morning, he says he has to be treated fairly by the republican party. supporters say by not ruling out a run, trump is guarding against internal party attacks. >> he didn' t say he would. he just left it out there because he was asked, and he can use that as a club on the rnc not to play dirty politics with him. stephanie: supporters say they don' t believe trump will have to launch a third-party candidacy because they expect he will be the republican nominee. martin o' malley surprised his

south carolina senator lindsey graham started his day diner in manchester. candidate shook hands over breakfast. later, he was in tilton for a diner. he held a town hall meeting in laconia this afternoon. a new abc poll shows senator bernie sanders is gaining momentum after joe biden announced he will not run for president. hillary clinton is still 26% ahead of sanders, down from 39% in the republican race, not much change. donald trump remains the front runner with 32% of support, and dr. ben carson is a strong second with 22%. terrorism has suddenly become one of the most important issues in the presidential election. 28% of people in the poll say 33% say it' s the economy.

thursday, just days after the attack in paris. 75% of people polled say they are closely following the campaigns, the highest level of attention at this point in a presidential race since 1987. thanksgiving is just four days away, and charitable efforts are kicking into high gear. at rochester high school, volunteers put together the ingredients for more than 60 dinners. these meals will be going out to families and the community who are in need. >> we help out year-round. that serves the students. all year round, we can take care of the kids. they can get free snacks. they can have food to take home with them when they need it. at thanksgiving, we take care of the whole family. stephanie: organizers say the bulk of this year' s donations comes from the student body, and a local church put together 16 baskets. thanksgiving eve was bad, aaa says --

authorities say the paris fugitive was not one of them. europe' s capital city remains on lockdown for a second day. the government extended the highest alert for brussels into the start of the work week. brussels schools and subsystems will remain school -- remain closed tomorrow. in paris tonight, dozens of protective medical outfits are missing from a hospital. the suits are the type you see doctors wearing when they treat patients with ebola. last week, the french government warned of the possibility of a bioterror attack. this weekend, the midwest was hit with its first major winter storm, leaving snow and freezing temperatures in its wake. low visibility and icy roads made for tough travel conditions across the region, sending drivers skidding off the roads. illinois was one of the hardest hit areas. parts of chicago saw as much as

16 inches of road -- snow, making it the snowiest november in nearly 100 years. nearly a year ago, new hampshire was plunged into darkness in thanksgiving week. a powerful winter storm knocked out power to over 100,000 customers, and it took days for it to be fully restored. we asked meteorologist josh judge to take a look at what is being done to improve response during the next major outage. >> the thanksgiving storm underscored the need for all of the investments we' ve been making the last several years. josh: one of those investments by ever source, the state' s largest power provider, is already online. >> it includes a state-of-the-art incident command center so we can get better information more quickly and be able to respond more quickly to outages when they happen. we have had a lot of major storms in the last eight or nine

changes, investments. josh: last year' s thanksgiving week storm wasn' t a surprise, so many were able to plan their travel. the snow moved in from west to east on wednesday morning, and before you knew it, everything was turned white and piling up quickly. as much as 12 to 18 inches fell, several inches even reached the coast. concord set a record for that date, receiving 10.3 inches on wednesday alone, adding a couple more in the days that followed. the coast temperatures hovered mostly in the 30' s, it fell is an extremely evening -- extremely heavy paste-like snow that toppled trees and made a

roads slick, leading to numerous accidents involving utility poles. by thursday morning, it had become the state' s fourth-largest power outage in history. over 274,000 customers lost service during the event affecting almost 40% of the state' s population who were mashing potatoes by flashlight, cooking turkeys on the grill, and watching tv on smartphones. power companies scramble to repair lines. crews were brought in from as far away as alabama. by sunday, day five, most customers were back online, and while ever source says that was sooner than projected, many customers were frustrated because it fell during the long holiday weekend. a report concluded that while many things were done right during the outage, utilities need to improve weather forecast gathering practices, review how they pre-stage repair crews before storms, and how to handle widespread repair work during a major holiday. ever source is pulling out a new

as with much of part of the southeastern state, there are showers and mixed precipitation going on. as you get to the east a manchester, what is happening is we have a stalled front right off the coast line. look at this heavy rain we are missing out on, probably a good thing, but on the backside, there is cold air working in. on the very back edge of the storm system, you can see where it, there is changeover happening come in that is when -- where there could be snow accumulation happening as we go through the overnight hours. you can see where there is some snow falling, in milton, wolfeboro, even closer to the seacoast. we still have some rain reported in portsmouth and hampton. there could be little bit of mixing going on in these communities here, and this line will continue to move off closer to the seacoast as we push

this whole system has this sharp cut off, so some of you see nothing tonight other than the clouds. it' s just going to be a few communities in the southeastern part of the state. for the rest of us, the big story is going to be the cold. we have much cooler air on the way. air. in this cold pool of air, on the way for us, and that will keep temperatures very cool as we had over the next couple days. 41 degrees in laconia. it' s 42 in concord. we have this cold air arriving very quickly, so that is what is changing over some of the rain showers to the snow showers. on futurecast, you will see what happens. this is 3:00 a.m., and most of the snow shower action is done with, except right at the immediate coastline. i wouldn' t be surprised if some

of you get a little bit of a coating, especially on some of the rooftops, the cars, grassy surfaces. this whole thing will pull away. 8:00 tomorrow morning, back to full sunshine. tomorrow, it' s going to feel downright brisk with winds out of the northwest, bringing down this colder air, so despite the sunshine, we are not going to warm up much. on wednesday, 43 degrees, a great travel day with sunshine. 50 on thanksgiving itself with a mix of sun and clouds, and increasing clouds on black friday. the next chance for some rain showers will come in over next weekend. in the meantime, lots of sun and temperatures that will be chilly . seasonable for this time in november.
