in fact, i only felt welcomed to the small but celebratory pow wow held in a remote corner of the reservation, tiny batesland you're from this area. this pow wow is one of the more traditional ones. less commercial is what i was told right? - it is, i would say batesland pow wow is actually my favorite pow wow. it's very traditional. it's very firewalled away from the money scene. it's a real good family event. it's just a good place to come hang out with friends and relatives and have a good time. - and erick being a new person here, living here, what have you learned and what advice can you give to people who maybe never visited a reservation or been to a pow wow before? - one thing is i would definitely say is come to the reservation. the fact of the matter is that the jewelry is made here and the ceremonies are done here. so the first thing you can do is actually to come here. give respect to people

3:08 am

yet these people who were the very first americans, first people here, have been marginalized. i had heard all the stories about the suicide for kids, the poverty. but what i saw, what i experienced in my short time here was sort of uplifting. a lot of really positive people, very open to visitors coming in and very hospitable and just incredibly resilient. and i think there's hope there. i think there's-- that's it's not-- you know, all is not lost, so long as there's hope and there's people trying then there's possibility. some people choose to only see good things in life and others only see misery. but i prefer to see it like it is, the good and the bad, the heartbreaking and the uplifting. i found it all at pine ridge, as i knew i would.
