[captioning performed by the national captioning institute, which is responsible for its caption content and accuracy. visit ncicap.org] stephanie: happening right now police are stepping up security , at the nashua holiday stroll. in the wake of recent terror attacks, officers are taking extra precautions to make sure everyone at the event is safe. good evening and bank for joining us. i' m stephanie woods. thousands are enjoying the ice sculptures and events tonight. wmur' s mike cronin joins us live in nashua with how people are enjoying the night. mike: several attractions downtown. one of the crowd favorites is the ice sculptures right behind city hall behind me. considering with the weather was like a earlier, people are mostly happy with mother nature' s cooperation tonight. holiday cheer filled the streets of nashua for the annual winter holiday stroll. the rain was an unwelcome sight earlier but it held off by the time the events started. tens of thousands of people packed downtown.

mike: santa claus led the march down main street with some kids already thinking of their christmas list. you know what you' re going to ask for christmas from santa? >> yeah. i want chubby puppies. mike: this is the stroll' s 22nd year in a nashua. >> tradition is the number one reason people come out. a whole host of musical outs on several stages. 75 fax downtown. -- 75 acts downtown. shopping is a mainstay here every day. mike: it is estimated 70,000 people will show up on saturday. great american downtown added 20 area. city hall. event. mike: officials increased everyone can enjoy the night without any problem. >> safety is a top priority.

>> we saw a couple and you just feel better. >> there has been a lot of police around and everyone is well beehive and seems to be having a good time. probably a good safety measure. mike: with the tree lighting, the holiday season is in full swing in nashua. >> merry christmas! mike: so these festivities will continue until 10:00 tonight and so far, police say there have been no incidents. mike cronin, wmur news 9. stephanie: thank you, mike. a brave boy battling brain cancer was the grand marshal in the rollinsford and south berwick christmas parade today. 10-year-old levi whitcomb from rollinsford was diagnosed in april. he underwent an 18-hour surgery , which left him with some challenges. he is currently receiving chemotherapy and speech therapy. levi says despite his treatments, the parade is giving him a reason to smile. >> i like to say thank you so

joy and seeing all my friends is really bringing me back to who i am. >> the surrounding communities, the outpouring of support has brought me to tears at some points because the generosity is just astounding. stephanie: levi also received a plaque for serving as this year' s grand marshal. tomorrow, you can check out dover' s holiday parade. this year' s theme is christmas through the eyes of a child. it starts at 2:45 on central avenue. and it looks like the weather will improve by then. chief meteorologist mike hadad tells us how much sun we are going to see. mike: we will get the bright skies fact and in the temperatures, big change from what we saw yesterday, thanks to the clouds, the rain, and the wind direction. the clouds are beginning to press him from the north and west, moving out to see as well. that means high pressure is

charged with her murder, and her mother is charged with eating accessory -- being an accessory. spilling gas into the souhegan river. it happened friday night just before 6:00. according to the milford fire department, a substantial amount of gas spilled into a storm drain and entered the river. crews from milford, amherst, brookline, and wilton contained the spill. fortunately, no one was hurt, and firefighters cleared the scene by 1:30 this morning. the town of amherst is remembering veterans by laying holiday wreaths at their graves. s called wreaths across more than a dozen volunteers s five cemeteries this morning to distribute them starting at the meadow view cemetery on foundry street. s kristen carosa spoke to volunteers about this annual effort. kristen: this is a tradition in amherst. laying the recent takes just a minute but it means so much to veterans and your families. volunteers set out in the rain

to honor veterans who have died. those who gave everything they had. >> they sacrificed the ultimate come of giving their life to us, to give us our freedom. kristen: michael, veteran himself, was one of the volunteers who late holiday wreaths at great sites belonging to veterans across the state. >> gives me pleasure to do this. i know i contributed and did something for these people. kristen: the day is organized each year by marie, her father was also a veteran. she does this to honor him and in amherst. >> and chemistry of 500 some interest from totaling 470 veterans. it is all done by volunteers. kristen: she says the reasons-=- -- wreath are donated each year. it is a simple gesture but one that touches her heart. >> they will leave and i come back a little later.

some opted for a low-key saturday at smaller stores. small business saturday was created to encourage shoppers to support local businesses. downtown milford was busy with people looking for the best holiday gifts. the owners of pastiche boutique say the day drives holiday sales but also gets the word out on local shops and boutiques. >> there is a lot out there and a lot to offer, and we hope that people come and find us on this day, too. >> the most fun of the day is getting to see the people, because they come in and they are smiling, and they want to indulge and they want to be able to help us out and it is just encouraging. stephanie: the boutique rewarded customers for shopping local with many items on sale. still to come, a claremont pitbull is learning to walk, again after she was found with her mouth taped shut on the train tracks. next, an update on how hope is recovering. mike: a quiet stretch will take over beginning tomorrow, but for how long? if you're doing everything right but find it harder and harder to get by, you're not alone. while our people work longer hours for lower wages,

stephanie: welcome back to news 9. hope, the pit bull found starving in claremont over 4 weeks ago, is putting one paw in front of the other on the road to recovery. cathy sullivan, the owner of lost my way animal shelter, said going on walks. and having fun meeting new people. sullivan says when someone found hope on the train tracks she was emaciated, weighed only 27 duct-taped shut. out who hope' s former owner is. hope still has a way to go before she can be adopted. this afternoon, more than 100 brave turkeys took the plunge into corcoran pond for the waterville valley cold turkey plunge. the plunge benefits the waterville valley adaptive sports program. the non-profit organization provides access to winter sports for disabled children and adults. they raised more than $37,000. well, good job to them. it was kind of a good day for that because the cold turkey plunge could be a lot colder than today. mike: compared to yesterday it was a lot colder but it could be
