m stephanie woods. adam: and i' m adam sexton. wmur' s kristen carosa joins us now live from the scene of the crash on lake avenue with the latest on the investigation. kristen: this area behind me was closed for several hours as police continued their investigation. the scene has been cleared and flowers have been left behind. people in this neighborhood are left wondering how this crash happened. this was the scene early sunday killing one person. >> i was coming down the alley way and my buddy said you gotta help me. kristen: larry powell and his friend tried to help the people weren' t far behind. >> they had the jaws of life, and they had to pry the doors open. i knew right then they were going to be hurting. kristen: the crash happened around 4:00 a.m. involving a honda pilot and a volkswagon s.u.v. the driver of the volkswagon, 31-year-old alexander burke, is

now in custody facing a felony charge. police say he was driving while intoxicated. >> upon arrival, we saw two vehicles, extensive damage to one of the vehicles. four victims in the first vehicle. the second vehicle had two victims. the victims in the first vehicle all severe and critical, all taken to the elliot hospital. the jaws of life was the extrication tool used to get two of the victims out. kristen: one of the passengers in the honda pilot died of their injuries. their name is not being released. the others were taken to the hospital and are expected to be ok. >> in my 33 years on the fire department, this is one of the more severe accidents i have encountered. kristen: and neighbors say questions remain about how it happened. >> how they ended up going backwards, i have no idea. that is what i want to know. that is what i do not understand. it looks like they were coming up lake avenue. kristen: police are reviewing surveillance video of the crash that was captured by a business nearby. this crash remains under investigation.

reporting live in manchester, kristen carosa, wmur news 9. stephanie: thank you. clear skies across the granite state today. you' re taking a live look at manchester from our goffstown camera. it is 35 degrees. meteorologist josh judge tells us how cold it will get tonight. josh: check out the temperatures as we have sunk into the upper 20' s in northern new hampshire already. 30' s elsewhere. very low 30' s. keen and jaffrey already around 30 degrees. sinking quickly because the winds are calming down. we did see snow flowers -- snow showers and flurries in the mountains. the clouds were nowhere to be seen in southern new hampshire. the rain heading in our direction. you can see that in the middle part of the country. we will talk about how that moved in later this week and show you the timing and

temperatures to expect. adam: turning to commitment 2016, right now all three democratic candidates are in manchester. you' re taking a live look at the radisson in manchester where the democratic party is hosting its annual jefferson jackson dinner you are seeing senator bernie sanders speaking now. clinton, bernie sanders, and martin o' malley rallied outside the hotel earlier today. tonight at 11:00, we' ll have a full recap of the speeches and events this evening. and earlier today, hillary clinton kicked off her campaign for job creation in boston. the democratic presidential candidate promised to rebuild achieve a middle class lifestyle. she called for $275 billion in federal spending on infrastructure. expensive portion of clinton' s economic agenda. secretary clinton says the spending would be paid for by closing corporate tax loopholes. they campaign did not say which

republican presidential candidate chris christie is grabbing headlines around the country after garnering the coveted endorsement of "the new hampshire union leader" editorial page. the new jersey governor is still at the bottom of the pack in the polls but has been campaigning heavily in the granite state. political analysts say "the u.l." has handed him the ball, now it is his turn to run with it. >> calling chris christie right for these dangerous times, "the new hampshire union leader" endorsed the new jersey governor for president sunday, a development welcomed by local supporters like former state senator bob letourneau. >> it' s the state' s largest newspaper, it' s the state' s largest conservative newspaper. i think it will give him a good boost at a time when it' s necessary. >> the editorial cites christie' s extensive resume and results as u.s. attorney and governor. christie has also been building momentum on the ground here in new hampshire, drawing an overflow crowd to a bedford house party last weekend. but the polls still have him trailing middle-of-the-pack candidates like jeb bush and john kasich. >> i think you' re going to start

to see that change. look, polls are a great thing. but you want to peak on election day. you don' t want to peak before then. >> while praising christie, the editorial also takes some shots at others in the republican field saying, we don' t need another fast-talking, well-meaning freshman u.s. senator trying to run the government. freshman senators in this race include marco rubio, ted cruz, and rand paul. unh professor of political science dante scala says all digs aside, "the union leader" is giving chris christie a chance at a breakout moment. >> this endorsement, i think, will at least encourage people to give him a second look. and it comes at a good time for him with about two and a half months left. and chris christie actually has a campaign on tv and in person that could capitalize on the endorsement. adam: while this could be a big boost for governor christie, "the union leader" endorsement by no means guarantees victory in the primary. the paper has picked a winner just twice in the last six

republican primary elections. stephanie: new hampshire fish and game officers rescued lost hikers on two mountains this weekend. two people were reported missing on mount madison last night. fish and game officers say the hikers did not have lights, which made it difficult to find them. but thanks to some two-way radios and information from other hikers, the pair was located and hiked to safety. officers also rescued a 37-year-old hiker who fell on huntington ravine on mount washington. the man injured his leg, and officers used an a.t.v. to bring him down the mountain. tomorrow, parents in manchester will bring students to school at a different time. the school district is changing hours based on its new contract with the manchester education association. elementary school will begin at 8:45 and end at 2:50. middle school starts at 7:35 and ends at 2:20. and high school starts at 7:45 and ends at 2:53. the new academic calendar also builds in three snow days so days won' t need to be made up at the end of the year.

stephanie: welcome back to news 9. the manchester boston regional airport was busy today as the holiday weekend comes to a close. adam: the u.s. state department issued a worldwide travel alert two days before the thanksgiving after recent terror attacks and increased threats. authorities say the airport operated at a heightened level of security, but people we spoke to say they didn' t notice any differences and traveling to and from their destinations was easy. >> it hasn' t been bad. the trip home was pretty calm. the trip back was pretty calm. airports haven' t been too busy. >> it' s been good. no problems.

nothing really going on. same old stuff. adam: during the holidays, travelers are asked to arrive 90 to 120 minutes before flights to get through security in case of large crowds. stephanie: the theme was the more the merrier at the salem holiday parade this morning. after derry had to cancel their parade due to rain yesterday, organizers in salem invited those participants in derry' s parade to join them in salem. high school bands, veterans, snow men, and polar bears all lined up at 12:30 this afternoon and marched from main street to salem high school. adam: a great time in salem. santa claus stopped in boston today. saint nick arrived at boston common in a med-flight helicopter this afternoon. he was checking on the city as it' s getting ready for christmas. the 50-foot christmas tree arrived, and on thursday it' ll be lit up for the rest of the season.

josh: we are back with a chilly night. clear skies, uneventful, but certainly on the cold side. s today. the winds call ming but still evident. 30' s across southern new hampshire. northern new hampshire, some areas into the 20' s and continuing to fall. the winds have been calming down . they were gusting up to 25 mouse per hour through the afternoon. enough to feel colder but not cause damage. they are calming down and

staying like this or less through the nighttime hours. the winds are what caused the clouds in the mountains and even some snow during the afternoon. a few flurries even right now as well. it is coming to an end through the night. mostly because of the winds calming down. the winds are what is causing the clouds. the wind forces the air to rise and snow showers come out of that. the wind comes down the mountains and clears out, it operates the clouds. high pressure has been building down from canada today. that is why we saw the sunshine return. the rain was along the front down now almost into the atlantic coast. it is headed even further south for a brief bit. this high pressure is short-lived before this area of low pressure builds in along with the warm front.

most of the rain holding off until nighttime and perhaps into wednesday. some models push away wednesday and dry it out. some put the rain right over us. there' s a chance the rain ends by the morning. there' s also a chance it continues. look at the lows tonight. it is chilly tonight. we only rebound into the low and mid 30' s across most of the state tomorrow amongst plenty of sunshine. the rain moves in tuesday night into wednesday. we clear out at the end of the week. next weekend looks pretty dry. only one rain chance this week. stephanie: compared to last year when we were getting the snow around thanksgiving, we are doing pretty well. adam: we made it through the holiday season nicely. stephanie: how are they looking in denver tonight? jason: a little suspect at this point. the patriots and broncos meet on sunday night football, a huge challenge for the injury

danny amendola will not play due to an injured knee. so add him to a list that includes dion lewis, julian edelman, and aaron dobson, leaving brandon lafell as the only veteran wide reciever left for tom brady. of course, he still has his tight end. the broncos have one of the best defenses in the league. denver is actually the only team in the nfl that brady has a losing record against, 6-7 lifetime. but denver will be without their quarterback. peyton manning is also injured, so this will not be a brady-manning matchup. >> there is nobody that has more respect for peyton than me outside of his parents and brother. if anybody can appreciate what he has accomplished, it is me. he has been remarkable in every part of his career. he has been a tremendous player. it is unfortunate.

for the first time in 45 straight games, drew brees did not throw a touchdown pass. the season came to an end for the unh football team yesterday, losing to colgate in the first round of the fcs playoffs 27-20. but at least they had the chance to play. new hampshire made the postseason for a 12th consecutive season. after a pretty rough start to the year, the team rallied to win four in a row down the stretch, finishing the regular season at 7-4, and not only making the playoffs, but hosting the playoff game. >> i know we are a really good football team. i think we showed it. the seniors have invested a lot in the program. probably got us to where we are today. >> we did not play the way we felt we should have been playing early on. but we fought all the way through. the new hampshire wildcats, you can never count us out. the same goes for this season. they count us out of the playoffs early on, and we fought back. just unfortunate we could not get a win at home.
