the challenge firefighters faced in getting water to the scene. shelley: experts say the state is on track to set a grim record. the number of drug overdose deaths so far this year and the drug involved in the majority of them. tom: republican presidential candidate donald trump campaigned in waterville valley tonight. his plan for giving veterans reliable access to health care. shelley: toys and gift cards ready to be given to families in need stolen. how organizers from operation santa claus plan to make sure the holidays aren' t spoiled. >> no one covers new hampshire like we do. now, wmur news 9 tonight. shelley: were going to talk about the weather. a difficult afternoon on the roads in many parts of the state as drivers dealt with freezing rain. good evening, i' m shelley walcott. tom: i' m tom griffith. conditions will likely improve overnight. that' s the good news. chief meteorologist mike haddad is here to explain what to expect tonight and tomorrow

mike: mostly rain out there tonight but there are a few pockets near 32 degrees in that means a slight chance of more icing in the next few hours. also notice splashes of pink on the radar in and around mount washington valley, west through the plymouth area and down to the lake son of the zone. temperatures right near 32 degrees. that means any untreated surface will likely glaze up. notice plymouth at 32, concord at 33. any area to the north and west of the state capital into parts of the lakes region experiencing some light blazing. that means the freezing rain concern will continue for a couple more hours. the freezing rain advisory extended until 4 a.m. -- 4:00 a.m. for most of central and southern new hampshire. tomorrow morning it' s mainly rain statewide but what about

we will look at all of that straight ahead. tom: we' re learning more about the 5 alarm fire that gutted a home in bedford today. because of the size of this house the state fire marshal' s office has been asked to assist in the search for a cause. for safety reasons, investigators won' t attempt to go into the house until the morning. jean mackin spoke to firefighters who will be monitoring the scene overnight. jean: firefighters from a dozen towns spent hours battling the fire here in bedford. while they could not save the house, the family that lived here is safe. flames filled the 13,000 square foot home on burleigh terrace in bedford. around 12:30 tuesday afternoon, someone inside the house called to report smoke. the first arriving firefighters spotted flames shooting from the roof. they attempted to fight the fire inside, but were forced out and into a defensive operation. the bedford fire department says 5 adults and 2 children all members of the same family are safe. >> the property owner was home,

the building. even the family' s pet hamster was rescued. but there was no saving the home. firefighters poured up to the house. they say the closest hydrant is nearly a mile away, so they used a tanker shuttle to get water to the fire. >> they had multiple porta-tanks set up that held 2,000 or 2,500 gallons of water. they had 2 of those set up and they were shuttling donw the road a mile, mile and a half to get water and come back. jean: with the fire under control the focus turns to the cause. because of the size of the house, the state fire marshal' s office has been asked to assist in the investigation once the sun comes up and they examine the structural integrity of the house. >> we can' t make it to the area of orgin due to the damage done to the house. its deemed unsafe. >> we' ve had a couple interior building collapses, so before we put personnel in there to start investigating, we have to make

to go in. jean: the fire department says the family not only lost their house but everything in it and that they are understandably distraught. the red cross did offer to help the family with any immediate needs. in bedford, jean mackin, wmur news9. shelley: no one was hurt in a fire at a 150-year-old home in exeter this evening. firefighters arrived at eight oak street and found the back of the house was fully involved. one firefighter did suffer minor injuries from cut glass. the assistant chief told us his crews moved quickly to keep the rest of the 3 story home from sustaining too much damage. >> heavy fire in the rear pretty much destroyed the rear section. we had crews do an aggressive interior attack and they were able to get to the scene of the fire and not down the fire. shelley: crews will be back on

sparked the fire. tom: yet another fire this morning in barnstead. the person who made the emergency call live at the home on windsor way and said she was having trouble removing a disabled family member. barnstead police were first one the scene and were able to get the person to safety. there were no injuries, but the structure was damaged. >> the have -- the family will be displaced while repairs are made. tom authorities say the fire : appears to have started in an electrical box. hampton falls police say calls for an overdose turned into a standoff. no one answered the door when police officers and firefighters got to the house on exeter road just after noon. when they got inside, police say a man who appeared to be under the influence made a threat involving a weapon. the officers left the house, and a few hours later they convinced the man to come out. mark tracy is due in court

criminal threatening. shelley: some disturbing end of the year statistics highlight just how bad the drug crisis has become in our state and there is still a month in the year left. the news is graham. the regional director for american medical response says new hampshire is projected to set a record for drug deaths this year. >> we' ve been watching this very carefully for about a year now, keeping statistics and sharing them with everyone that we can, public health, police, fire across the state. shelley: here are some of the you read -- newly released numbers. the state medical examiner says there have been 295 deaths connected to opioids in 2015. but the projected number of drug related deaths for this year is expected to hit 357, once some suspected overdose cases are confirmed. that' s 31 more fatal drug overdoses, than the 326 cases confirmed at the end of 2014.

a very, very large increase in overdoses or opiate overdoses but deaths as well. shelley: 183 fatal overdoses in 2015, involved fentanyl including 135 deaths that were attributed to fentanyl alone, >> there' s no quality control at the heroin factory. they put anything in it that they can and, as has been said make. it' s synthetic, doesn' t need to be cultivated, and they add that shelley: two of the state' s largest cities have been hit hard. >> for november, between nashua and manchester, we' ve had 101 fatalities in the state that we can attribute to what we believe to be opioid overdoses. shelley: and he says there is one more disturbing telltale trend. >> and the disturbing part is the amount of narcan that we have to give these patients is increasing. which means the heroin, or if it' s fetanyl, is becoming more pure. shelley: there are still 80

are pending toxicology results. tom: republican front runner donald trump held a rally in the valley tonight. he hit on one of the familiar issues in the campaign, and also the advice he would give young people to be successful. suzanne rountree was there and begins are 2015 -- commitment 2016 coverage. suzanne: several hundred people tonight braved the black ice on new hampshire roads to catch a glimpse and hear how donald trump would change the country if he was electred president of the united states. trump says he was the first candidate to broach the subject of illegal immigration. donald trump: you are losing tremendous numbers of jobs. people in this country cant get jobs. illegals are coming intothis country taking jobs that people here would like to have. a lot of bad things are happening. suzanne: trump said he has plans to help people come into the country legally. he touched upon building the wall between mexico in the

thousand dollars worth of toys and gift cards taken during a holiday burglary. the program run by the state employees association provides gifts for disadvantaged children at christmas. police say some time during the thanksgiving break, somebody entered the operation santa claus warehouse and took gift cards and toys. they are still trying to figure out exactly what other presents are missing. organizers say many people have already stepped up to help replace what is gone. >> that' s the part of the season that operation santa claus represents and thefts like this can' t overshadow that. and they' re not going to dampen our enthusiasm going forward. tom police say they are working : on several promising leads and tighter security measures are now in place at the warehouse facility. shelley: as parts of the nation get hit with a one-two punch of heavy rain and snow, we' re hearing new details about a dramatic rescue. a mother and her 3 young children were trapped in their

rain falling in many parts of northern and central new hampshire leading to accidental area roadways. nothing compared to that icing event out in the midwest that we' ve seen over the past 24-36 hours. you can see the rain continuing to move on through and that continues through tonight and tomorrow. any ice will quickly change over to rain. it' s rain falling in contact with cold services -- surfaces resulting in freezing rain. a wet wednesday and wednesday night will follow. once we get beyond the storm and it pulls away, left over royster will fall in the form of snow for many parts of northern new hampshire. after that it looks great for friday into the first weekend of december. freezing rain advisory remains up for the next two hours in northern and central new hampshire. mostly green, that means it' s

the pink shaded areas around the mount washington valley and through down through plymouth and just northwest of concord, that' s for some sponsor near 32 and it' s freezing on contact. that means untreated surfaces could be a little bit on the icy side. now washington valley right at 32 degrees, so watch out for pockets of icing there. all the way down into a good part of the monadnock region, there could be a use for eagles here and in steadier rain will feel back in from the south and west overnight and on and off tomorrow. stuck in the low to mid 30' s all day long. mount washington more the warmer spots all day, indicating that warmer areas trying to build in across the northeast. eventually that means just plain rain statewide tomorrow. occasional rain for the morning

the heaviest could fall tomorrow evening before that moves out to the east. that' s not the end of the story. the cold air begins to slowly build in during early thursday morning resulting in a change over to snow across the white mountains and the great north woods. not out of the question that several inches could fall in those areas. right now the best bet is through the great north woods see the heart of the white mountains. the higher terrain could see four plus and that could be over half foot in some areas. southern new hampshire, rain may be mixed in with a few wet flakes in terms of a shower thursday but most of the date dry. snow in the mountain the great north woods, friday writing cool , saturday looking good, sunday even warmer even a few spots slightly higher and then cooler but quite early next week. a little bit of glazing
