deb: good morning. if you are commuting in the southern part of the state, the good news is the rows are wet and incident free. but if you are commuting to north of the notch, crews are out treating the roads. we have some icy spots especially on the off and on ramps and on the area bridges. once you make your way back to the central part of the state, 293 moving well all the way down to the split with 93. in the everett turnpike and 111 are very good at this hour. if you are commuting into massachusetts, traffic is heavy on 93 south in methuen and from woburn down to boston. this report is being brought to you by peters honda an d d nissan of nashua. erin: thank you so much. we are getting a clearer picture of just how bad the drug crisis has become in the state of new hampshire. new numbers released by the state show that this could be

with nearly 300 deaths already. ray brewer is live in concord this morning to break down the numbers for us. ray: good morning. disturbing numbers, they are. the regional director from american medical response is it -- says new hampshire is on pace to set a record. the biggest problem is fentanyl. released from the state medical examiner' s office. there have been 295 confirmed deaths so far this year connected to opioids. that number expected to reach nearly 360 by the end of the year. 183 of those involved fentanyl. nearly 60 involved heroin. those are just the deaths. there have been many other people who have overdosed but survived. emergency responders say it is a dangerous situation. >> there is no quality control of the heroin factory. they put anything in it they can.

they add that along with heroin. ray: now, first responders also say they are having to use more narcan to revive overdose patients and that is a sign that the drugs are becoming more pure. and there are still another 80 suspected drug overdoses that are awaiting toxicology reports. reporting live outside the state lab in concord, ray brewer, wmur news 9. erin: investigators are going to be and exeter today trying to pinpoint what caused the fire in a 150-year-old home. when firefighters arrived on oak street, they found the back of the house and the garage engulfed in flames. crews were able to keep the fire from spreading. one firefighter was treated for minor cuts. donations are starting to pour in to help operation santa clause stole thousands of dollars worth of gifts. the program which is run by the state employees association

but she is battling kidney disease and needs a transplant. since we aired the story, she says more than 75 people have reached out offering to help. and the calls are still coming in. the calendar has flipped to december, and that means the pelham police department has ended no shave november. officer shave their beards yesterday at caesars palace. the department raised $1250 for the pelham community coalition by growing beards. the man who shaped their beards also made a donation. fewer adults are being diagnosed with diabetes in the u.s. according to the cdc, 1.4 million people were diagnosed last year. that is down from 1.7 million in 2009. overall, there are 22 million americans with diabetes. health officials say they are not sure why the numbers are falling, but they would like to think it is a result of people exercising more and cutting back on sugary drinks.

the wage gap because customers start taking more. they also say that it is a constant challenge throughout the city to hire and keep good kitchen staff. and they definitely need people in the kitchen doing their jobs. kevin: like a lot of things, it is a team effort. we start off early this morning with a system continuingto move in. that means more scattered showers. we saw off with clouds and light rain and patching fog -- patchy fog. most air temperatures above freezing. you get in between towns, you get into those secondary roads, some of the sheltered valleys, and there could be a few spots at 32 degrees. do not assume the water you see is just liquid. there could be a couple of elevated surfaces, bridges and overpasses that could be slick. you notice a few more rain showers making their way in. we will see these move through during the morning commute.

that will start driving in cooler air for the end of the week. temperatures today -- a couple of holdouts, and some of those central valleys like plymouth, franklin that hold in the upper 30' s. but for a lot of other areas, we are looking at the lower half of the 40' s with clouds and occasional rain. that first batch of showers moves through. the second batch will be slated for this afternoon and this evening. a lot of areas not more than a half inch of rain fall out of the system. notice the change over later tonight for the north country could be several hours of light snow around white mountains which could total up to a quick 1-3 inches of accumulation. skies clear for the day friday. a fairly gusty winds tomorrow that settles down to a breeze by friday. a good deal of sunshine by the time we get towards the weekend. who is going to see that 1-3 inches of snow? it is a long and north of the white mountains. and maybe a mixed shower for southern areas of the system

>> no one covers new hampshire like we do. now wmur news 9 daybreak. erin: good wednesday morning. and welcome to december 2. we are seeing rain out there in many areas this morning. along the seacoast in portsmouth. we will take a look at the forecast after our top stories. revealing disturbing data about new hampshire' s drug crisis. it says that there have been 295 deaths related to opioids so far this year. the state fire marshal will be on the scene of a house fire in bedford to try to determine what caused the blaze that destroyed a 13,000 square foot home. and also a dartmouth college student is pleading for help after she says that her $20,000

we are seeing some slippery spots up north especially. kevin: you get to the secondary roads, the untreated surfaces and maybe some of the elevated surfaces or your back porch and there could be slick spots with temperatures just above the freezing mark. a couple more showers. more reinforcement to our south and west moving northeastward and headed in our direction for the afternoon and evening. temperatures a sufficiently above freezing in the afternoon with temperatures working their way into the lower range of the 40' s. there will not be a wind out there this morning. not quite as chilly as yesterday but showers through this evening changing over to wet snow in the north country overnight. erin: we do want to check the rose this morning. see if there any problems. here is a live look at 93. volume picking up at the winton stretch. kevin: for a look at the morning drive in the granite state, we are joined by deb davison. deb: good morning. yes, we are seeing some increasing volume in the southern part of the state, as many commuters are hitting the roads.

the news is not good, is it? ray: it is not. there is no getting around it, the news from these reports is grim. the racial director of american medical response -- the medical director says we are on pace for a record. there have been 295 deaths connected to opioids in 2015 but the projected number of drug-related deaths for this year is expected to hit 357. cases are confirmed. that is 31 more fatal drug overdoses than the 326 cases confirmed in 2014. >> a significant increase, a very, very large increase in not only the number of heroin overdoses but deaths as well. ray: 183 fatal overdoses this year involved fentanyl. 135 deaths were a sherbet into

of this 13,000 square foot home on berlay terrace. no one was hurt. firefighters say the closest hydrant was a mile away, so a dozen fire apartments were called in to help shuttle water. investigators say they cannot enter the house until it is deemed structurally safe. >> we have had a couple of interior building collapses, so before we put any personnel in there to start the investigation, we have to make sure the building is safe. erin: the fire was so massive they poured up to 180,000 gallons of water on it. search for the cause because of the size of the house. authorities in barnstead set a fire broke out at a home on windsor way yesterday. electrical box. a disabled man was inside the home when the fire started, but police officers were able to get him to safety. the red cross says on average, a

vermont is displaced by disaster and every 20 hours. a man accused of setting off a stand off and hampton falls is due in court. police say they were called to a house on exit a road yesterday for report of an overdose. when they got inside, they say mark tracy who appeared to be under the influence made a threat involving a weapon. the officers left the house and a few hours later they did convince tracy to come out. he is scheduled to be arraigned today. moultonborough falls these are trying to identify for people they say broke into castle in the clouds. the suspects got inside this historic mansion on halloween and stole several bottles of alcohol. police think that they may have left in a silver ford f-150. asked to call police. the man convicted of getting -- giving the boston marathon

an mit police officer is scheduled to be sentenced. stephen silva testified in court that he mounted dzhokhar tsarnaev the pistol that was used to murder sean collier. silva is scheduled to be sentenced on charges including gun possession. a hearing was held yesterday on tsarnaev' s appeal for a new trial. the defense told the judge that 15 of the 30 counts against their client failed the crimes of violence test and should be tossed out. they also asked the court to give their client a new sentencing proceeding, one that table. experts say a death penalty case, the appeals process is automatic and will likely drag on for years. a dartmouth college student says her prized violin was stolen in california. the violin was made in london in the early 1800s and is valued at $20,000. erica says she loaned the instrument to a friend who

erin: well, christmas trees are being donated across the country and abroad as a way to say thank you to our troops. the trees for troops programs brings christmas trees to military members and their families. 450 trees were loaded onto fedex truck' s yesterday in bethlehem. they will be delivered to fort leonard in missouri. the trees were donated by farms around new hampshire and vermont. >> one of the greatest things that you can send when you send a tree is the scent. that scent in new hampshire and vermont makes them think of home. erin: now in its tenth year, the program is bringing 21,000 trees to service members. gets underway on friday. collecting new unwrapped toys throughout the weekend at the toys "r" us in manchester and newington. members of the wmur team will be live at both locations friday to thank you for your generosity.
